The kings of death metal have returned, and our faith has remained strong in waiting. Although the last time we were blessed with a Morbid Angel album, 2003’s rather uneventful Heretic, many of us considered it to be only a mild stumble in their legendary catalogue, and we remained loyal nonetheless. But that was eight very long years ago, and the playing field has changed greatly since. They wish to be referred to as “extreme” metal, and I sure won’t tell them not to, but when taking in the level of quality to be found on their returning endeavor, their new direction is difficult to view in the positive even with the most forgiving ear. Our convictions let us believe that Illud Divinum Insanus could be a conquering return, especially with the return of David Vincent, the man who led the band to some of its greatest victories. But our faith has been met with betrayal, and our rulers have thrown us to the dogs. But maybe we all should have known better, shouldn’t we? All signs pointed to a departure of vast lengths, but this treason is beyond our imagining.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Trey never turned over the demos to Season Of Mist. Or perhaps the label, thrilled to have signed the highest-priority act in death metal today, wore rose-colored glasses and had no real idea what atrocity was about to transpire. Morbid Angel has all but abandoned everything that made them the top-tier performers they once were, striking down their death metal aesthetic in favor of an outdated, lazy techno/industrial vibe that sounds hilariously out of place. This attempt at diversity is really not funny at all, but the disbelief when hearing songs like “Radikult” and “Too Extreme!” is profound, and laughter is only a defense mechanism. Something has gone terribly wrong here, and it is utterly baffling that this was allowed to happen.

About three-fifths of this album should have been relegated to the cutting room floor and burned beyond recognition, and the industrialized, dumbed-down Front Line Assembly misstep of “Too Extreme!” has them stumbling badly right out of the gate. The lyrical palette seems to have been culled from the bottom of Rob Zombie’s rejection barrel once he realized he does not play half-baked hip hop, but the problem doesn’t lie with what they’ve done, but how they’ve done it. I’ve heard industrial music and techno vibes being taken to devastating extremes; maniacal, inhuman, mechanical brutality, and Illud incorporates none of those things. Instead, they’ve gone for the easily digested pop side of the coin, showing that Trey and David’s personal listening habits have bled into their own art with disastrous results. And yet, there are still glimmers of hope amongst all this mess, and they come with the inclusion of the brief (and sadly, few) death metal songs that actually do sound like the Morbid Angel we’ve always known.

“Existo Vulgore” takes a bit of the sting off “Too Extreme!” with a traditional approach of tremolo-riddled, blasting aggression that quickly leads into a crunchy verse structure, and a hatefully roared chorus that brings back memories of Domination. The Destructhor-penned “Blades Of Baal” is also a fast-paced slice of rampaging death metal that has the most contemporary feel to it of anything on the album, but that alone speaks volumes. Tim Yeung also shows remarkable restraint in comparison to his usual works, and makes it a point not to show off too often. But even so, there is much of this material that practically begs for exactly that: some wild, reckless pummeling that destroys with force, and it just doesn’t happen. “Nevermore” has been around for quite awhile, throwing off a fair amount of firepower for being a tune we’ve all become very familiar with already, and “Beauty Meets Beast” features roiling, bubbling rhythms that compliment Trey’s incomparably off-kilter style of riffing. But what are we left with after these few faithful Morbid Angel compositions come and go? A steaming pile of fucking balderdash, that’s what. We couldn’t even team up on this with opposing views, because there are no opposing views anywhere on our staff.

How the hell did they think integrating urban hip hop lingo into “Radikult” would be a good idea? The lyrics are a pathetic attempt to appeal to an audience they simply will never have, and as David Vincent cluelessly and arrogantly spouts his Alpha Male bullshit over a disgustingly weak and “happy” musical background, it becomes clear just how far the band has fallen away from its fans. “I Am Morbid” is also horrendously timid, artificial, and lacking in muscle, while “10 More Dead” reaches back into nu-metal grooves and a startlingly unimaginative structure throughout. It’s been eight years, and this is the crud they’ve come up with. It doesn’t even sound recent, but instead like material left over from past ideas of appealing to the revamped Headbanger’s Ball era, with a repugnant Genitorturers feel that has absolutely no place on a Morbid Angel album at all. “Destructos VS The Earth/Attack” serves as mere filler, and very long filler at that, even though there are spots that do stick out next to the dreck that surrounds them, but when “Profundis-Mea Culpa” finally rolls around, I have no idea just what they’re attempting to do, and the rattling, unfocused sound doesn’t indicate that they do either.

Illud Divinum Insanus is an insulting, confusing, egotistic attempt of a band to force its listeners into liking an aesthetic the polar opposite of what they’ve known, and it debases the views of longtime fans that refuse to accept this garbage without being labeled “unfaithful” by the band and their shameless PR team. This record has no redeeming value, no goal in mind other to slap their fanbase in the face with the fact that this pointless detritus is the best they could come up with after all this time. Even the production, which is even more hollow than Heretic, comes across with a castrated clarity that pushes Vincent’s tired, blown-out vocals and Yeung’s nondescript drumming to the forefront. You literally have to strain to hear the riffs in the faster songs, even at high volume.

I bet Pete Sandoval is sitting in recovery shaking his head at the wretched predicament his bandmates have brought upon themselves, casting handful after handful of dirt upon the coffin of a once-mighty leading light of blasphemous death metal. Call me an elitist/purist--I don’t care--but I shall never dirty my ear with this insufferable claptrap again, but I will strongly encourage you do so in order to witness the fall of one of the greatest acts metal has ever known, and join me in its funeral procession. The kings are dead, and apparently, sufficiently buried headfirst.

