Quite honestly, it's tough to swallow another helping of technical death metal at this point. Everything from the band name (come on, guys), the computer-generated cover art, and the maddingly derivative opening riff just screams, "enough already!" Unavoidably, the over-saturation of this subgenre has greatly detracted from the impact of Cosmogenesis' detonation. If this had been released 3 years ago, the tech-nerd Ewoks would be raising Obscura to C3PO-like status.

While the prog/tech/whathaveyou universe is quite crowded, and the "death metal in outer space" thing is oddly rampant right now, Obscura does stand out by virtue of the class with which they ply their trade. Too often, bands of this ilk are too self-absorbed to consider their tactics adequately, and fail to ride the ebb-and-flow that Obscura seems to have a pulse on. Similar to the way Lars Ulrich wondered aloud, "why pummel someone for 5 minutes when you could do it for 8?" during the St. Anger sessions, the current crop of tech-death mofos would rather overwhelm the listener with firestorms of facefucking fret-fragments than build something truly tangible. Most will dismiss a St. Anger reference as rash, but let's be honest: most of this stuff is rocking a shelf-life similar to that infamous trashcan tour-de-flop.

Bottom line: the duality of jaw-dropping musicianship and memorable, impactful songwriting hasn't been truly harnessed of late. With hope, this was to be the disc that finally laid waste to the faceless posturers that are merely emulating those who shreddeth before them. And while Cosmogenesis briefly flashes potential to be the most aurally-orgasmic death metal album in recent memory, repeated spins quickly tarnish its sheen, and the band's own emulation becomes more glaring with each rotation.

It takes a while for this album to get cooking. While the dexerity and fluidity of the band is on full display from the get-go, the first three tracks have few highlights beyond some beautiful bass work and extended guitar soloing. "Incarnated" however, breaks up the prog-pork parade and drops the fucking hammer. Seething for the first time, Obscura get all Symbolic meets Focus on our asses, gnashing and tearing with pointed melody and explosive riffing. Segueing into the obligatory "happy" intrumental, "Orbital Elements," Obscura push the Cynical envelope even further. Unfortunately, they bring that band's highbrow haughtiness along for the ride as well; but at least they wear it well. "Noospheres" is another highlight, notable for being one of the only times on record that a vocoder has sounded cool.

But after the all cosmic dust has settled, all the holy-fucking-shits have been muttered, all the dude-that-was-awesomes have been exclaimed...a hyper-derivative wankfest is all that remains. Sure, the musicianship is stellar, but Obscura isn't bringing any ideas to the table that will distract from the fact that they're kinda late to the party. Also, their take on 'progressive death metal' leans pretty heavily to the 'prog' end of the spectrum - vitriol is in short supply. Simply put, there's not enough nastiness on here to make Diminishing Between Worlds fade to black quite yet, and despite a spirited effort, it's hard to imagine Cosmogenesis having the longevity that their forebears have enjoyed.

If you can't get enough of this stuff, by all means, saddle up - but the golden calf this is not.

I've been playing drums, guitar, and bass in metal for over a decade. I've listened to Obscura's Cosmogenesis 50+ times start to finish, and it has single handily rejuvenated my love for extreme metal. One of the very best extreme metal albums to come out in a long time.

personally i think the death metals tags are a bit of a stretch, this is killer tech metal... awesome solos, song structures and the like... personally i think this album review is a bit harsh... oh and the fretless bass, sound ssooooo cool.... yeah fretless!

One of the solos in Incarnated has parts in it that are total fucking ripoffs of (tributes to?) Paul's solo in Cynic's Veil of Maya.

Wow!!! How insightful, gallbladder! If any of you were considering sleeping with the members of Obscura, you might want to reconsider because this guy says they have AIDS!!! I think it is a pretty cool proggy death album.

Kenny and Chud both make excellent points. Being sick of a genre isn't enough to knock an album on songwriting if all of the other pieces of the equation add up to a '6'. This album is phenomenal -- easily one of the better Tech/Prog Death albums in recent memory.

You can hear some Death and Necro influence, but it's a great style of metal and they pull it off nicely. It has more intricate drum parts, not just straight blasting. There are a few blasts, but used more sparingly, which is more effective. Some nice "holy fuck" moments on the instrumental track as well.

100% agree with Chud, we don't want to hear about a reviewers dislike for an entire sub genre, especially when the album being reviewed is in that sub genre so we know the review is going to be biased. Take a look at the lashes below - seems as though there are still a lot of people who love well done tech death. So Jordan, do you only listen to the most obscure 'un-saturated' sub genres of metal? Of course not. I'm sure there are people who think the sub genres you listen to are equally saturated with crap, it's all a matter of taste - so if you have come to dislike the majority of tech death, why choose to review it...?

