Album Review

It is at the risk of repeating myself that I state the following: if you had told me nine years ago that I would be here about to write a new Lamb of God album released on a major label, I would have laughed you out of town. Seriously. New American Gospel did nothing for me, and I heard it at a time when so many bands of the ilk – Killswitch Engage and God Forbid among them, as well as many long since forgotten others – were emerging that I felt this just had to be a trend. Well, look who’s the idiot now: those three bands are often credited with starting that whole “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” thing. Lamb of God ended up on Epic Records and served as main support for much of Metallica’s most recent US run, and I am quite the fan. Now they continue to prove their mettle with Wrath.

The question on all the fans’ minds seems to be “Will it be better than Sacrament?” At first it sounded like an odd sentiment. I gave a fairly positive review to that album back in 2006, but as I thought back on it, I realized that I had barely touched it since writing the review (then again, when you’re able to see a band live every three months, who needs to listen to an album?) Continuing on, I could only recall a handful of the tracks in detail, so maybe it wasn’t as good as I initially thought; it certainly didn’t have much longevity. When the new single “Set to Fail” was released, I was hopeful that Wrath would pack a more powerful punch, and when I finally heard the album in its entirety, there was no question that it does.

“A sacred cash cow / with sickly tits” – that opening line to “In Your Words” jumped right out at me, and the song as a whole reads like a scathing diatribe against the record industry, with the music to match. They probably could have shaved off the last minute or so at no great loss, although the funeral dirge feel does provide a nice bit of closure. “Set to Fail” itself has a bit of a classic thrash vibe to it, which either makes it a surprising choice for a first single or means that my interpretation of the word is becoming looser. At any rate, this is far from Active Rock material, and I just don’t see Randy Blythe’s lower-end growls appealing to a mainstream audience. Next up, “Contractor” cranks up the speed and heaviness to an almost surprising level. Unfortunately they also toss in a goofy chorus line with “Guaran-fucking-teed!” which quickly flashed me back to “This is a motherfucking invitation!” from Sacrament’s “Redneck.” Remember when Guns N’ Roses has the “Guns N’ Fuckin’ Roses” shirts, and Metallica followed with the “Metalli-fuckin-ca” design? Yeah, silly like that. Back to the song, though, it's killer.

You’d think a track titled “Fake Messiah” would fall right into Lamb of God’s power zone, but it’s actually pretty flat. Ironically, “Grace” fares a bit better with some nice tempo changes and sweet riff work from the duo of Mark Morton and Willie Adler. “Broken Hands” follows suit and gives drummer Chris Adler a chance to show off, too. I think he even tossed in a blast beat on “Dead Seeds,” which has the type of power groove that is bound to make it a live favorite, a la “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For,” but without the sing-along. I have nothing special to say about “Everything to Nothing” and “Choke Sermon,” but that doesn’t mean they aren’t solid. They’re just on par with the quality of the rest of the album. I would have closed with one of those tracks rather than the 7+ minute “Reclamation.” Its an ambitious undertaking that flirts with epicness, but the quiet intro and outro leave something to be desired. I would have preferred to have been left with a fist in the face rather than a whisper in the wind (or to be more accurate, the soothing sounds of the sea.)

I guess I can sum up Wrath simply as Lamb of God doing their thing, and doing it well in an improvement over Sacrament. There has been no change in sound, no going soft from the spoils of major label support and ever increasing exposure and success. My mind keeps flashing with comparisons to Pantera’s The Great Southern Trendkill, but I haven’t been able to nail down anything specific. Maybe it’s because I’m not used to hearing such heavy music released on a major label, and in 1996, that was the heaviest thing I had heard on a major (yes, I’m aware I missed many thrash releases prior.) In 2002, it was big news when Lamb of God scored a slot supporting Mushroomhead on their US tour. Had I known then what I know now, I may have paid more attention at that show. They have earned everything they have now through perseverance and determination, whereas the other bands involved with that tour (Eighteen Visions, Five Pointe-O, and Mushroomhead themselves) have either disbanded or faded into relative obscurity. Now I think it's time to give Wrath another spin and raise a glass of cheap beer to Lamb of God for continuing to kick ass.

Over rated by both the media and fanboys (the band and the album). LOG are starting to look more like a media generated Pantera replacement for this generation. But you know what, that's okay, because a lot of you loved this album and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it a little myself. That still doesn't make up for the fact that these guys have been rather stale since 'Palaces' - not a single release since really stands up to that crowning achievement in the long run.

Nothing has been as good as "As the palaces burn". "Sacrament" was bad....just plain BAD. "Ashes of the wake" was good, but "Palaces" is what got me hooked to them. Now...i just checked them out here and there. Nothing more.

I'm not gonna lie. I think this is Lamb Of God's second worse album next to Sacrament. I didn't like either. Ashes Of The Wake was an aboslute masterpiece, great riffs that didn't sound like anyone else, all the instruments sounded great and the production value was rediculously amazing. All this is is a punk album from a confused Metal band. They once said they were, "A punk band playing Metal" and they're a bit right in that. This album was a complete miss if you ask me. I was expecting some Brutality and a return to the style they created with Ashes Of The Wake but they let me completely down. Sad. I loved the band but now they've become just another mainstream Metal band that's confused of what kind of music they're playing.

LOG is as boring as ever with this release. I fail to see what other people see in these guys. Is it the boring structures? Predictable breakdowns? Lame ass vocals? I dunno. I'm listening to it right now as I'm typing this and I'm shaking my head in disappointment. A band that doesn't deserve their success. From studio to a live setting, they are consistent disappointment.