You’ve probably heard the rumblings in the distance. Death metal titans reunite with classic vocalist and return after a lengthy hiatus with an album that has the advance press all but tattooing a giant St. Anger on the band’s collective forehead. So, the looming question is, are we talking iconoclastic success or legendary failure? Well, it does take a special kind of boldness to be willing to alienate music critics, all imaginable past, present, and future fans, and any sentient beings with the basest capacity for hearing all in one fell swoop, so in that respect, Illud Divinum Whateverthefuck is a sparkling success. In every other respect imaginable, however, Morbid Angel’s eighth studio album is an abomination.

The martial synths of the “Omni Potens” intro sound like they could go either in a Laibach or Summoning direction, and while that’s a little goofy for my conception of what Morbid Angel should sound like, it is not on its own a bad start to an album. What it is, however, is an absolutely inadequate preparation for the complete aural bloodbath that is to follow. “Too Extreme!” (yes, the song title has a fucking exclamation point) springs to life in a credibility-incinerating blur of terribly blunted industrial drum beats and pogo-bouncing non-riffs. The guitars sound like differently-pitched vacuum cleaners being smashed repeatedly into a brick wall by a housecleaner driven to suicidal ideations by the tedium of these faux-electronic/industrial beats. OH, AND FOR FUCK’S SAKE, GIVE THIS MAN A SNARE DRUM, YOU ASSHOLES.

There is so much about this album that is essentially begging to be mocked – for example, entitling a song “Too Extreme!” only serves to call attention to the fact that there is nothing extreme, interesting, or in any way laudable about it. Additionally, calling the outro to your shit-fest of an album “Mea Culpa” (the Latinate equivalent of “My bad”) seems to go beyond a palatable level of wink-and-nudge critic-baiting, and instead approaches the level of reckless self-harm that typically requires civil commitment. I am not the first to point this out, either, but the intermittent telephone rings that Season Of Mist inserted throughout the promo download of this album actually improve upon what has been recorded.

When “Existo Vulgoré” kicks in, you might think, “Oh, thank goodness, here’s some actual death metal.” And yeah, it’s good to hear double bass blasting and an ACTUAL FUCKING SNARE DRUM, but once the relief of hearing these death metal signifiers cools a little bit, you realize that this is a pretty mediocre song, marred by David Vincent’s vocals being WAY too high in the mix. Plus, listen to that goddamn chorus: what the hell is going on there? I can’t make heads or tails of what goddamn rhythm they think they’re playing, and Vincent’s overbearing vocals make absolutely no rhythmic sense whatsoever against the riffing.

“Blades for Baal,” thankfully, is a proper ass-kicking tune, with some blistering riffs, an ominously grooving midsection, and a tasteful solo section that actually pays attention to the rhythm guitar tracks for its melodic and rhythmic construction. The entire song is extremely well constructed, thoughtful, and satisfyingly intense. Which is all fucking sunshine and moonbeams and roses and Dio throwing his heavenly horns from beyond the grave, right? Well, sure, except that it just puts in sharper relief the jaw-dropping musical ineptitude that characterizes the rest of the album. An album’s worth of “Blades for Baal”s would be fucking tight, but here’s the thing: the new Hate Eternal album is an album’s worth of “Blades for Baal”s; this is an album’s worth of creatively stagnant bowel evacuations masquerading as experimental death metal.

The biggest risk in trying to judge this album is that one’s mind is so unfavorably blown by the “experimental” tracks that one might overvalue the death metal tunes. “Nevermore” is another of these songs, but my goodness is it ever dull. “Beauty Meets Beast” isn’t terrible, either, but “not being terrible” is hardly the standard one should need to apply to a new album by one of death metal’s all-time greats. So, actual death metal songs: “Existo Vulgoré,” “Blades for Baal,” “Nevermore,” and “Beauty Meets Beast,” and only one of them is actually fantastic. By my count, that means about 19 minutes of this 57 minute earsore are adequate-to-excellent. The remaining 40-ish minutes are taking up by Morbid Fucking Angel sounding like nothing so much as the tired castoffs from a Marilyn Manson or Ministry rehearsal circa, oh, 1995 or so. Steel yourselves, friends; things are not well in our pantheon.

“I Am Morbid” begins with the fake sound of a crowd chanting, and it’s only downhill from there. These lyrics are so abysmal that… shit, they are so bad that words fail me. So try a sample on for size: “Morbid! Morbid! And sordid! Distorted, now bring ‘em to their knees! Morbid! Morbid! Won’t be thwarted from celebrating morbid victories.” This takes place against the backdrop of the blandest, sub-Satyricon attempt at fist-pumping “dark” arena rock imaginable – seriously, listen to the ascending chords of the pre-chorus, and then just try to resist the urge to scream along with me: FUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOU. “10 More Dead” swings into stale life with a Pantera rip-off groove, and while the bass sounds great rattling along like a thick branch from a dead tree being dragged by your car’s undercarriage, that dead tree is called Morbid Angel and all of creation weeps rivers of tears that will never dry.

