Album Review

Like many of you reading this, I am a guitar player. A rather poor guitar player, but a six-stringer nonetheless. Because of this, I listen to metal not just as a fan of music, but also as a musician myself. Certain bands therefore just urge me to pick up my axe and riff away no matter how trashy it sounds to the tenants upstairs. From Coroner and Morbid Angel to High on Fire and The Crown, some bands make me drop whatever I’m doing just to crank the amp and beat the shit out of the ol’ Les Paul.

Another one of those bands? Arghoslent.

The term “The Almighty Riff” applies to every goddamned second of this, their classic Incorrigible Bigotry (getting a well-deserved reissue, undoubtedly to boost availability). You can literally feel the bridge of the guitar under your pick hand, feel that pick hitting and chugging away on those low strings for rhythm passages, and feel the awkward way that the off-kilter riffs and lead work make your fret hand dance around. You don’t air guitar to this shit, you air riff. It’s guitar metal for guitar metal fans, but it just so happens that Arghoslent also brought along a top notch (and extremely involved) rhythm section and the songwriting chops of legend.

Arghoslent forgo the brutality and shred-fest technicality of most modern death metal, instead painting their picture with a palette of blues-based, extremely melodic, and incomparably addictive riffs that bleed both classic metal and classic rock. The result is an album stockpiled with instant classics that somehow stay fresh and nuanced well into the album’s 20th spin. The band stretches the bounds of this framework to offer a surprising amount of musical variety throughout Incorrigible Bigotry. “Flogging the Cargo” kicks things off in a blast-laden, speedy and infectious manner, only to be followed by the epic and emotional “The Purging Fires of War.” The latter reaches an intense finale after an extended mid-section effectively trades off brooding chord melodies and a more punctuated guitar-drum tandem. “Heirs to Perdition” also has this impeccable flow and attention to songcraft, not to mention the most whacky, bouncy, and downright toe-tapping section of the entire album. They even find time to throw in some touches of prog and thrash in places as well, the key to success being that the blend is always subtle, perfectly hidden within each of these expertly crafted gems.

The blood icing on this death metal cake is the eight and a half minute instrumental title track. “Incorrigible Bigotry” is true instrumental metal, obviously written for this format, with no need or even opportunity for vocals to be included. Throughout the song, it is easy to see just how much of a complete unit Arghoslent are on Incorrigible Bigotry. Drums, bass, and guitar all have an intricate role in shaping each of the song’s many sections, playing so naturally together that at times they appear to be improvising. It is a masterful blend of both showmanship and compositional talent, and the most amp-enticing morsel on an album chock full of them.

An organic and natural production ensures that the album comes through clearly and also musically appropriate, sounding old school yet extremely professional. In addition, the reissue comes with the bonus track “Mob of the Hollowing,” originally featured only on the vinyl version. It finds the band in more old-school death metal terrain, complete with plodding, almost simplistic riffs at times. But fear not, it still has plenty of that insane and unique Arghoslent sense of melody.

What? Expecting 1,000 words discussing the questionable nature of Arghoslent’s lyrical subject matter? Fuck that. Incorrigible Bigotry deserves your attention because of the music, and potential fans thusly deserve to be first enticed by the quality of said music. If the band really wanted you to pay attention to their lyrics, they’d play some style where you could not only understand them better but also weren’t distracted by mindfuckingly phenomenal death metal.

So put on your patch-covered denim jacket, dust off that Marshall stack and get out your Warlock, because it really doesn’t get much better than this folks.

it's funny how the reviewer (and most of the comments defending arghoslent) rely on the "it's all about the music" argument, when in fact they're the ones who apparently let their political views take influence on their music taste. how else can you explain two 10/10 ratings on this site and that incredible amount of high praise for this band? don't get me wrong, i don't think their music is bad. but it isn't THAT good either. so the only reason for rating this band that high, is if you actually agree with their views or think it's incredibly extreme (and therefore incredibly metal) to piss off people by being racist. in either case, it's douchebaggery that leads people to rate arghoslent 10/10, not their fine musicianship.

