Synopsis:

Competent but rather faceless Dimmu Borgir worship from New York City...

Review:

I’ll admit I’ve always had high hopes for Abigail Williams, partly due to their early ties to Vehemence (Bjorn Dannov is the only remaining tie), and I enjoyed their debut EP, Legend. However, when recently assaulted by American symphonic black metal from Sothis, Blood Stained Dusk and such (and compared to other American releases from the likes of acts like Dreamscapes of the Perverse, The Funeral Pyre, Veneficum), the whole "we REALLY want to sound European” sound loses some of its impact.

Despite being a solid album, the one fundamental flaw when you compare Abigail Williams to their actual, European brethren (i.e Alghazanth, Anorexia Nervosa, and even Dimmu and Cradle), is that they sound like an American band trying ever so hard to sound European. Admittedly there’s no traces of 'core what so ever, but with the guitar tone and structures and even the synths you can still envision short haired metalcore kids playing this, and that is essentially what Abigail Williams is. Part of it might be the synths of Ashley Jurgemeyer, who simply never conveys the romanticism and majestic, epic grandeur of her European counterparts, instead coming across as piecemeal and sterile.

Those criticisms aside, this is a decent effort, though it suffers from simply never reaching the next level. It’s tight, blistering and has ample time changes, but when the ample stops spinning, I’m simply not drawn back to it. Apart from new drummer Samus, whom seems naturally fitted to this style to the point where he just seems to be playing slightly faster than everyone else, none of the musicianship really grabs me either. The ten songs swarm by with orchestral ferocity and ample synth tinkering that can’t decide if it’s sweeping and orchestral (“Into the Ashes”) or electronic (i.e. “Acolytes”), the vocals are the usual black screech and there's the requisite atmospheric segue (“A Semblance of Life”). Only the album's mid section of “A Thousand Suns” (with vocalist Ken Sorceron doing a passable Garm/ICS Vortex impersonation), “Into the Ashes” and the very Dimmu–ish “Smoke and Mirrors” makes my ears perk up and take note. Before and after those tracks, it’s all just ‘there’ in all its Dimmu worshipping glory.

Abigail Williams are a good band and this is a good CD, but there are just something the Scandinavians do better; high quality erotica, Vikings, nationalized healthcare and symphonic black metal.

Oh, and on a side note, if you are in a black metal band, you should probably decide as a band whether to have spooky, black metal names or normal names; Introducing yourselves as Samus, Bjornthor, Plaguehammer, Sorceron and then..... Ashley and Mike Smith, just isn't right.

You guys are fucking retarded, they wove a great album full of solid musicianship and sweeping melodies. Fuck off tools and go listen to "endless minor thirds" bands.

Poser black metal for the combover crowd. What the fuck does "In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns" even mean? It's a meaningless phrase that pinpoints everything that's wrong with this band. It's only purpose is to sound vaguely "epic" and similar to Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk, Storm of the Light's Bane, or Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. Utterly plastic.

I think those ICS/Garm vocals are actually not "passable" at all given the amount of auto-tune dripping from them. Those guys probably have some voice correction sometimes but this sounds more like the robo-vocals on the new Cynic album than a strapping Swede. And the keyboards are like 10th rate Arcturus/Dimmu worship.

I disagree quite a bit here; I found this album to be pretty good. James Murphy did a great job on the production (and his forthcoming projects like SWWAATS etc should be equal or greater sounding) in bringing all of the instruments out in the sound. Nothing was mentioned in the review of guest appearances. And after seeing them in Tampa on the 11/5, they said Ashley is out- wouldn't tour, new boyfriend, etc. You wouldn't be able to see her on stage anyways with Bill Robinson of Decrepit Birth starting a mosh and then whipping anyone within range with his dread-locks.

They're definitely no Emperor, who is? But c'mon, give 'em a break, for their first LP this is pretty solid. Who knows what they could end up doing. Of course they don't have talent oozing out of their fingers like Ihsahn but still..

Scores seem too high for how much bashing was in the review

The last sentence is hillarious. I love Vehemence. I don't hate this band but ties are loose at best. Vehemence was a tight, lyrically briliiant death metal band. This is Emperor knock off. I love Emperor but this isn't the same quality by a long shot. I was looking forward to this album but I think the review is spot on. Maybe something better is forthcoming.

Symphonic Black Metal in general is pretty heartless (not COLD or GRIM, just calculated), and its US spawn is even moreso. The style may have once been an artistic expression, and there are some good/great bands existing within the genre, but what once seemed to expand the landscape of Black Metal seems incredibly limited in its scope nowadays, and these guys are no exception. To each their own, but I'm not impressed at all by Abigail Williams.

Well ya know what...what's wrong with wearing your Dimmu adoration on your sleeves?? They're a good fucking band and they're great at what they do. So what if Dimmu isn't "tr00" black metal, they're metal right? Isn't that all that matters? Hooray for symphonic "extreme" metal that "purists" are too ignorant to accept because they might be a little popular.

I'm actually enjoying this quite a bit. I watched a video of the drummer playing a song (without the vocals) and the guy is absolutely top notch - but I also agree, their Dimmu admiration hangs on their sleeves.

I think this album is just fine. Very good slab of melodic black metal.

A good read again, Erik. One thing that you Yanks here in MR have in common with us Scandinavians is low self-esteem ;) Looking this from a Scandinavian and especially Finnish perspective, I think Abigail Williams compares just fine with its European peers. They have nothing to be shamed of. I agree with you in that this effort is somewhat generic but rather enjoyable in small doses. You may find it also interesting that this album has received a few praising reviews here in Scandinavian zines.

This is a little more Dimmu of Filth sounding than I remember the EP being. Not quite sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing at this point, though I'm leaning toward the latter.
