Like many fans of Ye Olde Days Of Metale, I was pleased with the idea of these newbie thrash bands popping up everywhere, raising their horns in tribute to bands and albums I’d always loved. But sadly, I was never really blown away by much of the actual music.   As fun as Fueled By Fire, Merciless Death, Toxic Holocaust and the like may be in the moment, none of them left any huge lasting impression on me, aside from making me truck my fat ass downstairs to dig up my jean jacket and my copy of Darkness Descends or Hell Awaits or Pleasure To Kill.

Until now.

So here’s to you, Warbringer, for kicking my jaded butt across the room and making me want to listen to you instead of whatever’s on your iPod.

Musically, War Without End blends the usual array of influences—particularly Slayer and Exodus—with a shade of early death metal like Death and Obituary. Vocalist John Kevill is venomous, a snarling blend of the legendary vocalists of the bands I just listed, with Araya as his most obvious forefather. (Most pleasing to these ears: his occasional tinges of John Tardy-ness. “Hell, yes,” I say when that sweet growl hits. “Hell… yes.” He also avoids too much of the falsetto squealing, and that makes me happy.)  The riffs are fast and precise, appropriately reverent at the altar of Bonded By Blood without being lame cliche. John Laux’s and Adam Carroll’s solos are fleet-fingered and surprisingly melodic.  While their performances are furious as hell, nothing here is sloppy—Warbringer isn’t as technical as, say, Megadeth, but they’re tighter than the likes of vintage Sodom.  On the songwriting front, there are tons of gang choruses on hand, and while by disc’s end the tracks start blurring together a bit, the band has the good sense to vary their approach just  enough to keep your attention dialed in for most of the ride. To top it off, there are plenty o’ mosh-worthy mid-tempo sections for the circle pits.

War Without End also packs a pretty solid production punch. Having thrash guru Bill Metoyer behind the boards gives the record some retro-cool street cred, for sure, but he’s smart enough not to make it a total rehash of his past.   Even as it pays direct homage to its ancestors, War Without End wallops like a modern record, instead of being solely a re-enactment of 1986.  (For example, the guitars have actual low-end.)  Put another way, it sounds like a band from back then time-warped up to now and made their next record, instead of sounding like some kind of archaeological dig unearthed this in DD Verni’s back yard and now here it is in my car stereo. I will take a small potshot at one little thing: Assassin called, and they want their menacing-tank-on-yellow-background artwork back.

So, yeah, you’ve heard all this before, it’s true. In fact, you’ve literally heard some of it before, since four of these tracks are on their debut EP, One By One The Wicked Fall. (What’s here from that release is re-recorded with improved production.) But chances are, you’ve not heard this done much better since the first wave of thrash giants two decades back. So I’ll admit that I’m impressed, as if you couldn’t tell. It’s just damn energetic, and it punches hard and fast, exactly what I always loved about old-ass Testament and Sacred Reich and whatnot. After all the buzz around their mini-scene, Warbringer has finally given me the thrash-revival album I wanted to hear.

Just saw them on the Exodus tour and was very impressed. They certainly seem the leader of the pack when it comes to the newer thrash bands. I don't get any death metal vibe at all from listening to them, nor do I think the vocalist sounds like John Tardy. I get a heavy Mille Petrozza influence from a vocal standpoint. All in all, good stuff, especially if you're a thrash fanatic.

@ Anxiety Hangover You are correct in your assumption re: Victimizer (a lapse on my part that I intend to correct as quickly as possible). That's why I didn't mention them in the opening paragraph. But I'm set to review Hellish Crossfire and respectfully disagree with you there. That one didn't do much for me either. I need to listen to it a few more times, but upon first listen, I found it to be a very solidly played record with only a few moments that stuck with me.

@ JW If this is the thrash-revival album you've been waiting to hear, I can only assume you haven't heard Victimizer's The Final Assault or Hellish Crossfire's Slaves of the Burning Pentagram. Both of those beasts thrash circles around this weak Bay Area retread shit.

I think the production on this full length sucks a huge wang!!! If you listen to the EP that was released before this, but with the same songs found on the full length, you will notice a big drop-off in production quality, imo. Still a good thrash metal album though.

Those Nocturnal Rites residuals just keep rolling in, eh Cap? My Nommam Erytz review paid for 3 fillings and a crown...and I still had enough cash left over for a bottle of Silver Wolf and a burrito.

Yeah, MR must be rolling in uncashed checks the labels send them to review these bands. It's a shame we don't live in world where we have access to samples of a band's music, and, upon hearing them, can formulate our own opinions that either agree or conflict with these 'corporate monsters', and use that opinion to initiate intelligent, constructive dialogue within a community of our peers. Fight the good fight, peanutbutter. Get yourself a computer, a website, and write your own goddamn reviews. Fight against these amoral mind-controlling billionaires at Metal Review. Douche.

MR, being the giant sponsor-driven pop-culture editorial they are, reap generous rewards from these obviously inflated reviews. We must stand up against the corporate monsters puppeteering our metal reviews! This conspiracy cannot be swept under the carpet forever!!!!!

I was definitely surprised at the quality of this album, given that I half expected the whole "thrash revival" thing to be deflating by now, but the material here is impeccable.

wow peanut butter, you've exposed the dark underbelly of MetalReview.com in one lash, how could you give away the secret fiscal relationship between filthy rich labels and greedy writers? Surely Mr. Witt's been making a killing off of reviews like this, but now has to shake out that golden umbrella after such a prosperous run here at MR, we'll certainly miss him

the reviewer MUST have been payed-off. Seriously, songwriting a 5?! Creativity is nowhere to be found on this album. Also, this is nowhere near tight or technical. The drummer is sloppy and all over the place, and the guitarists don't seem to grasp the concept of progression. Plus, the leads just sound like zombified wanking, no thought whatsoever. This album must have been composed in about 3 weeks. If it wasn't, I feel sorry for them.

Pretty good review. For me personally I am a little torn by this release. While I really do enjoy this album, I have to say that out of most of the recent thrash revival bands, Warbringer sounds a little too re-hashed at times. The inclusion of some blasts and an emphasis at more extreme metal (At the Crack of Doom) do help sell this album yet something just seems too familiar. As far as the review scores, I think you gave production and songwriting a bit too much. The production is not bad, but far from being a five. I think it would be better with a slightly more clean(er) sound. Also, how can you give songwriting a five and then admit that this is all "heard it before material." Oh well. I guess I still prefer Municipal Waste and Dekapitator for my new "old" thrash sound...

I picked this up on the day of its release. Kick ass stuff indeed. However, my only criticism would be the vocalist. He's good, but he just sounds so damn YOUNG. But I try to keep in mind how young James Hetfield, Chuck Billy, and Tom Araya sounded on their first couple albums. Being so young, he doesn't seem to have total control over his vocals yet. I guess I'm just hoping his voice starts going a little deeper on the next album. Who knows, he may not even be on the next album. The guy doesn't suck by any means and the music just F'n rips. Warbringer along with Evile and Municipal Waste are my 3 faves when it comes to the new thrash revival. I'm just waiting a couple more months when Testament returns to kick EVERYONE'S ass, old and new.
