Psycroptic is one of the tightest units I’ve ever heard. Their music isn’t exactly pure death metal; it’s not brutal death; it’s a little thrashy at times, but I wouldn’t call it that either. As hard as it is to pinpoint their style, it’s very easy to claim two things. Firstly, this is superb production - extremely meaty, thick, clear, and powerful. The first time I heard this was in my car, and the opening chords of “The Colour of Sleep” just swallowed me and made the whole car shake with their huge, strong sound. When the double kick entered the song, I just shook my head in disbelief at the volume and clarity of it all. Secondly, the musicianship of this band is as close to perfect as anything I’ve ever heard. With the style of music this band has established, the practice time as musicians must exceed the decade mark. Their songs have a very jumpy stop and start trademark to them. They can build a main riff, then use only a fragment of it the next time around, then comment on the fragment, then distort, deform, and lead it completely astray, bringing it back as a mere remnant of what it began as. Some of the palm muted notes ascend so smoothly and gracefully and are in PERFECT synchronicity with the kick drum. It reminds me of Decapitated at times, yet a lot more intricate and detailed. What I can’t seem to understand is how I keep getting lost in the middle of the album. Not lost as in not following the material, but lost as in losing the feeling that I had at the start of the disc. The songs retain top-notch musicianship, but they seem to lose definition from one another between “The Colour of Sleep” and “Psychrology”, which I find to be one of the best songs on here. “Cruelty Incarnate” has a genius hook opening it up, and super tight start and stops, as usual. There are distinct palm-muted descending riffs that are picked so fast . . . the shit makes your head spin. There are no weighty death metal breakdowns, really; it’s basically a giant spider web of technical proficiency and density, twisting, turning, and constructing itself as it proceeds. “The Valley of the Winds Breath” has a multiple layered non-typical-for-metal chorus, and being the closed-minded brutal fan that I am, I am hesitant to admit that I actually like it quite a bit. It’s unexpected and thoroughly backed with smooth guitar harmonies that are actually quite soothing. The closing track, “The Scepter of Jaar-Gilon”, sports the same quality as the opening track by immediately anchoring itself with a firm riff, then swarming the rest of the song around it, frequently returning you to the core, reminding you just where you’re at. As dumbfounded as the musicianship on this record leaves me, I still struggle to identify certain works within the riffing. There are some songs that are hands-down winners from beginning to end, and there’s some that just leave me struggling to grasp that certain feeling while listening to it, and I can never seem to accomplish it. Psycroptic brings a brand of metal that is all their own, with choppy riffing that has the accuracy of a laser light show, and vocals that range from an earlier Phil Anselmo type concentration of power to a swamp bullfrog guttural grunt. It’s all done in the utmost professional manner with ideal production that helps unleash their intentions instead of restrict them. This is something I think every metal fan should hear regardless of personal taste, because the material will amaze you at one point or another. But how far Psycroptic pulls you in has yet to be determined.

I would look into getting this one before the new one. The same style is on both records it's just that the vocals on the new one are so terrible i refuse to listen to it. The guy seriously is just going ARG-GA-GAR-GA-GARG-GAG-GARG-GARG-GARG!! completely out of rythm and time, i can't make out a single word. In fact i think the newest one has Thee worst vocal perfomrance in death metal history, its that bad.....THIS ONE HOWEVER has some seriously awesome vocals and is one of my favoriute metal records ever.

This is one of the best technical metal albums that I've heard. Ridiculously tight musicianship, but for the most part the songs are very catchy and fun to listen to (though it does get bogged down here and there). I also want to say that Chalk's vocals on this are absolutely insane. One of the most versatile vocalists in metal, and a huge loss for the band.

This is a fantastic album. Even fans of the most brutal groups will have trouble listening to an entire Psycroptic album in one sitting. It's nonstop technical metal (I refuse to subgenre any deeper) and the vocals range from harsh, scratchy to low gutteral burps that are almost "rapped" into the mic. Its sad to see they have a new vocalist, and the new release doesn't touch this one, but regardless - Psycroptic is a band you should know. Highly recommended. B+

Checked out "Alpha Breed" yesterday. Very impressive for the most part, let's hope Psycroptic makes it to the states in 2006. I must say I didn't think anyone could top Matt Chalk but Jason Peppiat does a commendable job handling the vocal duties.

Check out the band's website to get a mp3 of the lead track off their new album. "Alpha Breed" kicks some ass. I need to listen to it again. If you dig this album, sounds as if Symbol of Failure shows some promise for you. Release date: Feb 13th 2006.

Yea! Definately KoRnY! I really want to get Tina Turners new greatest hits album. It's got this really brutal song on there. It's called something like "Love Me." Her voice is so earpeircing on that song that it makes me cum everywhere. Sometimes I put that on in one stereo, Limp Bizkit in another, and Psycroptic in another. I play them all at the same time. Then I hang upside down by my custom shoes like Pauly Shore does in the best movie ever, Son in Law. Then I jack off while cutting my chest with razor blades so the cum gets mixed with my blood.