How come the obligatory "band history" section of reviews has been replaced with the obligatory "I'm sooooo sick of this genre" section. Leave the getting sick of genres to us, and just review the album please. Put that crap in a blog or "state of the metal" style essay where it belongs. Is it wierd that I more or less accept the scoring, but not the review?

Well, All Hope Is Gone is way better than this anyway. Cynic's Focus MIGHT be able to compete with that masterpiece. lol Joking aside you're right, who cares? There is some fiya metal to be had out there. Psycroptic, Bloodbath, and Origin's new albums are all beasts and on an unrelated note Buried Inside's new album sounds to be awesome as well. Can't say the same for Brain Drill...anyone remember those poor bastards? lol

I don't really compare Obscura to Cynic. What I mean is that there are some parts on Cosmogenesis which remind me of Cynic. As well as it doesn't interest me who technically kicks more ass. Few kids will say Slipknot knocks the socks of everything :) So who cares? Decrepit Birth's Diminishing Between Worlds, Cynic's Traced In Air, Gonin-Ish's Naishikyo-Sekai and Obscura's Cosmogenesis are all outstanding albums for me which can't be easily compared one with another. They all play on a different level.

I like this album and its swirling science-fiction death metal riffs- shit is fiya. Cynic is definitely better though...why would you compare Cynic to these guys? Their last album was so different..in a good way. I'd say Gonin-ish can be related more to Cynic than these guys. Amazing band

For me a comparison between Decrepit Birth and Obscura is like a comparison between Children Of Bodom and In Flames. DBW is faster and heavier, while there's Cynic shining through Cosmogenesis. They are maybe in the same genre but still two different types of shoes.

@ IntrepidPete and evilsonic: This is a progressive death metal album with tons of guitar solos. Diminishing Between Worlds is a progressive death metal album with tons of guitar solos. These are very niche records within a relatively small sub-genre of music, released within a year of each other. I fail to see why a comparison (or at the very least, a reference) is off-limits.

Sounds to me like a band that's great at wanking but is actually trying to write good stuff, which they're frankly just not that good at. Necrophagist(who is obviously comparable and has some history with) are great at wanking, and they dont' try to do anything else, as a result, they have a couple fantastic albums full of ridiculously wankful death metal. These guys should be doing that because they're not good song writers, they're great musicians, and that's it.

The evil atmosphere is for BM, the crushing heaviness is something for Doom Metal and the feral intensity for Brutal Death :) This is finally something between the calm Cynic and the sick Gorguts sound. For Tech-Death fans it's sure a must-have for others maybe worth a try. DBW is something totally different.

And yes, i dont really understand why u compare this album to DIMINISHING BETWEEN WORLDS. I like DBW very much too but...I cant put it in words, or even imagine, why its likely to be compared with each other at all, since its a very different pair of shoes.

You know a fukk. Nuff said. Mostly. Your review on the other hand is quite right... except:"a hyper-derivate wankfest" That is exactly what the band was trying to avoid since half of the band was under the thumb of Necrophagists mastmind when recording EPITAPH. I love and own the Epitaph album but this has so much more perspective towards tech-death. I dont judge it in beneath Epitah but at least in eye-reach(? sorry, i dont now better cuz Im german). Thanks for another superb album from talented musicians finally let loose.

It`s ( as I said before ) fucking awesome and will take some beating for my aoty. If this ain`t the golden calf than I sure as hell want to meet what is.

I have so many reservations with this album. I mean, I enjoyed the last Decrepit Birth, but lets face it, tech-death is not known for being very memorable. I barely listen to DB now. Can anyone say anything to assuage my fears? Because everything i've read so far just points to another meaningless fret-fuck session.

I couldn't like this album more if I found out it was performed by chocolate covered playmates. It's that good. Tastefully progressive, amazingly heavy, and well produced to boot. And what about those guitar solos? The 3 song sampler didn't properly prepare me for this album.

I love this album! Time to drop some names here. To me, this work of art is a combination of Decrepit Birth, Odious Mortem, Martyr, Cynic, Death, and parts Anata. There is groove, brutality, intricate guitar solos, and melody. Those of you who like to hear some bass, get ready. It's actually there for all to hear. The instrumental "Orbital Elements" is expertly placed and the album is never over-bearing. I can't recommend this enough for fans of technical/progressive metal!

Music is AMAZING but the vocals are generic as fuck and the worst thing is that sometimes he is doing the cynic-electronically processed vocals which is the weakest part in cynic's music. I hate those vocals.
