Mayhem is a band whose career has spanned 20 years now, although you’d never know it by looking at their discography. With Chimera being only their sixth real studio release, the band obviously takes their sweet time when putting out a new album. It’s even been four years since their last release, A Grand Declaration of War, dropped in 2000. With their last album taking turns into a slightly electronic and slower direction, it signified the arrival of a new Mayhem. However, Chimera will quickly bring you back to the days of the old with its fiery and blasphemous tones, except with a recording that doesn’t sound like it was made in a YMCA locker room.

Now I have to say that I liked A Grand Declaration of War, although I know many others didn’t and were quick to scream “untrue”. So maybe this release will appease the black metal underground once again. This is venomous, hate filled, and blazing fast black metal, just the way the north used to make it. No sissy-ass keyboards, no electronics, no opera singing, just unholy speed. Blasphemer’s guitar riffs are swift and get the job done. They will shred your skin and take time to creep along at times and make quick work of what is left. In addition, yes, it happened, you can actually hear the bass in a black metal album. In fact, the band even takes a break so you can clearly hear the heavy bass line tossed out by Necrobutcher in the song “Impios Devios Leper Lord”. Anyone slightly familiar with Mayhem knows that Hellhammer has the chops behind the kit. He can keep up with the best of them, and rightfully so as he has been setting the bar since the early days of extreme metal. On vocals, Maniac has a truly sinister voice, crisp and raspy almost at once, like the hiss of a snake, and his voice will send shivers down your spine.

I have to say that I am utterly surprised with this album. I had no idea what to really expect, but what is offered I am thoroughly pleased with. I have to say I even enjoy it more so thsn its predecessor in the fact that I think this band excels further when shredding in the old-style of black metal. If you are a fan of Marduk and the like, then this is right up your alley. Definitely, check this out as I see it making a very worthy addition to my collection of black metal.

This is one of my favorites, if not my favorite Mayhem release just because of the PRODUCTION. It's a great cd, but if you put Deathcrush in this kind of production, it wouldn't match up.

i agree with you key to nothing, this is NOWHERE near as good-sounding as Emperor ever was. This band has released a couple of good records (Deathcrush, De Mysteriis...) but now they are just another boring, derivative bm band.

To a real metal head: from me dave: well you little bitch, melodic is just pure shit with no meaning just a bunch of sad cunts with no real aspectations, i bet ur some pussy from the uk planning to make some horrible children of bodom or cradle of gay clone. and to you key to nothing, maybe you should live the true bm experience instead of predicting that a band that changed and abandoned their ways are by your words "better"

Is this what you people call real music?? I would like to hear the bastard cocksuckers that you call musicians play a melodic symphony instead of 'Gutpuking' or whatever you guys call it, and the lyrics? i just don't get how a grown man can actually even think of growling such garbage like "CUNTLESS NUNS WITH GUTS BOILING OUT OF THEIR BUTS!!" This is just mindless garbage, enjoy it if you want to but I'm abit too old for this shit!

Good comeback album for ye' ol Norwegian "Nigger Metallers", its been getting a helluva lot more play than I thought it would... by the way guys, I think the administration flagged the word "love" to an ad-linker, and why that word? so every time you type it, it shows up in blue, underlined, standing out... to remind you of how gay and unmetal you are... ... naaaahhhh... but what the fuck?

I love it too, fucking great album. Rape Humanity with Pride is the shit. Not to mention the entire package/layout of the CD etc. 1st class job alround. This album should teach all those want to be BM (UK scene excluded) bands who the masters are.

I like the old mayhem as well as the new one. was said before, it is a progressive band and that's what I like to ear, progession and good quality sounding. in my opinion, Chimera deserves 10 out of 10!! Black Fucking Metal

C'mon man! How can you expext Mayhem to sound like 10 years before, without Euro's guitar and Dead'd lyrics? This is like expecting Satyricon to write a second Shadowthrone. Mayhem was always a progressive band, so you are stupid if you think they will stagnate. But you are right of course in that De Mysteriis is their music was better in the good old days.

They have had quite a few singers, so you could feel differently about the vocals on this album. I agree with what others said. Review was stale and the bass comment. And Dee.. shut the fuck up. Noone cares if you got the first post.

I'm not too sure how much I like this review, though. It seemed a bit dull for an album so good. Also, a point worth mentioning is that Mayhem has always been one of the only BM bands where the bass-sound could be heard (Ever since the early days, with songs like Deathcrush or Life Eternal), so it is of no surprise to me that the great bass sound is heard so well on this album.