And then, of course, you eventually get to motherfucking “Radikult.” I am using literally no hyperbole when I tell you that this wretched song is the unloved offspring of Marilyn Manson and Slipknot, and therefore to call this pansy-ass syncopated marching guitar garbage “tepid” is an insult to the word tepid, and probably an insult to words in general. Vincent can talk all he wants about all the “hardcore techno” he listens to, and how that has influenced these “experimental” songs, but let’s be clear about one thing: bringing mid-90s nu-metal/industrial rock into an ostensibly death metal record is not “experimental” – it is misguided, heart-breaking, and just straight-up terrible to hear. And yes, for the record, you DID just hear David Vincent sing “kill-a kill-a kill-a cop.”

Elsewhere in the song, you will hear such sanity-eviscerating gems as “We’re radical! Never made-to-order, unpredictable!” Generally speaking, if, in your band’s lyrics, you feel the need to explain to your fans the appeal of your band, something is utterly fucking rotten. Why would you ever say these words to me? Why would you think this is a good idea? These songs have more to do with the worst self-laudatory excesses of hip-hop or “best bros” hardcore than with anything that anyone should ever consider even tangentially related to death metal. At least the programming on album closer “Profundis – Mea Culpa” is a bit more energetic than elsewhere. This doesn’t make it good, of course, but it at least points in the direction of the band’s asinine pre-release press quotes. But that having been said, it still sounds like a rejected Berzerker/KMFDM mash-up, and Trey Azagthoth should honestly know better.

Because I’m not interested in coming across like some kind of genre traditionalist fucknut, let me make clear that the reason I dislike the experimentation on this album is not because it’s not typically a part of death metal. I dislike it because it is fucking terrible, and there is no way around that. This music is embarrassing, cringe-inducing, and frankly unacceptable from a band of this caliber. Sure, I probably wouldn’t be giving this album such a hard time if it was the debut album from some third-tier Belgian hardcore crew’s industrial/death metal side project, but the fact that this is Morbid Angel means that its noxious strains will be heard by tens of thousands of eager fans the world over. I find that upsetting. And really, to be honest, the problem is not that the album is relentlessly awful in any of the usual ways – poor musicianship, terrible production, badly constructed songs, and so forth - but that it is aggressively mediocre for most of its duration, punctuated by the too-frequent spells of shockingly awful half-industrial nonsense. Aggressive mediocrity is several shades more offensive than honestly come-by bad music.

For these reasons and so many more, Illud Dipissoff Fuckyourmother is that rarest of albums: a complete trainwreck. While it may be morbidly (har har) fascinating to watch this insanely ill-considered septic tank of an album unfold in all its bilious anti-glory, the schadenfreude does not last. Long after the album has bled mercifully into silence, all that is left behind is the gnawing, inescapable sadness of knowing that one of extreme metal’s foundational artists has been reduced to such hollow posturing and unforgivable banality. Still, perhaps I can take at least the smallest measure of solace from the fact that, while I have had to live with this album for a scant few weeks, its creators will have to live with it forever.

Listening to Illud Divinum Insanus really forces to make up your mind. I say first try to open your mind and later try to judge this piece of work. In my opinoin this work is good enough to actually buy and embrace. I think that it can hold comparison with their previous (Heretic) piece. Perhaps or certainly not as good as older works, but time will tell.

This album will eventually destroy this band like "Cold Lake" did to Celtic Frost. Honestly...i think Pete quit the band, surgery or not, he wouldnt have tolerated the making of this album had he have been involved.

I think if they do this kind of shit next time, the next one will be the one to destroy them. They have the ability and the know-how to right the ship. We'll see what they come up with. I think it's funny though that Pete had back surgery and then did the new Terrorizer album. Is he back touring with MA now?

I love bands challenging their listeners and pushing the envelope, but I don't like this album because some of the new effects on display sounds ridicilously bad in my ears. And it's a matter of taste, not a matter of outdated tastes. You're no blueprint mister

I think its an alright album. Whenever I play it I always skip the first 2 tracks. When I got it I was waiting for some crazy riffs at the beginning, but they never came... The good is really good IMO and the bad isnt even worth listening to. I think theyve become a shadow of their former selves

I really like the majority of this cd. I keep going back to listen to it nearly every day. There is definitely some crap, but the 5 or 6 songs that are good are REALLY good, in my opinion. The industrial parts are kind of weak, but I haven't listened to much industrial anyways. That opening riff on "Ten More Dead" is almost worth the price of the cd for me. That being said, I can understand why people are let down. Eight years to make a cd and it isn't monumental is disappointing.

Unfortunately, this reviewer is bang on the money. When I last saw these guys I was tripping my face off and I realised they have long ago crossed over into some kind of fairy land and become complete parodies of themselves. Sad to see. Destructhor wears a wig and is a pussy, David is a 40 year old douche looking to score, Pete has bailed, Trey, well what were you thinking? For too long now Trey has been prepared to release ~25 mins of music and call it a full album, pumped up with insubstantial & sub-par 'mood' songs. Their posturing seems pretty immature

All you huge fans of MA out there: isn´t thoose 3 albums with Steve fukin incredible? many of the "true" fans stopped listen to MA after Davids departure..I ask you, now that David is back:r u happy with his return or do u still deny Steve..I think David is the problem..Hail Gateways, better then Blessed, stronger then Domination!

After having stole the album a while back i have to say after a couple of listens i'm done with it.. i found one memorable riff and maybe 2 songs are acceptable. Sad to say because i've been a HUUUUUGE fan of MA going back to Covenant and i didnt like the pre- Coveneant material though. The whole satanix shit turned me off for ages until i seen Rapture on Much Music and i also at the same time period seen the banned video they put out because they drowned a priest in it LOL Good times :) Better of listening to Nader Sadek or Hate Eternal..

