If a band’s success was based solely on how well they execute the mission statement on their Myspace page, Fleshred would be an instant sensation. Admittedly not out to do anything new, the goal of these Finns is to play old school death metal somewhere between the Floridian and Stockholm styles. And since they are pretty goddamned good at it, they deserve some buzz for this fine little demo, Halls of Tormented Flesh.

From the moment “Clad in Terror” explodes out of the gate, it’s quite evident that Fleshred mean fuckin’ business. Halls is a constant flurry of blasts, speedy guitars, excellent death metal vocals (part guttural, part screamed), some well-executed solo sections, and even the occasional brutal groove. All three of the songs contained here are of an equally high quality, showing excellent promise for a full length. Add in a venomous production (please don’t change it for the full length, really), and it adds up to one of the better mini-debuts I’ve heard in a long while.

Looking for something fresh and groundbreaking? Too bad bitches. Not Fleshred’s game, but those who live by the style will welcome the band with open arms. At only about 12 minutes, Halls is over before you know who swung the ball peen hammer, but it demands repeated listens. Fleshred is revivalist without relying on the gimmick. Bring on the full length, I’ll gladly take 40 minutes of this.
