The simply titled album Live is just that: a live album from one of the legends of power metal, Blind Guardian. It’s interesting to hear what they sound like live, since I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this spectacle in person. Hearing this album only makes me kick myself even more for not having the funds to be able to fly to Germany and see them. Since this is a double disc set, you get 22 excellent tracks to enjoy thoroughly. There are only about 4 songs from the new album, and luckily they’re some of the best. While two or so hours is hardly enough time to truly appreciate all of the glory that is Blind Guardian, they do manage to squeeze nearly every one of the songs I wanted to hear from a live album. From “Into the Storm” to “Nightfall” to “The Soulforged” to “Bright Eyes” to “Mirror Mirror”, all of the good ones are here. This album is not without fault though. There was one problem I had, and although it’s a minor one, it’s still annoying. The problem lies in the transition between tracks. They include just a little bit of the between-song banter of singer Hansi Kursch. In this reviewer’s opinion, you should include none or all, not just parts. And it’s not that they just included parts of the banter, they just kind of overlap what he’s saying with the beginning and the end, meaning Hansi will start talking, getting you interested in what he’s about to say, then it cuts him off with the intro of the next song. It’s hard to describe, but I assure you it makes for a very awkward and non-seamless transition. With just a little thought, it could’ve been done in a stealthy way, which is a shame. They should’ve just not included some of the banter if it isn’t gonna be in full, as it has no point when it gets cut off. The aforementioned problem is a problem with the post-production of the album, so when the band is in mid-song, they never sounded better. Hansi’s vocals are as top notch as we’ve come to expect, and the guitar work is as perfect as you can get in the live setting. Production is slightly cymbal heavy at times, but to my amazement you can actually hear the bass guitar! All in all, (as if you needed me to tell you) if you like live albums and you like Blind Guardian, you’ll like this. Wrathchild

Valhalla - This one plays SO well live, excellent sing-along chorus and killer solos Mirror Mirror - Hell of a way to close out the show, gotta love that folkish tune

I'd like to address Erk's comment on live albums. First, I can see where you're coming from. Live renditions of album cuts tend to fall slightly (if not quite a bit) below the bar that was raised by the original recordings. Case in point: Metallica's live DVD (and included live CD's), where a lot of songs are butchered, in my opinion. Therefore, I understand your comments. However, a lot of people like to grab a hold of a live album to see if a band is good enough to reproduce what was crafted in the studio; and when I hear a song that's played live just as well or better than what was heard on an album, I gain a lot of respect for that band's talents. Blind Guardian are such a band. Songs that appear on A Night at the Opera actually sound better live - and actually sound like classic Blind Guardian - even though the structure of the song is not altered in any way - they played them "all very straight forward". You might still not agree, but I just wanna give my perspective on live albums. Rock on \m/

What's the point of this album? The songs sound better in the studio, and unless you're there watching the band play it's not exciting to listen to live recordings. If the band messed around with the songs then it might be worth hearing, but they play them all very straight forward. Anybody who gets excited about live albums obviously isn't very smart.

While I love this double live recording, I feel that this is just a hint of what's to come with the double live DVD. Both set lists are full of songs picked by Blind Guardian fans, so you know it will rule.

This album is great. And giving a 0 for songwriting is the norm when its a live album :P

Good question, I give it a 0 of songwriting because the songs are already written! I don't want to judge them twice, and people who know blind guardian (the kind of person who'd buy this album) should already know that they write well anyway. Thanks for asking, I meant to clear it up in mid-review.

am i correct in assuming that you dont consider BLIND GUARDIAN to be excellent songwriters? 0.5 of a rating regarding songwriting is in my opinion very wrong.... i aint really a huge fan of em' but i gotta hand it to blind guardian, they write great songs...