I wouldn't say right off the bat that this is a bad album at all. LOG have certainly mastered the art of consistently delivering well produced, solid, headbanging music, and this album is no exception. They've definitely sped things up on this one too, they haven't lost a step of the good old aggressive-mosh friendly music we all love them for. I guess my problem with this album is that it lacks replay value. I remember sitting down and listening to all of LOG's previous albums for the first time and being blown away at so many points - rewinding and re-listening to crushing breakdowns or some mind blowingly epic vocal sections etc. This album just kind of had me sitting and listening (contently mind you), but never thinking to myself "wow that was fucking sick I gotta listen to that again." Wrath is still a really kickass album - Adler's drumming is as tight as ever, and it's still proof that LOG is still amongst the elite metal bands going today. It just lacks those key "LOG moments" that had me constantly going back to the old albums to re-listen too. Instead it's just a sprint to the finish without anything really standing out from the rest. Disappointed me a little bit; there's nothing ground breaking here that blew my mind like all of their previous albums. Nonetheless though, it's still a strong album that definitely fucking slays, just not something that's gonna make you come running back again and again.

I find this album a bit boring; it definetly isnt something I will come back to in a year and get the same enjoyment as the first few listens. It just doesnt seem to have much longevity for me; with bands like LoG, Devildriver etc it's great for the first few listens but quickly you get tired and the songs start sounding the same. Simply put although right now I might give it a 5 overall in about a month it might only get a 3. It's a good album but obviously lacking in depth. So I guess I might give it a 4. It's not a horrible release by all means and the album is definetly better then Sacrament(which was frankly tedious after only a few listens). But I think that LoG could have done alot better; they are good musicans but aren't able to write a song you might came back to in a year and think to yourself "Holy Shit this is good".

After listening to the new Obscura, Darkane, Napalm Death, and even Psyopus. I'm convinced this truly a weak-run of the mill "trying to relive Pantera days yehaw!!!" album. I love Pantera, but LOG doesn't even come close. Still an amazing live band, but just sucks on studio albums.

Pretty good review, nicely written. But I am disappointed with this album. It's better than Sacrament, and it has the best production they have had since NAG. I would kill to have them put out another record with Steve Austin at the helm; I just think it suits their playing to have a grittier, thicker sound. Some of the song lyrics are getting very stupid, as well as topics of the "not so well informed" political issues. I don't give a fuck what they think, but the songs have lost interest and appeal over the years. NAG had some much more personal and macabre tracks that did not require a soap box to write. There is too much mainstream appeal here, no doubt from being on a major label yet it (the album) still retains identity as a thrash/metal record. Better tempo than Sacrament, less memorable songs, but more memorable riffs. The singing needs to go, though. I'd prefer the vocals from their 1st two records, but at least drop the singing.

Good album. Chris Adler's drumming has actually gotten tighter and more nuanced, if possible. The positives of this album are the increased tempos relative to Sacrament, fewer goofy vocal styling and effects, more consistent song writing. The negatives of the album are the absence of spastic--not simply fast or even staccato--rhythmic arrangements, arrangements that aurally equated to a knife fight...periods of stasis intermixed with off-kilter, slicing interplay of vocal and instrumental rhythms that all came together in the end. Think "Pariah," "A Warning," "11th Hour," the main riff of "In Defense of Our Good Name," and "What I've Become." Lamb of God does what they do better than anyone else because, well frankly, nobody else does what they do--though there are many stylistic similarities with other bands, but no one band. I anticipate new Lamb of God releases, listen to them, but can no longer expect to be suprised by them. The first three releases--not including Burn the Priest--all displayed distinct flavors setting them apart from other bands of their relative ilk as well as the previous Lamb of God release; however, if Sacrament and Wrath are any indication, there will be no more suprises that stun the listener or represent a marked "positive" change for the band. After all is said and done, Wrath is a damn good release, and while it is not the Lamb of God of old it is the Lamb of God of old, a band locked into a style that is their own regardless of what their detractors say. Probably an 8/10 release.

This cd is probably not going to over as anything that changes the face of metal, or even really the face of LoG itself. But it does provide what LoG is known for, stellar musicianship and a focus on making good music. This cd leaves nothing but that there, nothing amazingly flashy, nothing even all that standout. What I do know is that this cd can be played front to back with no interruptions, the songs fit together, sound like LoG, and most of all, leave me wanting more. Tracks like Broken Hands and Reclamation leave me wondering where they are going in the future. Just be sure that good tours are to come from these guys, and hopefully more albums that kick some ass too.

i downloaded this out of curiosity, LOG was one of my favorite bands like 5 years ago and i still think everything up until AOTW was awesome, sacrament was a piece of shit if you ask me and this is about the same, its a little better but still uninspired. Really its the vocals that kill it for me, Randy used to have this badass commanding drill Sargent voice that was both masculine and intimidating but its just gone, the weak attempts at singing are really irritating and pointless. Chris Adler is still an amazingly solid drummer, not flashy or over the top but god damn can he keep perfect time, its cool to hear him play some suffo blasts here and there. I maintain this album would be infinitely better if Randy would stick to death vocals. The production is clear but a little thin. They need to write more songs like an extra nail for your coffin, that is where i wanted them to go after AOTW. My score: 5/3.5/5

This album destroys Sacrament. Although it definitely isn't the same for as ATPB or AOTW, it craftily combines the two for some great songs. Although bits and pieces of Sacrament do tend to float around on a couple songs, Randy has taken his vocals to another level, the lightning fast tempos of Burn the Priest again come to surface, and the overall song structures are both unique and sound. I've been listening to this album relentlessly along with the non-stop spinning of my Woe of Tyrants album. LoG are back.
