I just assume most of the people who populate a site called "Metal Review" have some passing experience with Morbid Angel. I would think everyone has heard a few of their records and is familiar with the band's style and social leanings. If not, I wouldn't know where to begin to get you caught up. Theirs was the first "death metal" record I ever purchased - Altars of Madness, and they more or less helped define what I consider Death Metal to be. Between them, Bolt Thrower, Carcass and Godflesh my attitude about heavy music was forever twisted. Heretic is the "H" album - the band seems to like to come up with album titles alphabetically for some reason, and it finds the band reverting to three piece format and opting once again for a flatter production style. It reminds me quite a bit of the sound they had during the Covenant/Domination years. This is not a particularly positive thing in my opinion. The drums sound like plastic toys, and there is almost no sign of the bass in the mix. Granted it's a little nitpicky, but I like my metal heavier than this. The compositions are hit or miss as well, Track one comes out of the gates with a flurry of action that ends up being rather forgetful, sort of setting the tone for the record. The next couple are very good slower tempoed (as such) songs, memorable and punishing, but never attaining the same levels as "Suffocation" or "Blessed Are the Sick", or even later day greats such as "Secured Limitations". There are a couple of "soundscape" breaks, one of which is actual song length, but they don't really add much to the mood of the record. They are also back to back, which is obnoxious. When used to break up the songs one at a time these are always kind of cool, but placed together they are just tedious. The musicianship of a Morbid Angel record is nearly always beyond criticism, regardless of the methods of recording the performances. Azagthoth is at his usual cerebrally decadant best, throwing suprising melodies where you wouldn't be looking for them, and then poking your attention with echoed out noise solos strewn with just enough virtuosity to keep it from being simple chaotic wankery. Pete Sandoval (Pedro?) is still a monster behind the kit, tossing around changeup tempos and blast beats that shouldn't fit but always do when listened to in the context of the songs as a whole. Steve Tucker's voice is abrassive, and shouty, incomprehensible and expected. I wish to hell I could tell you how his bass playing sounds, but he might as well not have bothered. It's all lost in thr mix. Trey and Pedro/Pete get an amusing chance to show you their dicks at the end of the disc with a couple of "soundcheck solos". Yeah, it's over the top and completely egotistical, but they can fucking play! Bottom line: longtime fans will be happy to know that Morbid Angel are still twisting the threads of what you expect from death metal, and either happy or dissapointed to know that they are going back to a rawer, flatter sound. Anyone not already a fan could probably find better examples of the MA style to get aquainted with, but this is at the very least a decent record with excellent performances. I will be listening to it again.

This and gateways are in my opinion he worst morbid angel albums. While Heretic is total crap (production and compositions), gateways is boring. Their records with David are masterpiece and the same is Formulas which is tottaly chaotic and for that reason you need to hear it a lot of times in order for it to be absorbed.

I didnt care for Gateways. Drums were waaaay too triggered, and there werent to many blast beats on the album. I didnt mind the production of Heretic too much. No, I cant hear the bass, but at least it wasnt horribly over-produced like Gateways and Domination. Some songs are good, while others, like God of our Own Divinity seem 2nd rate Morbid Angel rip-offs (god of our own divinty = ceaser's palace, which isnt that amazing anyway). I dont mind the album, but theres way too much filler.

As disappointed as I was in this album, I can't wait to hear what they do next. I just don't see them down for long, especially with David Vincent back in the fold. Please have some good production next time, Trey. Please!

I agree. The only mandatory Morbid Angel albums in my opinion are Altars, Blessed, and Covenant. They really went downhill after that.

In my opinion, Morbid got really boring after Covenant, with the worse being Formulas. This is okay, but why buy it when I'd rather listen to Blessed anyway? This is a case of a band not being able to switch up their "trademark" sound enough to keep them interesting over the course of 8 albums.

They seem to be losing whatever cohesion they used to have. Some songs sound like a few melodic ideas thrown together long enough to make a 3-minute-plus song. There are not many good ideas in terms of structure, the lyrics are a lame attempt to achieve the depth David Vincent was able to. As for the drum sound, it sucks. I hate triggers, nothing sounds as cool as real drums through microphones. If triggers are easier to work with in a live show situation it's ok, but microphones can work miracles in a good studio, with a good sound engineer piloting the mixing desk (something I'm sure these fellas can afford). I saw these guys live twice, one was last year, and it was pretty cool. The first time was in 1991, and man, that was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I'm really sorry it will never happen again...

I definitely have to agree with the complaints about the production and track organization. After I bought this cd and heard the piss poor production and the way they organized the songs, I ripped the songs into my computer and loaded them into my recording software and fucked around with the mix and was able to get it sounding a lot more ballsy. Then i burned the tracks back to disc in a different order to give the album had a better flow and mix up the songs with the instrumentals/soudscapes. it's a little more enjoyable for me to listen to now.

