Ever sit back, crack open a cold one, and wonder "gee golly, what would it sound like if some sludge metal band decided to go black metal?". Yeah, me neither - not that it doesn't sound pretty cool, but because the idea of mixing a bunch of stoned southerners with a bunch of fire-breathing norwegian forest-dwellers just didn't seem very plausible. Members of the band include members of Soilent Green, Acid Bath & Crowbar such as Ben Falgoust, man these guys get around almost as much as Hellhammer... anyway, yeah, Goatwhore, for those of you who didn't see them with say... Nile, Kreator, Vader & Amon Amarth, play a very groovy, rhythmic Black/Death/Sludge kind of deal, dirty, heavy, balls out, and just a bit freakin repetitive. For playing a style you don't really see popping up everywhere, Goatwhore sure don't do anything that new, some of the groove riffs in this are deader than that ol' bloodhound laying on the dock by the bayou, mosquitos biting at him, but he don't care none, he ain't worried bout a damn thing. Unfortunately, the same thing goes for most of these sludge bands like CoC or Crowbar, the mentality is like "why even bother, when you know something that gets the job done- even if its been done to death?" ... oh right, to make me buy your record and not slam into it in a review like a semi. And theres all kinds of blast beats and shrieked vocals and death-growls and stuff of that nature, but the rhythm and riffs dominate. Ben, no more clean vocals, please. Yeah, you read right, really really bad, monotone vocals come from the way of falgoust, you think they're bad on disc, wait till you hear them live, where it just sounds like distorted emo whining... ugh, for twelve tracks too... ugh. The production is dirty, gritty, sort of in a good way, but not completely, it takes away from the instruments enough to be noticed, and it sounds very flat, it's not an exciting sound, I really can't headbang to it all that much. Now, I never bothered to hear Goatwhore's first album, "The Eclipse of Ages into Black", reasoning was at the time: fuck that, my Kreator and Tankard collections are more important. So on that note, I can't really give a comparison between the albums, but I'd be utterly shocked if that album wasn't pretty damned similar, hopefully minus the clean vocals, Ben is obviously not Charlie Rytkonen of Lefay. Overall, Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun is a pretty mediocre product, I would much rather be listening to the awesomeness that is Soilent Green. This just seems tired and dull... mostly, since there are some nifty Black Metal moments and some swampy groove and heavy as fuck riffs, and some annoying clean vocals. Buy if you are very interested by the style at the very least, or if you have to have every album that drops out of the pussing womb that is the New Orleans Sludge metal scene.

I'd like to say that if I wrote this review now, I'd have scored it much, much higher. I guess I just didn't "get" this band back then. This is a pretty good album, overall. Give 'em a listen before making a judgment.

Goatwhore sucked on the Venom tour. Now I have to sit through their gay set at the Celtic Frost show.

This is not a bad album. If you like newer Satyricon and sludgy black and roll with good raw production this is for you!

Being a huge Soilent Green and Acid Bath fan, Goatwhore has always intrigued me, even though im not a very big Blackj Metal fan. However, a couple of years back i remember being very disappointed with their debut, but ive thoroughly enjoyed this album. I really like the old school thrashiness mixed in with the sludge and Black metal, and Ben's vocals are briliant as usual. I think his clean vocals are okay but they arent that new, he's been using those droning, almost spoken clean vocals with Soilent for a long time, they are just mixed very low. The dirty, raw production suits the band well & i disagree with the groovier riffs being boring. Signed to Metal Blade now i cant wait for the next album, and as much as i like the production i would actually like to see them resort to a thick, cleaner more modern production next time, kinda in the vein of A Deleted Symphony for the Beaten Down.

I had no expectations about this album. Im not gonna lie, I bought it because I liked the cover art. But when I played it for the first time I was bombarded by the music. I loved every minute of it. The beauty of the album lies in the simplicity of the music and the vocals compliment it perfectly. I had no problem with Bens clean vocals, it just creates that evil atmosphere. It is now 2004 and this is the best thing I heard all year.

you're right Joe, about them sounding great live. I'm always pleased to see Goatwhore on the bill of a show I'm attending, but for some reason, they never seem to capture that special something for me on record.

Goatwhore is the best american metal band we have right now. Funeral dirge for the rotting sun, is in my opinion is one of the best albums to come out this year, it does not sound reptitive , I think it is catchy as hell, Ben's clean singing is great, I had the pleasure of seeing Goatwhore live 5 times this year. they sound really good live, the way Sammy and Ben trade vocals is really cool. Don't rip on Goatwhore they are true metal. Look at all the pathetic albums most american metal bands put out, As far as I'm concerned Goatwhore is Celtic Frost reincarnated on speed. I want all of you who rip on them to give them another listing too. All hail the goat!!!

As for clean singing never sounding good for a band like this maybe you should check out Skinless' latest and while your at it also Nightrage - Sweet Vengence.

Perhaps not with your dissection, but with your conclusion. This is not quite the record I was hoping for from these guys. Multi project people sometimes get stretched too thin, I think. Maybe Ben should stick with Soilent Green. The whole NOLA orgy is starting to create deep mediocrity.

Difference between Celtic Frost & Goatwhore: Celtic Frost OWNS, is classic material, did something new. Goatwhore is Mediocre, tired material, I get none of the energy I got from listening to say... Morbid Tales or Emperors Return... I did give points for effort though, but if you want a good band like CF, buy the new Usurper.

Sorry buddy, but I think you missed the point. Ever hear of a band called Celtic Frost? If you work for a website like this, you should have. That is what the clean vocals are doing - it's so obvious that he is paying homage to Tom Warrior by imitating him. You could even ask him yourself, he would (and has in interviews) completely admit it. And actually, this album is very different than their first. This new album is slower and "groovier", for lack of a better time. This is total Celtic Frost worship, so throw it on and rock out. Can't headbang to this? Sorry, but that's ridiculous. One of my favorite metal albums of the year.

...has always been the way that i describe Goatwhore, they're just boring, and clean vocals? are they actually trying to get liberal metalheads like me into crap like this? Don't think so...even i know clean vocals won't ever work for a band like Goatwhore, even if they're good...
