Album Review

Score 3.3

Somewhat shockingly, Mnemic have made it to album number four. Not quite as shockingly, Sons of the System is just as shitty as their previous three. Like cockroaches, the band is as resilient as they are revolting, and as a result, we're reviewing yet another Mnemic album in 2010: this one littered with song titles like "Diesel Uterus" and "March of the Tripods" and crammed with leftover mallcore riffs that boast all the sparkle and sheen of Coal Chamber's tour bus floor. Their gimmick should have had run its course by now, but their self-styled status as "one of Metallica's favorite bands" (a fact they certainly aren't shy about ramming down your throat) has given their career some serious legs. So, if you were running low on reasons to be pissed at Metallica after Death Magnetic, there's some ammo. Fire at will.

For the uninitiated, Mnemic are unabashed ripoff artists, and they usually reach for comically inappropriate source material. When they're fleecing Fear Factory, they're culling from Digimortal. When they're stealing from Soilwork, it's Stabbing the Drama. They're like little kids tracing outlines of Hi and Lois, then begging for gold stars with pleas and cries, "Look! Look what we did! It's special!"

And it’s quite tragic, because they really think they're doing something special, but their self-proclaimed Future Fusion Metal sounds more like the friction produced from a dispassionate foreskin docking between Sevendust and Sybreed than anything vital or unique. It's industrial metal in only the loosest sense, as their electronic embellishments are more fey and flighty than cold and crushing. Perhaps sensing this glaring lack of sonic weight, Mnemic have taken a low-flying, pseudo-prog angle on Sons of the System, morphing into a lite-rock Scar Symmetry. Translation? Hollow hooks are crammed into any crevice they'll fit. Admittedly, Guillaume Bideau's clean vocals are the band's only strength, and Mnemic have made a shrewd move by showcasing them. To make his flaccid nu-bark the crux of their pillow-fisted attack would be disastrous. Much like everything else about Sons of the System.

Faults are numerous and frequent, but allow me a microcosm for the greater atrocity: The opening of "Climbing Towards Stars." This laughable (seriously, I actually laughed involuntarily, and quite heartily) detuned groove "riff" would've sounded stale back when chain wallets were fashionable. (For being the purported purveyors of 'Future Fusion Metal,' they certainly take a lot of cues from stale-ass, jumpdafuckup days gone by.) Ironically, this is the most memorable part of the album, but for all the wrong reasons. The first half of Sons of the System is a jagged, scotch-taped collection of ill-fitting ideas, while the second half devolves into a migraining morass of blunt redundancy with "Hero(In)" and "Elongated Sporadic Bursts."

Instead of spouting more mean-spirited, self-serving rhetoric, I’ll just lay it out: Unless Six Feet Under pulls another covers album out of their asses this year, this will go down as the worst high-profile album of 2010. If you like real heavy metal, you’ll hate this album. Don’t listen to it. Not even once. Want some crushing, complex rhythms? Listen to Meshuggah. Want soaring, catchy melodeath? Listen to Disarmonia Mundi. Want intense industrial metal? Listen to the new Fear Factory, which annihilates this fetid scrotum of a record in every fucking aspect. Sons of the System is just another shit-flavored jambalaya of other people's ideas, and somehow, with fistfuls of coattails, Mnemic keeps plugging along. It’s time to pull the plug.

I can't believe anyone would not only defend this shitheap of a record, but call it MELODIC. Thats just hilarious. It sounds like Slipknot mixed with the worst output of later-era In Flames. Some shoddy keyboards of a monotone detuned riff I could have done when I was 12? Melodic? Thats just sad man.

Possibly the greatest review I've read in the last few months and it's about an album of this caliber? I didn't see that coming at all dude, major props for that. And on another note, even though Metallica may be deserving of being in everyone's waste bin these last two decades, they did put on one hell of a show last thanksgiving (Oct. 11 here in Canada). I feel that's worth mentioning and giving props to where props due. Cheers

I'm a soilwork fanboy, so I'm probably going to like it. Why listen to Mnemic when Fear Factory just put out a butthole-popping good album?

If you're bored, Trez, you should listen to some Mnemic. They are sooooooo good. It's like they have a direct line to the very heart of awesomeness.