I just read some of the lyrics of this band and am saddened to think that one of my favourite websites would actively endorse such hatred. I am all for freedom of speech but hatred of humans for their race should not be praised. I almost bought this Cd upon the recommendation of this site. I could not live with myself if I had as I would have actively supported a group of anti Jew and anti black skinheads. I hope no one else makes this mistake. Racism needs to be abolished. I am making a plea to this website to remove all reviews of this band and especially remove this album from your top albums of the decade. I cannot deny the quality of the musicianship but I also cannot deny that Hitler was an incredible public speaker. If you have any respect for your fellow man do not but this album or support any artist who spreads racial hatred

Whoa, I've been listening to Arghoslent for about a year now and just found out they're racist.I play guitar, so I really appreciate the musicianship on this album, the production sounds natural, not to mention I like the vocalist's growls and how it sounds like he's giving it his all, but I'm half black! Don't you fuckers say it's obvious in the CD's name "Incorrigible Bigotry," because that can be applied to any ideology a bigot adheres to. Fuck this band for making me an ironoclast(yes I made that word up)--the naive half black guy that bought an Arghoslent album from iTunes. I want a damn refund.

@compeller and everyone else who gives a shit about anything - metal has never been about this one thing or that, liberal or fascist or whatever. each band is a reflection of the dudes involved. suffocation has had terrence and mike since before death metal was much of anything, and i doubt those OG's of death metal had a political perspective that was right-leaning. regardless, it's disappointing to me to have a band as talented as arghoslent (talented but certainly not fucking groundbreaking like so many of you below are saying) espousing intellectually bankrupt ideologies and historical perspectives masqueraded as 'intelligent' racism. some of the 'smartest' guys of the 19th century thought the latitude on earth at which you lived determined the evolutionary stage of a specific race of people (thus it was decided that peoples further from the equator to the north with their harsh winters somehow became more advanced physiologically and mentally than people closer to the equator (africans and most of the rest of the world); anyone with a middle school education has learned enough about evolution and natural selection to know thats bullshit, and thats basically what arghoslent spends their time singing about. its fucking metal. sing about death and apocalypse and indiscriminate murder. like i mentioned above, some black dudes helped invent the general structure of those pretty sweet arghoslent riffs. suck my dick you mom's-basement-dwelling suburban troglodytes.

Jajajajajaja! Maybe in my time away I've become an elitist but this is just above average melodic death metal. 7/10. No one would care about this band so much if not for the slight racist content. And what's up with everyone crying about racism? When was metal about being liberal? Oh wait...ok so when was EXTREME metal about being liberal? Ok the last 6 or 7 years. That's not the point! I'm sure all you wiggers whining about this would love this band. It's like all the wiggery death metal you already love, but a little better. I can see a bunch of straight hat faggots headbanging to this. Maybe they won't love it as much as Decapitated but hey, praise Jesus. My heart lies with the second tier bands too but I still enjoy a lot of MA's stuff. There are a lot worse bands getting way more attention than they are. Maiden: "Readers are apparently uneducated and must be told everything." I know you're exaggerating - but seriously, don't people read reviews to be told things about the band? Sure, Zach chose to only focus on the music, and that's his perogative and that's fine... Also, Reason brings up some very good points. Racism is indeed different from religion bashing. Arghoslent are entitled to their opinion just like anyone else is, and should not be censored. And anyone who won't buy their material because they are racist fuckheads are equally entitled to their opinions too. It doesn't deserve a 10 though. Yeah, it's catchy death metal, and it's good, but nowhere near flawless. Maybe some people exalt something when it's a guily pleasure...?

These guys don't truly offend ME (I'm white after all), but they do offend my sensibilities, being idiots that use their music as a vehicle to spew their idiocy, OR that use their idiocy (whether genuine or not) as a vehicle to promote their admittedly pretty rippin music, all while trying so hard to not sound like idiots. And to those that keep foolishly trying to draw similarities to subjects such as anti-christendom and "murdering and raping babies," the issue is that those types of things are either equal opportunity, so to speak, as in murdering PEOPLE, not a certain race of people, and in the case of singling out religious groups, the hate is directed towards an idea/belief and the people who CHOOSE to adhere to it. It all falls under the realm of the extreme, but hating a group of people because of their biological make up is also extremely stupid. Even if you were of the belief that black people were biologically inferior, would you have a real reason to hate them? I wouldn't mind if the government extended equal rights to my dog. Know what I'm saying. Anyhoo... haven't actually listened to this yet, but I did steal it already (it did get a 10).

