Album Review

I'm going to let you all in on a little secret I've known for awhile now - Kalmah kicks ass. 3 for 3. Not too many bands release three great albums to start off a career, but these fired-up Finns have done just that. Continuing down the path set by the outstanding album They Will Return, Kalmah has further defined their sound to the point where you know a given song is a Kalmah song even before the vocals kick in. The Children of Bodom comparisons that used to be so prevalent have pretty much dissipated to the point where both bands play Finnish-style melodic death, but that's where the similarities end. If anything, they seem a bit thrashier and more determined than Bodom, who come off as a bunch of guys who just want to get out there and have a good ol' headbanging time, not that there's anything wrong with that. As mentioned, this album is more like They Will Return than the debut, Swamplord, but the songs have gained more depth and are less immediate than TWR.
The production is as it was on the prior two: just a little underproduced, with a slight lack of low-end, and Pasi Hiltula's quirky keys (Think Evergrey). Fortunately, this sound fits Kalmah like a glove. The guitars have a sweet sound, with the lead carrying a nice chirpy tone, while the rhythm is thrashy as hell. I've always liked the way that Kalmah tends to throw vocals in as an afterthought, instead, preferring to just let the instruments jam away for minutes at a whack. On Swampsong, they've utilized the vocals a lot more, but learned how to effectively work them in. On top of that, Pekka Kokko's vox sound a bit improved. Pekka and his brother Antti continue to come up with spiraling, flowing riffwork, held down effectively by the blasting backline of Timo Lehtinen and Janne Kusmin.
Opener Heroes to Us has a nice start that builds in intensity until a dirty thrash riff ushers you into some trademark Kalmah metal. Note the way that they use a DEEP growl to back up the chorus. Very nice. And then there's the godly song Cloned Insanity... Great melodic leads set the stage for a song that rushes by at deadly speeds, with the deathblow delivered by a violent brakedown-like riff that first shows at around 1:10 and then again at the close. Bird of Ill Omen is another vicious thrasher that rolls over you like an M-1 Abrams tank. Man With Mystery showcases a bit of Gothenburg-melodicism, sounding a lot like Dark Tranquillity (Feast of Burden).
So if I were to recommend one particular track to listen to, it'd be the first one. And then, just hang tight for the next eight as well. There's no weak link on this album. It's about time this band gets some recognition for their ability to write killer jams. Swampsong has a vitality and urgency that's lacking in the current melodic death scene. This badboy doesn't come out in the states until the end of July, but it comes out in Europe this week, so I know I'll be ordering Swampsong from somewhere very soon. I highly advise you do the same. P.S. It's about foking time that Kalmah gets over to the US. If I don't get a tour or at least a festival appearance, heads will roll.

NO they are Kalmah. COB never cared, Kalmah does. Attitude difference puts them in completely different leagues.

I just reminds me of COB, although I don't know Lothlorien. Even as a Children Of Bodom fan I have to admit that Kalmah rock's more. Sadly they will always be/stay COB2. Should throw these fucking Keyboards away!!

Love the band. Love the CD. Though I still would feel a need to dock songwriting to 5.5 on this since the chorus lines from 'Heroes To Us' and 'Burbot's Revenge' sound so similar.. which happens to be more apparent since the songs are consecutive. But love to see a great band like this get a great review, so can't complain.

Wow. I'm suprised I haven't heard this album earlier. It's great. Nicely crispy, thrashy and melodic. Great guitar work.

I will agree w/ you Tim from metal review on the fact that they were never as epic as metallica, but i still think that alex skolnick could run circles around kirk...skolnick was virtuostic. thats not sayin kirk isnt a god on the fretboard, of course...yea i hope you guys get the black waltz in for review, too. i just got into kalmah, and they are an amazing band...great guitar players those Kokko's.

Oh come on. Now I love Testament and the New Order gets played regularly, but better than Master of Puppets? Not a chance. I would put The Gathering in the same league as MOP and Justice, but not The New Order. Testament is a great heavy thrash band, but they never could get as epic as Metallica used to. And I hope we get that new Kalmah in as well. One of my favorite bands.

Kalmah is good too. But my opinion stands as this. Kalmah > Newer Children Of Bodom. Kalmah < Older Children Of Bodom. (Hatebreeder....ahh. bliss.)

I agree FucBush. "The Preacher" sold me. Amazing album, amazing guitarwork, and amazing dynamic vocals too, that Chuck. And yes, Master Of Puppets is overrated and The New Order is way more brutal.

And this has nothing to do w/ anything at all, but back in the day, Testiment could fuckin smoke Metallica any day of the week. The New Order is so much better than Master of Puppets, it fuckin pisses me that MoP is on everyones best thrash album list. I know its just my opinion and i am a big 'tallica fan (well, was b/f they recorded ''the thing that should not be''{otherwise known as the black album}) but christ, people need to listen to The New Order, by many, its an overlooked gem. and if i offended anyone w/ my rant, you have no idea how much i dont give a fuck! AHHHHAHHHH \m/ \m/

Kalmah take the sound in a more viking direction, while CoB take the goofy hair metal route. Both are damn awesome in my eyes, although AYDY left me a little limp. Can't wait for Black Waltz.

honestly, i think while there are some comparisons , they have a sort of "dark" sound that sets them apart from the fun lovin', face rippin' CoB that, i must admit, i love as well.

It seems to me that Cob are moving towards a heavier, less quirky sound, so I dont know if its fair to compare them anymore. Either way, I like Kalmah more. I feel like their music is deeper and has alot more feeling and variation in the songwriting. I would say that the similarities end with the vocals and the keyboards. Kalmah wins. Metal as Fuck!!! \m/

I just heard the new Norther and I am defintely a little bit disappointed-- This is my first tast of them and they are VERY MuCh Like CoB, well better but still. The lyrics are predictable, songwriting is good-- muscianship is good, especially the solos but I just don't like it as much as the new Kalmah. I will listen more, but the vocals are jsut like COB.

Look clearly there is simarities to COB, however, this band has so much more to offer especially in the songwriting department. This is a damn good disc, not as good as the omnium gatherum album but good. Despite some similarities to COB they seem to incorporate things making the end result all there own. I am not a huge COB fan that sfor sure but this is a good cd for sure and how can anyone deny the musical profiency of this band.

Great album, much better than the debut, and better than the last one IMO. Probably aces the new Bodom, especially since its far more individual, could use a bit more crazy soloing though. 5.5/4.5/5 Kalmah: Viva Americana!