I think reviews like this and easily led sheep adopting the reviewers opinion is the source of the endless prodding. I have been a Morbid fan since Altars and I like it, not as much as the older stuff but there are some kick ass tunes here. I have played this for others and the reaction has been pretty unanimous, they liked it....before they knew it was Morbid. There is the other problem, expectation. I really doubt many of the bitching ones spent much time really absorbing this album. They probably heard a couple clips and bombs away. Now, just because some actually do like this album doesnt mean we are sucking anyone's dick, stop with the self projection and just come out of the closet.

It's 2011 for Fuck sajes do u want the same old shit as before they did that alrwady, they already killed it now they are killing untouched territory and that takes guts.and balls. David Vincent is a genious cause with all this hype good or bad, people are gnna talk about the album and listen to it. Just look at it like this, if u wanna here earlier stuff its there. If y wanna try to open ur mind to new possibility in death metal, listen to this.please we death metallers need ti stick together on this, seriously people been against death metal since it.began so don't b a hater. Love it cuz this may take death metal mainstream and we may start to see huge stadium shows by VADER or sumthin so just be easy and listen without a bias. It grows on u and ita catchy as hell. Jaxxon

This is worse than Metallicas downward spiral, that shit was gradual and disapointing everytime, this is jaw dropping you just came (no pun intended) out of the closet with a dick in each fist!! I am sooo disapointed in Trey and Tim, so easily converted to this garbage, this SHIT! From this day forth anyone who dare utter the words TOO EXTREME, DESTRUCTOS or RADIKULT to me, will be persocuted to the fullest extent of the hashest punishments imaginable. I am a fan from way back, got the first release of Altars of madness when it was released, I actully like Formulars and and Gateways, wasn,t too impressed with Heretic and have eagerly waited for this album, it was a shock when I first heard it, thought maybe it was a stuff up in the recording process and some other band was imputted but as i listen more to it a few of the songs are definately Morbid, but a few of them were just wrong, I am going to listen to it a lot more to see if it will grow on me, I know that all bands change the ingredients to try something new, lets hope this is it and they go back to the technicality and insane tempo changes that we as fans appreciate and back to the old ones theme, Ia Cthulhu...

I believe this shitty Morbid Angel album is getting more press than any of the current events. Personally I feel sorry for these guys. I'm sure it's gotta be rough for them with Pete in recovery, Trey and David being stuck in a non constructive creative relationship. I'd have to say without Pete things are bad enough but with Vincents out of touch influence its truly appalling. NOt to say Yeung is doing a bad job of course because he's not. The only hope this band has would be to get Trey and Pete together with some new blood.

Agree. I really didn't expected such a shitty album from this once great band. Say what you want, but even the promoting single of "Nevermore" was even not such bad promising. Too good to be true. Ok, MA will remain to me as one of the great originators of death metal, but I really don't think, that I'll buy this album even for MA album collection. Maybe it will be better if the band, featuring MORBID ANGEL members had released this album un der name (p.e.) R.ZOMBID RAMMSTANGEL. And will have to continue with normal MORBID ANGEL "I" album. I think the fans will greet with pleasure the normal MA album even if they'll release it after 10 years after "Heretic". I.T.Warpath

Kill-a-cop-kill-a-cop-kill-a-cop... LOL "Body Count called; They want their lyrics back." In my country, Sue Magazine gave 9/10 and it said something like: "it's been 8 years since MA released an album and it's been 16 years since MA released a significant album...MA without David Vincent was crippled...with Illud Divinum Insanus MA returns to the level of their earlier albums." And the reviewer also said positive things about the industrial elements. Is the new Vital Remains album possibly coming out in the near future to possibly comfort the disappointed fans? Tim Yeung has played in VR, as I remember.

Excellent album. Perhaps this record shocks the majority of fans, but several "old ones" appreciate it. Morbid Angel has absolutely nothing to prove, and they have the right to do what they want (that's the most important thing for an artist). If you don't like it, ignore it. By my side, it's not the album that I expected, but with MA, you never have what you expect, that's the mark of this band, and that's why I like it. Also, Death Metal tracks of this album are very good, so, what the fuck ?

How can anyone defend this album? This is worse than Cryptopsy's betrayal album, and THAT was just plain bad. This is even worse than Saint Anger. I'm all for experimenting, but.. This isn't experimenting. This is throwing away what ever legacy Morbid Angel built on solid Death Metal.. And making music that sounds more like a collaboration between Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie than Death Metal, let alone Morbid Angel style Death Metal. And if you're going to sound like Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, you're going to be treated like those two hacks. Ya ya "IF U HATE THIS UR AN UNDERGROUND PURIST/ELITIST". Great argument, it seems "elitist" is the equivalent of anyone with common sense and a moderately good taste in music. This album was crap under any standard, and would still suck even if it was released by another band.

There is some decent to good stuff on here, "Blades," "Existo," "Beauty," "Nevermore," etc. which would have probably sounded awesome with a proper mix. I don't think we can even call this a death metal album with vocals like this and guitars and drums so low in the mix at points...I don't think it is QUITE as bad as some people are saying here...There are like 3 unlistenable tracks...I don't even HATE "I am Morbid" or "Destructos," but I am a fan of industrial as well as some black and roll type stuff..I think if this album came out under a different moniker people wouldn't be quite so troubled by it..

