Album Review

First off, I need to apologize.  My first and last experience with Greece’s long-running Rotting Christ was 1996's Triarchy of Lost Lovers. I had their logo emblazoned on my denim jacket in High School and college, so I thought I should at least check out one of their albums, and I chose the album where they apparently shifted into a more gothic metal mid-paced approach, as opposed to the black metal I had heard so much about. I wasn't impressed and left them alone for the next decade.

So here I am thirteen years and six albums later, reviewing Aealo, the band's 10th album, and from what I gather from my modest research, the album continues the band delving back into their black/death metal past, if on a more epic and ethnic scale. What immediately grabbed my attention was the continuing use of a traditional Greek choir (apparently in use for the last couple of albums), which adds an aura of Hellenic grandiosity to the proceedings, much in the same way that Viking/Pagan metal bands create their own Norse atmospheres and in which Orphaned Land has an Arabic mystique. And in the same way that Ex Deo failed. With the band actually being from Greece, you can sense their inherent geography and mythical/historical seeds in every song. The choirs and synths are superbly utilized and develop the music’s balance between Greek pomp and stern metal.

Right off the get-go, with some grandiose female chanting over a vicious blast beat, the title track draws you into a world of bronze-clad battling hoplites, haughty politicians, gorgeous toga-clad maidens and petty gods. The track bleeds seamlessly into the energetic “Eon Aenaos” which focuses more on Sakis’ gruff throaty vocals, but still has slivers of solemn regality amid its chunky pace. The third track, “Demonon Vrosis” actually settles things down a bit and reminded me of the band Triarchy of Lost Lover/A Dead Poem era, but glossed with all the Hellenic majesty of the previous two tracks.

I could go on about each track, like the workmanlike, catchy march of “Noctis Era” or the high-octane instrumental “Dub-Sag-Ta-Ke” which should have been the song playing during the scene in Xerxes’ tent in the movie 300, or the killer closing couple of minutes of “Fire Death and Fear” or Nemtheamga’s (Primordial) guest vocal appearance on the “Thou Art Lord” and blistering penultimate track “Santa Muerte”. However, I probably would not mention the cover of Diamanda Galas’ “Order of the Dead,” featuring Ms Galas herself.

Much like the recently discovered (for me) Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ are an influential and evolving Greek metal act I missed and need to further investigate. If Aealo is any indication,  I’m missing out on 4 or 5 mighty fine albums from the last decade.

I can't believe I overlooked this the first time around. This rocks my socks off. It's folky and epic without all the cheese.

2010 is almost at its end. In a year of very strong releases, this is still one of my favourites.

Almost two months since, and it STILL won't leave my CD player. Nemtheanga sounds fucking epic on "Thou Art Lord", and I appreciate Ms. Galas on here. Such a great album. Two in a row!

What you don't like the Balkan Etno, it's damn epic. I was hoping a Bulgarian band would do something like this but no one is really trying. I got to thank Rotting Christ for getting more exposure for Balkan Etno music. Too bad they didn't incorporate more old school Balkan instruments into the album.

Solid release, I am digging it a lot. I agree the female vocals are irritating though~

big rotting christ fan, i am wearing their shirt right now. Aealo is not as good as Theogonia. Theogonia was then again very very very good.

I only got Thy Mighty Contract ages ago and for some reason ignored the band ever since (not that I didn't like it, at all *shrugs*). Looks like I should get this one, at least. Btw, dude, that would be peplos for the greek maidens... togas were worn by Roman citizens, and for the biggest part by males exclusively.

Theogonia was much better, imo... all of the cool epic riffs on here were done before and better on that album, without the crappy female vox for the most part. To me this just sounded like Theogonia Part II worse.

Well ahem... Im a huge fan of rotting christ... Ive always been worshipping them, from their raw black metal period to their "goth" period ( chronos and a dead poem were awesome to me while being despised by the elite) Well, I must admit I'm kind of puzzled by this release... I can hear the music is awesome, overwhelming in fact... but Im not sure with the vocals... And Sakis has always been a legend to me... Dilu32 seems to have a problem with the vocals too... Sakis definitely changed his delivery on that one, and sometimes, I feel hes trying too hard to follow a rhytmic pattern sticking for the entirety of the song... Sounds weird I know but that how I hear it!!

Eric, yes do what Gordeth said but also Chronos and Thegonia are excellent as well if you don't like the TOTLL and Dead Poem stuff so well. Great, great band and great review as always. This is a must have for me.

Erik, get Thy Mighty Contract asap. By the way, Diamanda Galas didn't actually record new vocals for them. They just used her vocals from the original recording of that song.

i have three questions for you, mister erik thomas 1. what is your opinion about sakis' vocal performance because he claims that this is the best delivery he has ever done??? 2. aealo is considered a follow-up to theogonia. in that respect is aealo better than it's predecessor(theogonia has indeed received only a 7.6 mark but it was doug moore's opinion)??? 3. how high would you place aealo in rotting christ's back catalog???

Yeah, I really liked Theodonia, but like ex-inferis, the tribal/female/strange vocals really rub me the wrong way.
