Christ on a fucking pogo stick, I really liked Severed Savior before. Now I really, really like Severed Savior. In a completely homoerotic fashion. But I can’t commit to them on a serious relationship basis. It’s not cold feet or anything; I could totally imagine Severed Savior and I, sitting on the beach, with nothing but the cool island breeze flowing through our hair, the sand between our toes, and the stories we think we’d share as we grew old together. I’m just already committed to several others, being the studly metal polygamist I am. My first partner, Suffocation, would probably not appreciate yet another mate crowding up the apartment.

Seriously though, Severed Savior’s long past due follow-up to Brutality Is Law is pretty damn impressive, but I can’t help but feel the thundering tech reverberations of this year’s earlier offerings from Decrepit Birth, Origin, and Hour of Penance. Still, Servile Insurrection doth shred flesh and shatter bone, featuring several unexpected nuggets in the form of opening face-fister “Question,” guttural/clean instrumental pairing “Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis” and “Intervallo del Tradimento,” and some bizarre, strangely cacophonous riffs in the title track. There’s some feisty little bastards in there as well, including “Fuck the Humans,” “Fecalpheliac,” and…

…wait a second!

Four of the tracks on Servile Insurrection are oldies from their Forced to Bleed EP. So for those of you in the Severed Savior-know, the production on Servile Insurrection is light years from that seemingly ancient time in Severed Savior’s career. That said, I kinda want to smack these guys around so they’ll actually write more new stuff instead of retreading old ground. I understand not that many people will ever listen to an elusive EP from a br00tal band, but damn, five years for 21 measly minutes? I’d feel gypped if only the new material wasn’t so fucking good.

While Servile Insurrection is not necessarily as amazing as contemporary efforts Diminishing Between Worlds or Antithesis, it is a great way to cap off the tremendous death metal releases this year, and is mandatory for anyone that pledges allegiance to the flag Effigy of the Forgotten hoisted all those years ago.

@ Mr.Bojangles: I'm not dogging your list, but no Decrepit Birth or Prostitute Disfigurement on that list?? If Psycroptic makes it then PD has to, IMAO. AND Deeds of Flesh with a last minute car bomb of an album. The production is pretty clean on that one too. I'd say that needs to be reviewed 5 minutes ago, but I know that's a moot point on this sight...

Servile Insurrection is amazing in my opinion and I think it's pretty fucktarded to compare this new album to other band's new albums. Severed Savior has their own sound. Vocally is the only thing I would say sounds anything like Suffocation.

Really dug this release, they just need to drop some of those 8th grade lyrics. But I'm guessing those are the old demo songs re-recorded. At least I hope so.

...wait a second! 3, not 4 of the new tracks are from the "demo" ep. So there's actually 25 measly minutes (not 21) of new material. Good review otherwise!

Between this and Iron Thrones it really satisfies my need for death metal that is able to switch styles on the drop of a dime. The next BTBAM better be awsome for me to give a crap. I also think this album may be scored to low, but who knows.

they arent even top 10 for death metal releases. hello... 1.) Arghoslent - Hornets of The Pogrom 2.) Hail of Bullets - ...Of Frost And War 3.) Dead Congregation - Graves of The Archangels 4.) Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception 5.) Dismember - Dismember 6.) Psycroptic - (Ob)servant 7.) Grave - Dominion VIII minus those 7, its been a fairly shit year for death metal

You guys suck. A 4 for song writing? Even though there are 4 old songs on here, they are better than a 4. SS gets a 4 for not writing enough NEW material. I agree with Yancey on that. Coming from a guitarists perspective I like the cleaner production b/c it shows off the articulation of riffs and gives a more organic feel to the music (even if most tech bands play on EMGs; look into Bare Knuckle pickups for fucks sake). BUT it still sounds sick with more grit and distortion. Somebody needs to find the half way point between crispy clean and Disgorge. @Flah: go listen to SFU. Talk about boring. I am disappointed with the lack of new material so I consider this a Willowtip EP. But they are right up there with Decrepit Birth in ability, and right up there with one of the better death metal releases of 2008.

I`m with flah, prefer my death metal a bit on the sludgey, dirty side...still rate Death Breath`s debut as the best DM album of the last 5 years.

This album is pretty good, but the new Deeds of Flesh album is the thing I can't seem to get enough of lately

This is incredibly boring. I'm tired of these super clean, clinical dm albums. Boo.