Ok, let's not be TOO negative here. The case the album comes in is very good quality plastic, if you simply throw away the contents it could be used to hold other, more worthy CD's. It's also useful to support cold drinks on warm days without leaving unsightly rings on your tables. The disc itself could come in handy at the skeet range, or it could be used as a signal mirror in a pinch.

Why is the rationale of the defenders based purely on "it's ambitious and novel therefore it's good"? The album could well be a go for broke attempt to create something innovative and out-of-leftfield. And yes, the band probably did do it for themselves and couldn't give a toss what the naysayers think. All of the above is no doubt true. This still doesn't mean the album should be rated more favourably and on a curve, though. It's a WEAK effort. A couple of half-decent, but relatively dated sounding and non-groundbreaking death metal songs interspersed with poorly done attempts at industrial crossover, the most appalling lyrics ever committed to a major death metal release and shocking production. Yep, bad bad album. To the people supporting this album, stop getting so ad hominem with people who don't like it - as if there's some magical x-factor about it that you get and the rest of the laymen don't. It sucks, and it's OK to say it sucks. They could very well come back with flying colours on 'J', and they'll still be a great live band. It's just that they've dumped a steaming turd this time around. Bands occasionally do just release shitty albums and this one is VERY shitty - get over yourselves and stop acting as if you have some privileged access to taste that the rest of the metal world doesn't. The fact that the band's Facebook has been censored and packed with pre-packaged template blurbs from scene luminaries coming out to support the album says everything.

ummmm why is this happening? There are no other bands on earth that can do what Morbid Angel does. I'm all for a band progressing but in this case the fans love you for a reason. Why change, why not just progress. Because it's been too long since the last album I would put it on a pedestal and expected nothing but the best. Which I thought would come natural for them. I was wrong this has just brought back bad memories of every Metallica album after the Black album. FUCK. JOKES ON ALL THEIR FANS. Damn....

What the hell is this? I even like radikult, it's so crappy that it's funny. The big problem is that it's on a morbid angel album. This sentence of the 1st review is exactly my opinion: "I have no idea just what they’re attempting to do, and the rattling, unfocused sound doesn’t indicate that they do either." But for the whole album.

Download it, save the few decent tracks and delete the rest. Save your money and send these clowns a message. "Experiment" all you like, but do not try to con your long-time supporters out of their money by packaging a big bag of shit under the MA logo. Let us decide whether or not we're into bogus "industrial" nonsense and half-baked Soulfly raps; don't ram them down our throats and then try to tell us that we're just "closed-minded" when we think they suck. There are few things as annoying as having some gassy windbag climbing on their high horse to inform the VAST MAJORITY of fans unhappy with what they've heard that they're somehow "wrong" because they're "closed-minded". Trey and Co. have had EIGHT YEARS to record, release and perform whatever kind of music they like, if they wanted to record an album full of "techno" or "jungle" or whatever, what was stopping them? They CHOSE to release their "experiments" under the MA name simply because they knew they'd make money with it regardless of the content. That demonstrates a lack of integrity and a TOTAL lack of regard for the fans who expected something else and ended up being punished for their loyalty.

THANKS FOR BANNING MY IP ADDRESS!!! Evidently a bunch of democracy hating pussies run this website, because they banned my IP address from being able to read or post Lashes. The reason? Apparently I posted too many comments that reflect positively on this album. Now answer me this... why is this website so desperate to create negative consensus for this album that they would go to the extent of banning someone from commenting? If the whole function of Lashes is to allow your readers a voice and a response to the reviews, then you should not be censoring and silencing people. If your journalists can't take the critique of their work, then they shouldn't be writing in the public domain. So much for freedom of speech. Absolutely pathetic, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Ok, i ve got to say that i come here regularly to see what people think about this record, lol, its really funny how much controversy it triggered through the fans, but i will say it again, despite that i have all their cd's until heretic, this one is a record that i wont buy, because there is one thing that is sure, that it is really sick how really bad this record is, morbid angel always had atmosphere and feeling even on their more furious records, you had to listen to the record from the first song until the last to really grasp the whole feeling of it, to get into it, and this is something that is not happening with this one, its very generic and has no purpose on it wants to do, one of the songs is a complete rip off from heretic and another one from domination, well after 8 years waiting for this one, i got to say that they should better split up, and do some side projects, david vincent should definitely stay on genitorturers, he adds only bad elements to the sound of the band, his voice is really bad and very high to the mix and he seems he tries really hard to sound angry and its obvious he is doing it because it is supposed to be a death metal record after all, but i m sure he would do differently if he had the option, anyway, the band needs a big slap for that, nobody should buy this record, end of story

The main issue I have with the electronic tracks isn't that they are electronic tracks on an MA album, but that they're just terrible songs. You'd never know that Vincent or Trey had ever even listened to that kind of music from hearing that garbage. Being different and experimental doesn't automatically make them good songs, people.

Exactly. A shitty song is a shitty song regardless of how it's spun or what the intentions behind it were. Some of the lyrics on this album are amateurish and idiotic beyond belief, just staggeringly awful. You can't spit on a cupcake and call it frosting; this is an ill-conceived and poorly-executed album full of music that will appeal to absolutely no one. I realize the ultra-fanboys out there are going to defend this thing with everything they have, but come on, it's terrible. No self-respecting death metal aficionado can seriously say they think "Radikult" or "Too Extreme!" or that Destructo thing are quality songs, or even mediocre ones for that matter. No MA fan wants to hear David Vincent "rap" about how bad-ass he is (what the FUCK is that"killa killa cop" shit supposed to be?). "Extreme" metal my ass: Soulfly rips are not "extreme" in any way. If you really like it, cool, good for you. But don't tell me I'm wrong for recognizing it for what it is, a disastrous attempt to be something they're not. It's a dated, stupid, insulting failure.