Superb band, sublime musicianship, good production, so much to rave about. The only thing that bothers me to no end are the vocals. Why? Not because they are not well done but because the singer never stops singing. Holy fuck, can I please listen to the music and enjoy it's proficiency for a minute or so without constantly having to endure vocals. This album is very special but it would be so much more appealing if the singer let the music breath once a while.

i finally got my hands on this little beast today, and already i must've spun it through from start to finish 10 times! this album is a real contender for album of 2003! which is a BIG fucking call considering the awesome metal thats been released this year! awesome sound, structured brilliantly, executed with razor-sharp precision, just outstanding... i cant say enough great things about this band to do them the justice they deserve! as for earlier comments about this album wearing a little thin during play, i gotta disagree! i find this disc to be a killer from the word go, still ya gotta have an opinion! if i were to review it? this fucker would be 6.6.6 all the way!

I just prefer the natural sound and not the same exact sound everytime that triggering gives. I also thought the bass drum is too high in the mix, too rigid and lacks any real power. It''s a great cd and the band is very good. I like a human sound on the kit... human as far as the sounds of the kit is, not the playing style. Sometimes triggers do work but not in this case for me. Bigcol - the protools wasn't refering to his voice, just the drums. Im sure he sounds great live.

Meshman you'll find commit suicide sounds extremely bad. I really wish they'd clear they're sound up because the music kix ass. The prod is horrible though....Why are these 2 bands even being compared to each other...The Scepter of the Ancients has perfect production, nothing remotely close to a "burger king wind up toy"...what the hell are you talking about pcp?

I know not every album is run through Pro Tools, jesus christ. My point was that the use of DAWs is extremely common these days, no matter what genre, and you made it sound like it would be shocking if one was used and that it is something horrible. Kick in fast music is better off triggered---let's face it---it'll just be compressed to shit anyway, so who cares? What kind of monstrous sound are you talking about anyways? It all breaks down to frequency. And as far as the dynamics comment---wtf? It's true, even death metal has varied dynamics in a sense---but nothing you are really gonna miss after it's all run through some brickwall limiting. I guess I should check out Committ Suicide and see how brilliantly it sounds.

No meshman, not every album is ran through pro-tools. I dont know where you heard that. Or maybe you produced alot of records; fucked if i know. The different ratios and rates of compression vary on different albums of course. How good the production is does not have to equal what you would call crystal-clear quality sound. Look at Commit Suicide - Human Larvae - 2002. There is no pro-tools on there at all and in my opinion it sounds great. The lack of snare triggering on the record also gives it a very natural sound. Not something that sounds like a machine-gun effect from a nintendo game. For some groups sharp biting compression is ok. But i dont like my metal to sound like a wind-up toy i bought with my burger-king kids meal. I want it to sound like a thundering herd of savage beasts coming across the plains to take my life. If you haven't heard any better production in a death metal band perhaps you haven't been listening to metal for that long. Although it was got progressively better over the last era of metal due to more fans, the internet, mtv coverage. It doesnt mean that we should automatically accept that now that metal is gaining popularity that we should use the same production tools madonna or matchbox 20 would use.

meshman | posted on 11/2003 | Reply
Metalprimed---all mastered music is run through a compressor---in fact a compressor that is so strong, it is called a limiter. There are no real dynamics in music like this, anyway. But even the Red Hot Chili Peppers are run through brickwall limiting during the masterig process. Stupid moron.
Unknown Metalhead
meshman | posted on 11/2003 | Reply
pcp---no shit there is compression and it was ran through pro tools (or whatever equivalent DAW). Like every other album on the face of the planet, dipshit. This is the cream of the crop for DM production (I have not heard any better) can you at least list some bands that have done it better instead of pretending you know anything about sound by using words you know nothing about?

Great guitar, good songwriting. But i unfortunetly read the review first and expected great production. In my book this production would be ok if not for this form of music. As Metalprimed stated earlier i think this album is the work of a lot of compression and i hate to say it but possibly a little protools as well. Even if that didnt matter the drums are fairly weak and a little to rigid for my taste. The snare and bass drum's triggering sounds like shit. Im only trashing the production side of this album... it does have a proffessional sound and its not up to par i feel. Other than that its a great album. Maybe after touring on this they can find a more clear direction with their song righting. I think it would be great if music of this style became more progressive and used a thematic approach to the material (not like power metal style), thematic as in clasical formation of ideas and texture of the music. i would give this a 3-3-5. When their are more bands of this style probably give it a 3-3-4.

First off this album is amazing, the vocals are some of the finest I've ever heard, minus Lord Worm. I've been raving this CD at work since I bought it. Also I havn't gotten lost in the middle, solid album all the way through. Off topic here, Matt from Decrepit: Just bought your album ($18.99 WTF!?!?) and what's up with the insert? If you guys have since corrected the problem, can I get a new and improved (w/ all the lyrics)? Let me know @ the eMail provided. ...And Time Begins is another solid brutal death CD.

I'm not a big brutal fan, in fact, the only brutal band i can listen to without getting completely bored is Nile, there's something about Nile that's just so interesting and attractive, would you recommend this for me? Also since they're australian; Opeth is just barely starting to tour there, so obviously we're gonna be seeing a lot of involvement in metal from down under in the coming years

Nice to see this album from an AWESOME Australian band (From the State of Tasmania) make its way overseas and are impressing the shit out of you all. I would not have given the production a 6 though. I find it restricting to the dynamics of the band. Sounds like its was all shifted through a compressor at mix down. Maybe thats why you get lost in the middle ?
