Score 4.2

As my 4th listen of Sworn Vengeance draws to a close, I find myself asking numerous questions in reference to the makeup of Severe Torture. Do they still have their original belcher? Did they lose their initial guitarists? Did the songwriting duties get handed over to the drummer? What has happened here?

In 2001, I was at the now defunct Ohio Deathfest. So was Severe Torture. To summarize their performance, they rocked the house. People went crazy for Dennis' subhuman watery grunts, the freshly sharpened deth-riffery, and even a "Hammer Smashed Face" cover that induced a pit that knocked over merchandise stands. All this with only one album under their belts, the timeless classic Feasting on Blood. Its successor Misanthropic Carnage took the same familiar path and was a quality product as well. But something went awry with Fall of the Despised. Perhaps the experimentalism was due to a lack of fresh ideas, or a signal that they were headed in a new direction. Well they've attempted to return to the field of "brutal death", but are clearly armed with absolutely nothing. A flaccid production (it's clear, but severely lacks power) flaunts the new vocals of Dennis, which he blatantly borrows from 666,666 other death metal bands; the common gruff to high tradeoffs (there is actual clarity in some areas...Gasp!). What became of the outrageous gurgles of Severe Torture's early days? A characteristic that defined them has been tossed aside and replaced with the dumbed-down version to appeal to Best Buy shoppers. With a signing to Earache this may partially explain the manufactured feel of this lifeless attempt at brutal death. Gone are the high energy blasting riffs that you'll hear in a session with "Feces for Jesus" or "Twist the Cross", replaced with monotonous "cutting room floor" guitar work that, quite frankly, exceeds sitting through church for unrefined boredom & pointlessness. Realistically, there currently is no difference now between today's Severe Torture and an unsigned teenage death metal band that will stay unsigned.

Earache's acceptance and distribution of such a stale product perplexes me. Can Severe Torture do better than this? The proof is in the past. Hopefully their next effort will have a pinch of creativity, energy, and undecipherable vocals to remind us of what they once were. But such results will require drastic measures, and something must be done soon for Severe Torture to avoid becoming the Soilwork of brutal death metal.

Dan, normally I find your reviews pretty accurate. But looking back on this thing a few years later, I think you sold it short by easily two or three points. SV is nothing special, but it's not mediocre either. To my ears it's just a well-done (if not very ambitious) piece of old-school death metal.

Even though this might not be as "brutal" as their earlier work, this is definitely a solid death metal album. One of my favorites of 2007.

"Is it possible to accept that not everyone thinks the same about this album." For most, yes. And as you can see, for some, no.

Is it possible to accept that not everyone thinks the same about this album. There are so many albums out there that either you hate it or you love it. That doesn't mean we have to fill message boards w/ bitching and calling each other children...and now that I think about it...isn't that childish to begin w/? Everyone, please stop trying to hurl insults at each other for disagreeing w/ what you think and actually say something constructive. I think it would be a shame for somebody to completely disregard this review and corresponding posts just because people like to bitch.

Sure Nancy...I will right after you clean all the sand out of your vagina. I don't have to talk to the band to know they're no longer brutal death....unlike you I actually listened to their last two albums. As for me being under 18 I would be willing to bet I was listening to metal while you were still a mistake in your mom's belly.

Hey SallyStrutter, it's hard to take you seriously when your official critique is "it sucks ass". How about you submit a review (or interview, since you're the only one who knows ST don't want to be "brutal" anymore) , or come back when you're over 18. Otherwise, enjoy spinning this boring album. Either way, I don't care.

There's nothing wrong with my humor detector, your review just sucks ass....and if you were trying to be humorous that's even more pathetic.

I have to say that I thought this album flowed nicely and was very well executed. Mistrial seconded.

Haphazard Metal Review Team: Thanks for the feedback. Obviously, the last 2 CD's arent brutal death metal like their old stuff. Still this review above fails to mention anything about the Pestilence-style vocals, which I think add to the overall sound. No one else out there is using this vocal style and it is sorely missed. I just dont see how this album is boring (alhthough the new Hate Eternal got RAVING scores). FYI - I wouldnt have minded Feasting on Blood Part 4 either.

Apparently Severe Torture still considers themselves brutal death metal, at least that's what I got from the "Death Metal/ Grindcore" tags they gave themselves at mykid'sspace page, and so does their record label Earache..The label themselves, on Fall of the Despised: "Death Metal done the way Death Metal should be done. Nice and brutal but still with a high level of intelligence and creativity." And on Sworn Vengeance: "Blistering new album from Dutch Technical Death Metallers Severe Torture, "Sworn Vengeance" sees the band continue the sonic violence that we have come to expect and expelling any notions of haircut pretenders taking over the throne! Brimming with a sharp refocussed energy "Sworn Vengeance" is simply put one of the most urgent direct pure death metal albums of recent times!" So Spiritcrusher, I assume you've had a chat with the band and they've just recently told you that they are done with brutal death? Maybe they should tell everyone else as well. Also, your humor detector is broken. Trade it in for one that works properly. And Devil Himself, maybe I was expecting a Feasting on Blood 4, because it would help alleviate the chronic yawning syndrome I experience listening to this infinite borefest. It is not "technical death" , nor is it "sonic violence".But you are right about the production. I was too harsh after listening to it back to back with FOB. I will adjust accordingly, but I'm still put to sleep by every song and find the musicianship to be outrageously average.

I also disagree very much with this review, especially for the production score... wtf? This is a tight, focused, well-produced death metal album. I move for a mistrial

I can understand what the reviewer is talking about. If you're looking for music thats in the vein of their older stuff, then you're going to be disapointed. Dont get me wrong, I love the early stuff, and I DO consider Feasting on Blood a classic, but its as if this reviewer is asking for Feasting on Blood part 4. What I dont understand are the terribly low scores. Im sure if you look up some gayass metalcore garbage on this site you'll see higher scores than what this got. Seriously, why a 3.5 on the production ? Im not sure what the big suprise is to the reviewer, cause this album has a similar sound and sytle as Fall of the Despised, except that this album seems more focused and has better songs. This is straight forward death metal, with blasts, deep vocals and Pestilence-style vocals and thrashy guitars. I love this album, and think its one of the best of 2007. Its amazing, when Severe Torture was making a name for themselves, people just labelled them a Cannibal Corpse clone (which they arent), and now that they've changed their style, people bitch. I highly recommend this album to any fan of death metal.

The only thing I agree with in this review is that this album is alot different than Feasting - and it's alot better. Feasting on Blood was good Cannibal Corpse worship but nothing more. A timeless classic???? hahahha. I love the fact that Severe Torture has added alot more thrash riffs and the distinguishable vocals are a huge improvement over the belch burps. Fact is they're not trying to be a brutal death band anymore. And as pointed out before this is the second album released on Earache and it's their best yet. This review is good for a laugh but trust me that anyone reading it should listen to the band first before dismissing this album.

I've gotta say that I totally disagree with this review. It's cool if you don't like this album but when your major beef is that they aren't playing the same "style" from 7-8 years ago it makes me wonder if you really gave their "new" sound a proper chance. Hell, most bands purposely progress or even regress over time it's what keeps fans wanting to hear new material (at least in most cases). Bottom line is that this is the same line-up from the Fall of the Despised (also on Earache) and if you enjoyed that album you will most likely enjoy this as well.