Yeah, because three experimental songs on an album of otherwise awesome Death Metal makes an album a travesty. Give me a fucking break. CD players have skip buttons, and if you use MP3s you can easily delete three tracks from your playlist. Fact is, this album is yet again an amazing offering by the most forward thinking band in Metal.

Explain what exactly makes those abysmal tracks "experimental"? The bogus, stupid lyrics? The completely out-of-place "techno" beats? MA "experimented" on "FFTTF" and "Gateways" too, those "experiments" were at least not totally out of place on a death metal album. The album is a total failure, especially for David Vincent who is beyond embarrassing. "Killa killa killa cop"....LOL, you gotta be shittin' me bro.

All the hate for this album makes me wonder if half of you fuckwits have ever even listened to Morbid Angel in your life? Go have a look at the reviews of all their albums on Metal Archives... http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Morbid_Angel ...and you'll notice that every single release has been panned by some reviewers for supposedly "shitting on their legacy". EVERY SINGLE ALBUM! Even Altars of Madness gets spewed at by some critics for being too experimental. Blessed Are The Sick is called too slow with rubbish interludes. Covenant is called mainstream sell out. Domination is called a dumbed down Death Metal travesty. Formulas is panned as a frenetic experiment in weirdness, again with too many instrumental passages. Gateways is said to be too slow and insanely boring. Heretic is apparently still fresh enough in most people's minds for nostalgia to have not yet set in, and is dumped on as again being too experimental. There is a theme here people. Morbid Angel marches to their own (techno?!) beat and DON'T GIVE A FUCK WHAT YOU OR I THINK. Indeed, they never have.

We may hate the album but we LOVE Blades of Baal hehe. The albums that you mention today are totally accepted by the majority of morbid angel and death metal funs(exept from Heretic ofc which is like a collection of morbid angel b-sides) who i think really like some atmospheric tracks along with the real songs, besides death metal is dark and atmospheric music and that also has set morbid angel apart from the typical death metal bands,we are talkin about the history of morbid angel there. The problem is that this album is 50% death metal or metal and 50% industrial, techno or whatever i dont care. I give my money to buy a cd and listen to death metal not some third grade industrial,if i wanted to listen to this(50%) i would have bought a marilyn manson cd,things are very simple

No shit they are accepted by most Morbid Angel and Death Metal fans. That is EXACTLY what I am saying. They are now accepted, but at the time, people hated each one of those albums and considered them terrible representations of the band. Without the Internet, 10 years from now Illud Divinum Insanus would rightfully be recognized as a great album. With the Internet, fucktards are going to continue the trendiness of bashing this album. Either way, Morbid Angel still doesn't give a fuck. They follow their own muse, which is what makes them actual artists, rather than scenester dipshits like most other Death Metal bands around today. NOW BOW BEFORE THY ANCIENT ONES YOU WORTHLESS FOOLS!!!

There are no Ancient Ones anymore, since David Vincents return the lyrics are more... or less mindless religion bashing as far as i can see and his techno stuff crawled upon this album. Lovecraftian and Sumerian themes were established before Vincent joined MA so the first albums were mix of anti-christian and ancient ones lyrics. But notice that how MA released albums the ancient ones themes were more and more left out. Until suddenly Vincent left the band and whoala you have FFTTF and Gateways which is pure lovecraft and the bunch.

Part of the problem might be that, as it's been quoted many times, MA doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks -- and that has both positive and negative aspects to it. Hank Shteamer said it well (below) when he mentioned the loopiness and cheesy aspects of some of their earlier work and influences. The bad thing here being, they seem to have become even more myopic in their creativity, and it's illustrated unfortunately in the music here. Not some devastating letdown, as who can ever live up to the demands of anticipation, just a decent EP with some puerile stuff spackled onto it.

