Album Review

Score 5.7

In tune with the scores of other bands that have abandoned metal altogether and gone for something different is Anathema. With A Fine Day to Exit, they showed that their involvement with most anything heavy was over, and it was in fine form that they did so. It was anyone’s guess whether or not the follow up would feel as fresh and exciting, and it pains me to say that, for the most part, A Natural Disaster doesn’t live up. There are undoubtedly some wonderful pieces of music to be found here- even some surprising moments of relative heaviness, and there isn’t really anything truly bad to speak of, but as a whole, the album doesn’t mature well or captivate near enough to become anything more than an occasional casual listen. In trying to judge this album more fairly, I’ve tried time and time again to see if I only think it’s somewhat weak in comparison with A Fine Day to Exit, but even on its own it’s rather lackluster. It seems that there are three different varieties of song here; those that start slowly and take far too long to achieve anything, those that simply fail to go anywhere at all, and those that are actually a worthy listen. It’s disappointing that I’ve found myself coming to such a conclusion because at first it seemed like an album that would be a joy to listen to repeatedly and digest. Breaking the album up into the three aforementioned categories is pretty easy. Songs like Harmonium, Closer, Pulled Under at 2000 Meters a Second, and Flying begin differently than each other but all have the same effect; they all seem to have the potential to end up at a wonderful climax, but none do. Harmonium and Pulled Under are the closest things to heavy on A Natural Disaster, but it seems like a ploy to achieve intensity that went awry. Closer has cool vocoder vocal effects but they fail to mask an underdeveloped song. Flying is what appears to me to be an attempt at moody post rock that crescendos from a calm start to an underwhelming finish. Sadly, while none of these songs are bad or even unpleasant to hear, they fail to inspire awe and I think that’s what the goal of this type of music is. There are two tracks here that I find no pleasure at all in hearing. Oddly enough, one is the title track. A simple tune fronted by female vocals that spends six and a half going absolutely nowhere, it’s hard to get through even half the duration before it seems to have overstayed its welcome. There’s hardly any explanation for it other than that it might be a song thrown out by Antimatter from their latest album’s sessions. And to name an album after such an atrocity? I don’t know what they were thinking. The other song that’s completely useless is Childhood Dream. In their favor, it’s only a short two-minute time filler and tracks like this generally aren’t very appealing, but it still begs the question: why include it? On a lighter note, there are some very good songs on A Natural Disaster as well. Balance, Electricity, and Violence are all enjoyable, not growing tiresome with repeated listens. Electricity would have to be my favorite by a long shot; its subtleties become more apparent with every listen and it’s done with surprising sensitivity that may even top most of A Fine Day to Exit. Unfortunately, it’s far too short, keeping it from becoming the redeeming quality of an otherwise mostly bland album. Balance is good for the same reason as Electricity; there’s much attention paid to detail and the atmosphere that is created is a vast improvement over some of the lacking others. Where Electricity is too short, Violence is too long, but not so much so that it detracts from all the good things it has to offer. It’s an instrumental that spans over ten minutes although it fades into obscurity by the seven or eight minute mark and goes on, probably for no other reason than to extend the albums play time and so that they can say they made a ten-minute song. Are You There is the only track not yet mentioned and is the only one I’m still undecided on. That’s a good representation of the album as a whole. On the one hand, it’s often very pretty, but it seems a bit rushed and as though not enough attention was given to it to realize its potential. Sadly, A Natural Disaster is not something I can see myself wanting to listen to very often.

I liked Pulled Under at 2000 Meters a Second, but do agree that it never really went anywhere... @ Nailed To Gold: I completely agree, Serenades was awesome, "Sleepless" alone..

I cant stand the clean vocals. How I yearn for the return to a Serenades sound.

Wake the F up people... The dumbest thing i've heard in all of music lately is a couple times i heard anathema called a radiohead clone, thats the equivalent of saying that slayer and pantera are the same band, gtfo. btw anathema > radiohead no questions asked

Wake the fuck up people what's wrong with you. I've heard people say the dumbest shit like how anathema is a radiohead clone?? Man that is the single most ignorant thing i've heard recently in music. Thats like people who only listen to mainstream hip hop and think that Slayer and Pantera are the same band. GTFO (btw radiohead is really good regardless but anathema is > than radiohead period.) anathema is one of those bands that have so much talent and are starving man, starving artists but you know what they know i t i bet and i know it , and others must know it too, real musicians, all the money in the world would never be worth trading for that kind of talent or even for other REAL musicians to hear your music and just know it like that.

Anathema means everything and i dont say this coz im a big fan of them its just the truth. All you have to do(fans of Anathema) is this: listen more deeply, more carefull. The last album means exactelly what they feel. Nothing more, nothing less.

Perfect Review, couln't have put it better. I fet that a lot of songs go nowehere, are too miserable, and have no focal point (whereas 'One last goodbye' et al do...) bad move anathema, i hope ye do better next time...clser is the best example of a song with potential for me - and the title track and childhood dream are indeed a waste of digital media....

I have only heard the title track off the new album and it hasn't really grabbed me. I started listening at A Silent Enigma and was disappointed by its follow up Eternity. I investigated the early stuff and was totally put off my Darren White's vocals - the most overated singer ever! Alternative IV was much better and then Judgement. Judgement is phenomenal and IMHO untoppable. A Fine Day To Exit was a departure but still enjoyable and at least on a par with Alternative IV. It definitely improved over time and repeated listenings. Hopefully the new one will do the same...

No climax in Pulled Under at 2000 Meters a Second? ert? I disagree with much of your review, especially your rating on songwriting. For myself, Anathema has always be the epitome of the old adage, more is less.

No I don't think the band is homosexual now, they're just not making great albums like they used to. It's a shame too, they used to be one of my favorites. I just don't find myself listening to A Fine Day To Exit or A Natural Disaster anywhere near as much as Alternative 4, Judgement, Eternity, and The Silent Enigma.

Is ok, personally I think Fine day blows it away, I just can't get into it. Do you like Eternity? That is another one of there that is hard to enjoy. Have you ever heard Evereve and their album Storm Birds? That is some pretty good shit, sounds a lot like mid period Anathema.

kinda long, but hey, obviously you took time to clear up your confusion and describe to us what didn't work, so thanks for that can anyone compare "a fine day to exit" with "judgement" for me? i have "judgement" and is one of my most favored albums, it's just so...damn, passionate? poetic? even if the lyrics dont work for you...god that music, PERFECT! anyways, i just got "Silent enigma" as recommended by Lee and obviously it's their heavier side, and i love it...it took me a while to enjoy "Judgement" but i've already found myself humming and singing along to "silent enigma" anyways, back to my point, ive been kinda arguing with myself to get "A fine day to exit" but most of the reviews ive read say that it's pretty boring...any other opinions?

The obviously fell below your standards ERK and became homosexual......that is the only thing that can explain two bad albums in a row right?

What happened to these guys? They used to be so damn good. All the albums from A Silent Enigma to Judgement absolutely rule, but now they've gotten kind of boring and have lost their way. There's a couple good songs on this album and the last, but not enough to keep me interested for very long. I hope they find their way again very soon, because 2 bad albums in a row is hard to forgive.

I will probably grab this anyways, but sound like it A. Won't top Antimatters awesome lights out, and B. Anathema, like Amorphis and some other that went mellow with an incrediable album are having trouble getting over the mediocre hump. You review both this and Beyond Dawn correct? We seem to have similiar tastes in the Metal Bands that don't play metal catagory.
