Fucking hell, Justin Broadrick is one prolific sonofabitch. In 2007 alone, he’s managed to put out a full-length album (Conqueror), two EPs, a split with like-minded ambient act Eluvium, and a rarities compilation (Pale Sketches), while (finally!) making it across the pond for his first U.S. tour. Even more impressively, all of the aforementioned releases are all quality pieces of work, with nary a dud among them and enough dusky drone-pop ambience to keep you lowering your eyelids and gently nodding your head until the cows slowly float home.

The most recent of these efforts, the four-song Lifeline EP (courtesy of Hydra Head Records), is a fairly typical Jesu release. You’ve got your soft shoegazey pop melodies, interwoven with diffused, faraway vocals  and melded with that familiar quiet ambience wrapped around droning, looped riffs and flashes of brilliant heaviness; deceptively simple song structures belie the true complexity buried beneath the dreaminess. Broadrick is a master of his craft – no one sounds like Jesu, yet Jesu is made up of so many other sounds and textures that almost anyone can find something to hold onto and appreciate. It’s a far cry from Godflesh, and an even farther one from Napalm Death, but Jesu very well may be Broadrick at his best, or at least, at his most fertile.

One of the defining characteristics of Lifeline is the guest appearance by former Swans vocalist/keyboardist and multi-faceted vocal icon Jarboe. A damn near legend in her own right, she seems to have a fondness for working with “difficult,” experimental bands (see her excellent collaborations with Neurosis, Byla and countless others – or, hell, have you HEARD the Swans? ‘Nuff said). Jarboe's throaty, whispery, ethereal, and completely incomparable voice is so distinctive and powerful that one might expect it to overpower the song itself, but her performance manages to complement “Storm Comin’ On much better than you may expect. Broadrick's vague dashes of electronica and light-fingered industrial touches provide a subdued background of sleepy, minimal sound for Jarboe's vocals to shine against, ensuring that few will forget  “Storm Comin’ On” after those almost-six minutes creep by. As far as the rest of the EP goes, the title track, "Lifeline", stands out as an especially beautiful exercise in ambience that ebbs and flows and gently washes over you in the nicest way possible. The other two songs on this effort are more standard Jesu fare – still lovely, still well-executed, just a bit shadowed by the Jarboe track and the genuine loveliness of "Lifeline."

Considering how much damn music Justin Broadrick puts out (he's gotta be edging up on Xasthur's similarly-absurd release record by now), I’m not sure if its really necessary to pick up this EP; he’ll probably have another full-length out tomorrow and follow it up with a couple dozen EPs just for good measure. However, EPs are generally pretty cheap anyway, and this one is chock full of some righteous tunes; I’d say that the Jarboe track alone makes it worth the purchase price, while the other three songs are just icing on the sonic cake. For those who are less familiar with the band, I’d recommend first checking out the self-titled debut album and Silver EP, then forging onwards at your leisure.

Jesu is breathtaking, and that’s really all you can say.

this record is fantastic. More shoegaze than metal, but a great transition after the Silver EP. The record cover says all. "Storm comin' on" is probably my favorite Jesu track i've heard. Excellent review.

They were damn boring for me too until I was really tired one day and giving it one more spin it took me on an awesome daydreaming journey instead. If you don't like it, get tired lol

Okay.. back to the music then. I saw Jesu last night, supporting Mono at the Scala in London. They were totally blown off the stage by Mono. Jesu sounded really lightweight overall, even during the much more dense tracks from the s/t album, 'Silver' sounded tired (and not in the way it's supposed to), and the tracks from 'Conqueror' just sounded flat without the hundreds of layers of guitar that get added in the studio. Broderick seemed to be struggling not to sing out of pitch (something he did frequently, by the way) or even to be heard (his voice is really weak), the drummer was using the drum-riser as a pillow for the most part, and the bass player looked like someones dad. The band themselves had no real movement or chemistry on stage with the audience (very poor showmanship), and the only real positive to the band came from a Welsh roadie I was speaking with at the merch table, who was a really nice guy. At the end of the performance, the drummer leant down to pick up the magazine that he had stopped reading to start playing from the floor (something that reminded me of a man on the toilet having finished his shit more than anything else), and both he and the bass player just left the stage at the end of the last track when their parts were done rather uncermoniously, leaving JK to abit of a wank fest with some feedback, which was just dull.. Not a band I really would recommend to anyone, or at least live in any case. Besides anything else, its really difficult to get excited about seeing a bored looking roadie / fourth member of the band playing around with samples, just to add noise in the background, and three other losers on stage making music which you might as well have just not bothered come to see and listened to the CD instead. As stated earlier, Mono by comparison, were amazing.