I think it’s worth revisiting the point that every Morbid Angel record sounds drastically different, and also “bad” in some way (too clean, too murky, too strong, too weak). To expand upon that, being a fan of this band in the David Vincent years—I’ve been a die-hard since about ’93—has always been about reconciling the incredibly savage and awesome (all of Covenant, basically) with the borderline cheesy. Think of Vincent’s goofball laugh on “Maze of Torment,” or the MIDI-style instrumentals on Blessed Are the Sick or the—for lack of a better term—radio-friendly tracks like “Dawn of the Angry” or Caesar’s Palace” on Domination, both of which I love, but they still walk the line of questionable taste in pretty much the exact same way that “I Am Morbid” does. Then there’s the whole matter of Trey’s constant shouting-out of folks like Anthony Robbins and Deepak Chopra, or the band’s horrific graphic sense (people have been ripping on the cover of Illud, but what about the cover of Domination?!?). What I’m saying is that, it’s not like Morbid Angel has ever really been some sort of bastion of stone-faced death-metal purism and that this new twist is some sort of huge, shocking concession. Since the early ’90s at least, they’ve portrayed themselves as a bunch of extremely loopy, out-there dudes who happen to be great at writing death metal. They’ve always been completely willing to fall on their face if it meant trying out something different, and I deeply respect them for that. That Trey is so willing to let his dorkiness hang out there—the Super Nintendo shout-outs in the Domination thank-you list, e.g.!—totally endears him to me. I'm a big proponent of "Do I contradict myself? / Very well, then, I contradict myself" in any kind of art, and Morbid Angel embodies that in spades.I think the important counterweight to all this is the Steve Tucker period. While I enjoy Formulas and Gateways, both are far more generic albums than anything from the Vincent years. To me, there are no tracks on either of those albums that can hold a candle to core Morbid Angel masterpieces like “Rapture” or “Lord of All Fevers and Plagues,” and if that was all I knew of Morbid Angel, they wouldn’t really mean anything to me at all. (As it stands, they’re probably my favorite metal band, period.) During the Tucker period, you saw what a “pure” Morbid Angel would look like, i.e., one with a lot of that lovable loopiness stripped away, and honestly I found it somewhat boring. Heretic is another matter—the songwriting and production improved by leaps and bounds on that—but think of all the insane filler on that album! I just don’t understand why people are pretending that this new left turn is any more weird, surprising or (if you want to look at this way) disappointing than any other oddball aesthetic move they’ve ever pulled. The fact is that I'd infinitely prefer a Morbid record sprinkled with weird industrial detours than with tacked-on throwaway tracks like "Drum Check".

Exactly. How any Morbid Angel fan could not be pleased with Existo Vulgoré, Blades for Baal, 10 More Dead, Nevermore, and Beauty Meets Beast is beyond me. Even I Am Morbid is pretty cool. I can understand the dislike for Too Extreme!, Destructos Vs. the Earth / Attack, and Radikult as they are very experimental. But even these songs are not complete failures, with some cool parts built in. What the response to this album actually represents more than any supposed lack of quality in the visionary songwriting of the band, is the increasingly narrow focus of so-called "Metal fans". In other words, it is not Morbid Angel circa 2011 that is a parody of itself, but rather Metal culture and its disgusting conservatism. This album is a transgression of the box the genre has built for itself. Bravo to Morbid Angel for having the guts to continually push the envelope regardless of what the ignorant masses will say. Such is the hallmark of brilliance!

Face reality, MA fucked up big time with this mess, if that crap is their idea of "progress" then they've been given way too much credit to begin with. Nothing was preventing those guys from doing a side project featuring whatever kind of music they liked: putting it out under the MA name, however, created certain expectations. Those expectations were not only not met, they were obliterated under a sea of awfulness. I've heard better lyrics at high school talent shows. Vincent needs to take his plastic pants back to whatever pathetic porn metal band he in this week and stop inflicting his silliness on a wide audience. he blows & so does this album.

I won't rag on Trey and Vincent too much, since they have previously created great music. It seems that in this case, they've moved away from the aesthetic that Morbid Angel fans admired; maybe it's nostalgia for their personal lives, but it's just sounds like rehashed material from lesser bands. You also can't overlook the fact that both these guys inhabit small worlds that they both overwhelmingly fill up with their egos and needs (obviously, at times to their creative detriment).

After hearing the album, I have to say these reviews and all the negative feedback are a fucking joke. One dumb shit on the Internet said it sucks, now all the drones march in line like good little automatons. Metal used to be about thinking for yourself and bucking the trend, now its all about mindless idiots who can't think for themselves, but think they are cool because they listen to aggressive music. What-fucking-ever. Trey and company are soooooooo above all of that. The new album is actually a continuation of Morbid Angel's legacy. Sure the experimental "Too Extreme!" and "Radikult" are left of center, but this is to be expected. The band's affinity for Liabach is well documented, as is their love of experimentation. The rest of the tracks are pretty much standard Morbid Angel. So all this shitting on the band is over a few stray tracks, when in fact most of their releases have had a few stray tracks. I remember reading a review of Blessed Are The Sick in Metal Maniacs back in the day, and it was the same negative whining because of the slower approach and the piano on "In Remembrance". Now that album is rightfully considered as a masterpiece. Same thing with "Where The Slime Live" on Domination, I remember a lot of negativity towards that song as well, now it's a Morbid Angel staple. Basically all the haters need to drink a big cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP because Illud Divinum Insanus is a solid Death Metal album with a little bit of experimentation thrown in to keep things interesting.

Heard about 3/4 of the album so far, I seriously don't want to go any further. Blades of Baal is a really good song, beauty meets beast was at least decent. The rest is either forgettable pseudo death metal or industrial-pop crap with the worst being Radikult (is he really saying Kill a Cop??) REALLY??). I really don't understand what they are trying the achieve with this hodgepodge of styles. Do they really expect the fans to embrace a mess of ineffective death metal and marilyn manson. To be honest, Vincent's vocals are way too loud and sounds processed...First album in seven years with the original singer, way to go!

This is saddening. I really wish these old farts would do solo and side projects if they want to experiment beyond any reasonable realm of their original sound. Hint, to all musicians, from the very massive (*cough* Metallica) to the esoteric (Cryptopsy/Morbid Angel): TAKE A LESSON FROM EMPEROR (all caps for emphasis and metalnerd RAGE). Most of us will remember Emperor as one of the most ingenious bands of all time - because they knew when to quit. Go out on top, and you will remain a legend forever. On the other hand, Ihsahn is still making some brilliant and very intense metal, so it's not really that big of a deal that Emperor is gone. I might be singing a different tune if Trey and Dave had decided to start a new band called "Radikult Extreme!!!"