I love MA but was completely bored with this album. And I was so looking forward to it. There was nothing new here at all. I'm not denying their musicianship or whatever. The soundscape tracks were friggin pointless. I'm not saying they don't work. I loved Formulas (even though a lot of people didn't, can't figure out why). Most of the soundscapes on that album were cool, and were placed in the right spots. But on heretic, they did nothing for me. MA have never really had the best production in the world, but I really thought they had enough money now to come up with a better sounding album, especially since their buddy Erik Rutan is one bad ass producer (have you heard the new Cannibal Corpse album?) The production in the past has sort of been the same way, but for some reason it worked then. It just sounds so generic here. I think the trick is to somehow keep their old sound, but put a little more punch and bottom end to it. It can be done. When I listen to Hate Eternal's I Monarch, or Behemoth's Demigod, or even Vile's New Age of Chaos, I think, "Damn, what if Morbid Angel's next album sounds like this." It'll fuckin destroy! The thing that frustrates me the most is the drum sound on the drum solo is awesome! WHY DON'T THEY SOUND THAT WAY ON THE WHOLE ALBUM?! When I bought this, I went to the drum check first because I was so excited about it. I was like hell yeah this album's gonna kill. So, then I skip back to track one. What a huge disappointment. I'm still gonna stick with 'em, but the next album's gotta be a hell of a lot more interesting than this. So, cut down on the soundscapes (or do away with them all together), get Rutan to produce it, and but a little more fire and brutality into it. They have to do this to regain the crown.

Can never deny the greatness of Morbid Angel. As with FFTTF, though, I am also baffled by the back-to-back 'instrumentals'. Definately takes away from kicking back and enjoying a record, for me at least. Regardless, MA are lords of death metal.

Picked this up the other day for no other reason than the fact that I saw it on the shelf. I've always enjoyed Morbid Angel, but for some reason, I haven't gotten around to getting any of their albums yet...my mistake. So the production on this is horendous, but that's something I can deal with. I suspect these are triggered drums, as well, which is completely baffling to me; if you were picky enough about your tone to opt for triggered drumming then what the hell is up with the production?!!! But even that I can tolerate if the album is good, and this is definatle quality material. The riffs are extremely well written, and the level of proficiency is excellent. Groove doesn't fall by the wayside, but it's definately not the main focus, which is good. I only have three major complaints. The first is the verse/chorus formula is heavily applied, and secondly the order of the songs makes listening to the record without skipping tracks impossible. They even included a bonus disc which makes me angry, because it leaves absolutely no reason why the drum and guitar check should have even been on the main album, much less the last tracks! The layout of this album makes no fucking sense, whatsoever. Even the well written instrumentals are poorly placed. The last thing that bugged me was how seiously they're taking themselves here. Making a statement is fine, but quoting Deepak Chopra in a two page intro to your lyric booklet is just too much. Still, when I'm listening to the real songs it makes no differance, because despite all it's flaws, the material here is ver high quality death metal.

Heretic is great, the production is obviously made to sound dirty which is the way it should be, sometimes polished production can sound to slick and take away the impact,Heretic rules its that simple.

hate to jump on the fucking wagon here, but this production is bad. Shallow as hell, doesn't allow for any clarity in the low end. too bad they abandoned the Gateways production, that was good stuff. Enshrined By Grace is a decent song but they are treading water with Heretic. I'm thinking that the recent addition of david vincent will herald another death metal classic...i hope.

I think Heretic has some killer stuff on it! 1-3 and 6 are awesome and 9+10 are cool. Drum Check is the dog's BOLLOCKS! Fucking incredible! My only gripes would be the order of the tracks, which I don't think works to maximum advantage...and kind of fucks with my head anyway. My cd has 44 tracks on it, 28 of which are silent. I am quite a big fan of their newer albums FFTTF being my fave, and I thinks it's a cool addition to their discog! All in all I think it's fairly damn cool!

If there were fewer soundscapes and solos I doubt there would be any more actual songs. I would imagine, if I were an imagining fellow, that the extra shit is just that: shitr thrown in to amuse the band and the fans. The two soundscapes mayb have been well thought out, but they always put that crap in anymore.

i loved GTA but thought the triggered drums was the only downfall, but this time round my only gripe is the guitar sound. I dunno what they're thinking. I dunno what they were thinking adding the 'Secure Limitations' solo in with some crappy moody instrumentals. the instrumentals just sorta killed it. And i didnt like the start of the disc, i was expecting a wacky intro. anyway, i expect i;ll dig it more once i listen to it more.

This album is solid about 1/2 threw and then it's just filler...Lots uv keyboard "songs" like MA likes to do, a drum solo, and a pure guitar track from a song off of Gatewheys...That's not fresh material and it's a very weak way to end a NEW album. Thumbs fucking DOWN.