Also, a quick glance at our Top 25 of 2009 should quell any myths about our aversion to "melody." But there's really no reason to sit here and defend our content to a single malcontent that's obviously shitcanned on fanboy firewater. Other than to pound home his wrongheadedness, that is...

Just for the record: http://metalreview.com/Reviews/5261/Megadeth-Endgame.aspx That link will take anyone who's interested to not one, but two unanimously positive reviews of a well-known, melodic metal band.

This album is dildos. Wonder if Metallica will sue them for making a pentagram version of their Chinese star. I'm going back to Drudkh, a band with a REAL sense of melody, not just processed singing which changes notes once or twice.

The new Ihsahn got a 9.3, Hawker. It's melodic and he's popular. You lose.

You're a condescending fool. Well known and melodic doesn't equal good. There are plenty of examples of prominent bands that have gotten very positive reviews. You just won't acknowledge that because you've got your panties in a twist about Mnemic, of all bands. No wonder you don't agree w/ what we do. If Mnemic is an example of how "the music keeps getting better", we're all doomed.

My God, Metalheads sure ain't what they used to be. The music keeps getting better but the fans become more and more a bunch of bandwagon jumping sheep. Just read all the comments. This reviewer, and your narrow minded Metalhead mates told you to hate it, so you do. Think for yourselves. BTW, I just checked a few well known melodic bands' reviews. All had low scores, middling at absolute best. What a surprise....

You make the gross assumption that we don't have "broad tastes in metal" because we think Mnemic blows ass. This is erroneous. If you have read this website for 3-4 years, you'd know this. You're pissed about a Mnemic review. The other comments ("You would do well to open your eyes, ears and mind as well") are not only out-of-place and off-topic, but oddly condescending. Practice what you preach. This album is fucking terrible, and if you even think it's on the better side of mediocre, you're taste is highly questionable.

Mnemic are crap. And I'll bet I'm older than you are. If you've read this site for 3-4 years you wouldn't spout all that 'anti-melody' nonsense. This site isn't guilty of that in the least. All the same, I couldn't be any less interested in what Dave Lombardo thinks the problem is with internet reviewers or the metal scene. I'm not sure he knows that much about it anymore.

Hey 'Eminor', I'll tell you what a 'fanboy' I am. I was probably listening to Metal albums when you were itching your Daddy's pants. I've reviewed Rock and Metal albums myself for the last decade, and have read this website for 3-4 years. Some reviews I agree with, some I don't, like anyone. But this utter nonsense couldn't pass without comment. It's way too easy to sit on your high horse and slag the living shit out of someone's hard work for a thousand words without finding SOMETHING redeeming about it. Mnemic are an excellent band, melodic, excellent musicians and very well produced. But then, I actually have BROAD tastes in Metal, from the melodic to the brutal, and just about everything in between. It all has it's place, and something enjoyable can be found in just about anything. You would do well to open your eyes, ears and mind as well...

This website is SUCH a cliche. Dave Lombardo summed it up recently in an interview. He said 'There is a fear in the Metal scene right now, a fear of melody'. He is so right. I know when I come on websites such as this if you're reviewing a well known band with a penchant for melody it's going to be a bad review. And sure enough, there it is. SO SO predictable. And of course the only melodic band you praise is one so obscure you'd be lucky if 4 or 5 people have heard of them. But of course, if you 'namedrop' an obscure band it still serves your 'credibility' (and I say that with tongue planted firmly in cheek). Why don't you actually go out on a limb? Do something different? Find something GOOD in a melodic band. It's devastatingly bad writing to simply slag something for 5 endless paragraphs. You summed it up yourself: 'mean spirited, self-serving rhetoric'. Most accurate thing in the entire review.

This album sucks so terribly bad it's not even funny. It's a shame that a band like this gets such a big push from labels and fans with no clue, while so many more worthy bands are left to feed on scraps of what crappy bands like this leave behind. Awful.

You know where bands will have a sticker on the CD with a bunch of quotes from Terrorizer or Kerrang et al? I'd love to see the following sticker on this CD: "If you like real heavy metal, you’ll hate this album. Don’t listen to it. Not even once" - Metalreview.com "shit-flavored jambalaya" - is surely a righteous useage of the English language! What a great review Rev.