I like it.. but it seems that he losing his metal sound slowly. "Conqueror" was a great albums.. but not as intense as the self ftitled debut. Good review.

Jimb's homosexuality isn't latent. He spends far too much time talking about the subject for it to be anything but flagrantly obvious that he is a self-hating queer. Look below for proof, he stated that he uses this EP to make sweet love to his boyfriend while writing his poetry (which must be his code name for all of his sad lashouts). Also notice how he couldn't disguise his love for cock by labeling the CD "bone-chilling" - more like "bone-milking" in his case. It's sad how the self-loathing knob-gobblers are always the most vocal anti-gays. It takes one to know one, so I can assure you that Jimb is among the legion of Gay Trolls. Someday he will embrace his true self and officially join us, and we'll show him the meaning of "bone-chilling". Grab an ice cube and come see us, Jimb! Stop denying yourself what you truly desire!

I'm pretty sure Jimb is stuck in denial of his own latent homosexuality. It's okay, buddy -- you can come on out of that closet now. I promise we won't judge you too harshly.

@Kim: Hadn't heard of either band. Just listening to Nest on myspace at the moment - freaking awesome! I was going to buy a soldering iron next pay day (as you do) but I might have to reprioritise (this is also a downside of hanging round MR... the ability to consistently find new reasons to get rid of one's savings) Will check out VĂ li as well. Thanks!

Kudos to Devin - a worthwhile sentiment. I'm liking this, though I prefer his harder egged stuff (Friends are Evil etc.) but it's pretty great and some interesting sounds. I'm not sure about the Jarboe track - it's pretty compelling but I think the music lets down the vocals here a little. Otherwise great. I'm seeing Jesu tomorrow night in Glasgow - woohoooo!

Breathtaking...how did I just know that stupid word would be found in this review? It's because it's Jesu, and it doesn't matter how boring and monotone they are, there are people who have really low standards who will always like them. To me this crap is music for gay love and writing bad poetry in the nude. I personally would have used the word "bone-chilling" instead, because any heterosexual man would get severe chills listening to music that's as pink as a penis-sandwich.

Jesu belongs on MR simply because a) it has something about it that is essentially metal, even if the delivery is shoegaze/indie whatever the hell you want to call it and b) it is Justin Broadrick. Every metalhead has moments where they look at the CD rack and can't find anything to put on. MR has led me to bands like Neun Welten, Tenhi, Red Sparowes, Agalloch... all good when you need a pause from the daily grind (ha ha ha, best pun ever...) - in some way it is all metal.

Can we stop all the lashes about whether or not certain albums should be reviewed on this site? PLEASE?? Most Jesu fans listen to metal in some capacity, and Justin Broadrick has an enourmous back catalogue that falls neatly into the "metal" catagory. Why WOULDN'T a metalreview.com reader be interested in this? Seriously - enough from the elite metal guard trying to protect all that is "tr00" from all that is false. You sound like a bunch of close-minded assholes. Newsflash: METALHEADS LISTEN TO AND ENJOY OTHER TYPES OF MUSIC!