I'm still in shock....if they wanted to do some industrial rave album make a side project but wtf were the thinking in assuming that MA fans would like this? The ONLY explanation is they've been dropping ecstasy and it sounded awesome to them and they thought it would be a great idea. That has to be it...because until I dropped some ecstasy and went to the most awesome rave I hated that music, but I would never want to mix metal with Rave such a stupid fucking idea. Unless the new CD comes with Ecstasy I suggest no one buys it because that's the only possible way it sounds good.

Ok its stupid to start a debate about vocals on a death metal band, because the vocals are always so intergrated to the sound and so distorted that they dont play such a huge role on the feeling of the record, so actually what is worth talking about is the music, and from all their records heretic was the one that i could not get into, but mostly because of the production not of the songwriting, this last one seems to fail in every aspect and i dont care if Vincent did the vocals, personaly i like the vocals rutan does on hate eternal but he wouldnt save that record even if he was the one that do the singing

Even the songs that could be classed as death metal are run-of-the-mill and not very inspiring. Figures though. Vincent has only come back for the money and lost the passion for death metal years ago. This release is ignorant, disrespectful and even if they have "diversified", the songs are still a pile of unadulterated toss.. Should have stuck with the superior Steve Tucker. This is sad. With the recent success of Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth (two bands Morbid used to run circles around) and the rise of countless death-core rip offs I thought Morbid Angel would come back with a ripping album that would reclaim their place on top of the death metal throne. Alas though this is not to be as Illud Divinum Insanus sounds almost nothing like the band that bought the metal world to its knees with "Alters of Madness" way back in 1989. Upon my 1st listen to "Too Exteme!" I thought I accidentily downloaded a Static-X b-side. Other awful tracks include the cheesy "I Am Morbid" with a studio implanted crowd chanting and the absoluetly awful "Radikult".These chessy faux industrial metal songs couldnt even make it onto Fear Factory''s "Digimortal" Other tracks like 10 More Dead and Destructos Vs Earth are not as bad as the previous tracks i mentioned but are just 3rd rate metal (not even death) songs. Its not all bad though “Existo Vulgoré,” “Blades for Baal,” “Nevermore,” and “Beauty Meets Beast,” are all cool songs but still only showing flashes of the brilliance this band onced possessed. It's such a shame they couldntve come out with an album to compete with Cannibal Corpse, it wouldntve been hard as that band has been spinning its stuck creative wheels releasing weaker versions of its last ass kicker of an album (2004's "The Wretched Spawn") over the past few years. In the end its not as bad as "St. Anger" as some are claiming it to be this at least has 4 good songs and 3 listenable ones and the production isnt as grating but this is the bands final "Fall From Grace"

You know, back when I first read the new Morbid Angel album would carry influences from electronic music, which was before anything else had been said about it at all, I got a little excited. I mean, I like electronic music. I like death metal. I figured if anyone could pull off a combination of the two, it would be Morbid Angel. Except when the band said they wanted to introduce elements of electronic music to their own, they weren't talking about electronic music, but Marylin Manson. I just wish they had said that from the beginning "hey guys we're doing a Marylin Manson album, aren't you glad you waited all this time" instead of getting my hopes up. That would have been nice of them

I thought this would be something like a Behemoth rip-off, as they are like the modern Morbid Angel. Wow, I really need to listen to this to assess its terribleness.

Actually retard, they formed in '84, making them around 27 years old - you obviously know nothing, absolutely nothing. I haven't listened to this yet, but the two reviews had me weeping in absolute despair at what has come to pass.

and let me add: I kind of feel bad for Tim and Destructhor. Tim did a great job laying down drum tracks very similar to what Sandoval would have done. No blame can be placed on him for this. As for Destructhor - this guy joins one of the most legendary death metal bands only to have things crumble around him into compete mediocrity. Seriously, does anyone think he had "Too Extreme!" and "Radikult" in mind when he agreed to play guitar for Morbid fucking Angel? I doubt it. Can't point our fingers at him for this one. No, the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of Trey and Evil D. They birthed this abomination. The other two are collateral damage.

The new Haunted? It's awful, but they didn't have the legacy to destroy like Morbid Angel. I challenge anyone to sit down and listen to a song like "Unholy Blasphemies" and then ponder "Too Extreme!" and not want to shed a tear.

3 or so songs are decent. The rest is just for fans of Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and genres similar to them. This just makes for a expensive drink coaster. I am all for experimentation. I like a few industrial bands. I like Mortiis and a few of Samaels albums, but this is not as good as those.

I'm all for a band expanding/experimenting with their sound, but to fall back on horrible musical trends from upwards 15 years ago? Jesus Christ, guys...are you F'n kidding me? I'll be wiping with this one while I listen to the new Blut Aus Nord album.

I can't believe you guys even gave it a 3.5 and a 3.9. A 1 would have sufficed, for Blades of Baal exclusively. This is going to go down as a historically bad album...

dear Morbid Angel: I'm fairly certain that Metallica weren't making a bet with you when they recorded St.Anger to find out which band could alienate the most fans with a single album.

It's interesting to see two bad scores, none of which being written by the Rev. This album really sounds awful. Dan's review really set this in stone. I feel your frustration/pain/astonishment more through the review then any other I have read on the site. To many great quotes to rehash them all (unfortunatly they don't bode well for Morbid Angel)