I think its really..interesting that in a genre full of lyrics about murdering and raping babies and burning christians and zombie carnage..a few racist remarks gets people in an uproar.

I don't like this band, but you can't hate on Zach for not going in-depth about their personal beliefs. THE NAME OF THE FUCKING CD is Incorrigible Bigotry. What else does he need to warn anyone about? I'm 1/2 Jewish and am not offended by this band being here. In fact, I'm proud of Metalreview.com for reviewing it. I don't think the band is worth a shit but that's beside the point. Stop whining.

There music is catchy, but not a 10. Racist lyrics are dumb, as are most metal lyrics. The interview is really interesting - but they are really trying too hard to sound intelligent and profound.

Most lyrics period are nonsense, but there are metal bands with great lyrics. You can't honestly believe that generalizing like that is accurate. Anyway, great review, Zach. Long live the almighty riff.

I don't like their lyrics but I appreciate their art. And this is bad ass album that deserves the high marks and praise. I don't like anti christian lyrics either but then again all metal lyrics are nonsense. Am I right?

I thought that was a great interview as well. This is a good quote: "H: No. Arghoslent thinks and writes in terms of riffs, so if people like the riffs, it makes sense. Arghoslent is not a political party. It's a few guys writing riffs."

A 10? Seriously? This shit's as saccharin sweet as Dragonforce and about as good. There has been maybe three or four good melodic death metal bands and Arghoslent sure as hell ain't one of 'em. I feel disingenuous even calling this shit death metal.

You want great death metal, go to Suffocation. Oh, and by the way, you'll get two of the most influential musicians in extreme metal, Terrence Hobbs and Mike Smith. Ain't that funny (do I have to mention that they're black). I'm against censorship, so allow me to say this: a "white power" death metal band is the dumbest shit on the face of the earth, next to NSBM. Go play in motherf'n' Montana with Toby Keith as headliner...

Devin - If you were active in our forum as most that last on here are you would know it has been done to death. I seriously doubt there is a metal fan over the age over 16 that doesn't know about Arghoslent and their lyrics. I think it takes more balls to review every band then it does to take some tired, cliche, higher moral ground. Metal and especially extreme metal is supposed to be offensive and hard to swallow at times, not safe.

"What? Expecting 1,000 words discussing the questionable nature of Arghoslent’s lyrical subject matter? Fuck that." I would say that's a mention. He and the site's editor are both assuming (as well they should, based on your lash) that everyone already knows what Arghoslent is on about. The album is called "Incorrigible Bigotry" for a reason. They aren't trying to hide it.

lee -- I'm appalled mostly because neither this reviewer nor the site's editor chose to even mention the nature of the lyrical content. It's irresponsible at best, and enabling at worst. Call it the best album in the history of death metal if you want (it's not even close), but be sure to let the readers know what they're getting into before they fork their money over to these imbeciles.

That is why I like IB so much better, has more traditional metal involved in it. Remember how much AE started sucking when they dropped the leads? Same thing from IB to Hornets. I can see where if you like more trad Death Metal you might prefer Hornets. This is just an incrediable Heavy Metal album. They could sing about smurfs fucking for all I care.

This album destroys Hornets. Devin, get over yourself. Are you honestly "appalled"? If you have the choice to be "appalled" over it why can't others have the choice to ignore the lyrics (which are not like you described anyways) and enjoy on of the best metal albums ever? Yeah, it is that good.

Jesus fucking christ... I am absolutely appalled that metalreview allowed ANOTHER Arghoslent review to be published. You might as well just throw up an essay on why white people are superior to the rest of the world in every way and start selling commemorative swastika armbands. To anyone with a conscience reading this bullshit review -- Arghoslent are a white power band and their lyrics fit that motif. Don't give them a dime of your money if you don't want to support their ideology. If you really want to enjoy their music -- essentially a bunch of remedial DM riffs that, ironically enough, are based on the blues -- as this reviewer suggests, then steal this shit with a vengeance. Otherwise, fuck this band and their backwoods redneck klan mentality. And fuck Zach Duvall for giving these idiots more attention than they deserve.