Chalk me up on the 'track three with Jarboe is horrible' side of the divide. I really didnt think much of this on first listen (in fact I got bored very quickly and started doing something else), gave it a few more tries and I guess it grows on you, but still.. the first track is just too unremarkable, even for a style that is supposed to drone uneventfully. It just sounds like a b-side from Conqueror, that didnt make the cut. Track two is much better, but track three is shite, and then track four spills back into that unremarkable-but-would-be-good-if-only-I-listened-to-Jesu-exclusively territory. I find it faintly amusing that the obvious weak link in the Jesu armour (the vocals) somehow managed to be made worse when one of the big selling points on this EP's spiel was their improvement with a guest vocalist. Perhaps J.K's trying to underscore a point somewhere..

I'm not so sure Jesu really belongs on a metal review site...maybe a site for "too hard for soft rock, but not really quite metal review site". However, Jesu is great for those rainy days when life's got you down and you just don't feel like guttural growls and blast beats, but not quite depressing enough to make you want to open some veins in your wrists, either. I'm not saying I don't like it, I'm just saying it's kinda far away from anything under the classification of "metal". Just my opinion.

Actually no i didn't miss the Cure, or any band from most eras, i just happen to think in this day an' age, Jesu do something most bands can't - ORIGINALITY. And to Mr. Pro praliphtic...i like Jesu, Sunn o))) and a bunch of those other bands, but i dont' claim to be "cool" because of it. In fact, nobody i associate with has any clue who those bands are so the only thing i do with them is listen to them...but i guess i'm just full of shit and these bands are just absolutely terrible...what was i thinking all this time letting my ears and my brain tell me what sounds good...

"Storm Comin' On" is the track I've gone back to listen to, it shows the most growth and is one of the most unique Jesu tracks- defintely the highlight. I'm a Broadrick fanboy and will listen to anything he puts out. Pro Praliphtic is right though; Sunn O)) is terrible.

"Jesu is absolutely awesome and push the envelope all the time. In a world of consistently bad music, they lead the pack of the few original bands who make music because they love music." Yeah, you must have missed the Cure and some other bands the first time around. If you like it that is cool, but "pushing the envelope" and "original" is stretching it a tad.

Its easy to be prolific when you can stretch 5 notes into a record. Yahhwwnn. Im soooooooooooooooooooo tired of me. Im soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooootired of me. Imsssoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooootiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrredddddddddddddddd of me. I am so tired of this fucking style. Talk about scenesters makin a rucuss over shity music. Look at sun0)). Not only did they steal their name from an amp (? no lawsuit yet??) but they keep making the same goddam album over and over and people are eating it up (sorry guys). Enough. Start rocking again or hang yourself. You are not cool because you like music that is so bland and repetive that all the people at your office think you a sage or wizard. OK rant over.

i don't know... maybe the man has just released too much music lately because i am having a really hard time getting excited about this. it sounds so much like everything else that it has all become an indecipherable blur. it's decent enough, but i just don't need anymore Jesu in my life for like... at LEAST a year.

I actually think that the Jarboe track drags the release down. Her work with Neurosis was much better. The other 3 Jesu tracks are among his best.

it's funny how half the reviews i read of 'lifeline' say 'storm comin' on' is the highlight by a long shot while the other half say 'great ep, but the jarboe track is pants.' i guess i'm in the latter camp. there are elements of that song that appeal to me, but the big-dumb riff that hits halfway through doesn't work for me (which is odd, since i normally love big dumb riffs), and her weird ethel-merman-went-goth warble just sounds terrible regardlesss of the backing track. but whatever, the other three tracks are golden, particularly 'lifeline' and 'you wear their masks.' not sure it's metal anymore, if it ever was, but i'm always happy to see it reviewed favorably.

Jesu has really grown on me in the last year or two, but I'm having trouble getting into this release. I loved the other EP he released this year, and I think the Conqueror album is Jesu's best work yet, but this EP just seems to be a little too meandering and poppy for my tastes. The track with Jarboe, however, is outstanding. Definitely a classic.

Seriously? I think you're being rather generous with the scores on this one. I like some of Jesu's other material, but this was extremely uneventful, boring (maybe that's the point) music. 4/2/2
