It’s easy to become jaded as a metalhead. The focus on fastest-loudest-heaviest overstimulation and glut of similar-sounding bands can reduce even the most ardent fan to a sneering elitist (as anyone who’s frequented metal web forums can tell you), and frankly I’m no exception. That’s why I’m thankful as fuck for bands like Anaal Nathrakh. Where the vast majority of groups I come across writing for this site offer little more than temporary satisfaction, these British maniacs are amongst the hallowed few who can make me forget my desensitization to extreme music and compel me to bang my head like I’m fourteen and hearing Slayer for the first time all over again. With Hell Is Empty…And All The Devils Are Here, they’ve done just that for the fourth consecutive time, and are well on their way to cementing themselves as one of the greatest metal acts of our era.

Anaal Nathrakh are most often classified as a black metal band; they were never a particularly traditional example of the style and at this juncture become even less so (this means that you corpsepainted basement-dwelling Darkthrone fellators can get the fuck out now before your delicate sensibilities are offended). Like Eschaton before it, Hell Is Empty… is an even blend of mechanized death metal, bleakly epic melody, and the preposterously violent BM of The Codex Necro. Once again the band benefits immensely from a clear, loud, modern production—no muffled drums or buried ‘grym’ vox here, thankfully. Multi-instrumentalist virtuoso Mick Kenney (Mistress, Frost, Exploder…or should I call him ‘Irrumator?’) has stepped it up again with an even more diverse and surprisingly infectious exhibition of hyper-intense riffing, from the precision grooves of “The Final Absolution” to the grave blastbeaten trem melodies of “Lama Sabachthani,” as well as absolutely nailing some tastefully brief solos on tracks like “Screaming Of the Unborn.”

Talented as Kenney is, though, even he is a little upstaged by the absolutely jaw-dropping performance of Dave Hunt/V.I.T.R.O.I.L.. There is no doubt in my mind that this man is one of the best metal vocalists of all time. In a genre where every singer is trying to sound possessed, Hunt actually does it, and it sounds like all of Hell is erupting out of his lungs every time he opens his mouth here. Hunt’s performance too has grown more diverse, and it seems that he’s learned to generate just about every vocal tone imaginable with his barbed-wire lump of a larynx. From his trademark head-exploding scream to br00tal inward gutturals to a whole arsenal of bellows, growls, grunts, yelps and screeches, the guy can do it all. To top it off, the fucker can still do spot-on Ihsahn (Emperor) cleans, and the four tracks on Hell Is Empty… featuring his epic singing (“Der Hölle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen,” “Virus Bomb,” “The Final Absolution,” “Shatter the Empyrean”) are amongst the most fiendishly catchy on the album. Don’t think for a moment that Anaal Nathrakh has abandoned their famed causticity, though. One listen to the impossibly intense blast of hate that is pure-BM closer “Castigation and Betrayal” will bring you right back to the Codex Necro days, and’ll probably leave you wondering whether this band is even human (signs point to ‘shit no,’ says my heavy metal magic 8-ball).

I really can’t say enough good things about this band, and the only real criticism I can think of is that this isn’t quite as much of an evolution past Eschaton as I would’ve liked. Where most black metal bands simply settle for a goofily cliché ‘evil’ persona, Anaal Nathrakh have actually achieved an aesthetic of utter misanthropic hatred. More importantly, they’ve made hatred fucking rock. Remember the first time you heard a blastbeat? This’ll give you that grand old feeling again. When people use the term ‘extreme metal,’ this is what they should be talking about. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, fucking buy this.

Anaal Nathrakh - are one of the best metal acts ever not just to come from "posh ol' england!" this shows we ain't so fucking posh peeps! and that some of the most pissed off angry people come out of england i love hell is empty and all the devils are here - thats so.... true just look around at the world its crawling with them, i love V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s vocal range there is no one else like him out there he can scream like his lungs are gonna explode, and with his clean vocals he could be in a fucking choir and wouldn't be outta place! he could well be satan in disguise! coz half the time he certainly doesn't sound human even when AN perform live the guys insanely incredible - but without Irrumator there would be NO AN he IS Anaal Nathrakh the guys pure fucking genius bring on the next fucking album i cannot wait! no media business pricks could possibly stand this band they're more than just noise though as the description of this band says, they ARE the soundtrack to Armageddon(and i dont mean the shitty bruce willis film!) when the world explodes or implodes whatever fits best this is what it would sound like Anaal Nathrakh - on speed!! now theres a daunting or awesome prospect depending where you stand on the subject of anaal nathrakh and their sound they are the epitome of metal ive got every album i love each and every one of them please let there be a new album....

At first this sounded like a bit chaotic and jumbled to me, but once I got used to their sound it really grew on me. I'm reminded of Napalm Death and Emperor at different points. I really like their sound. Fast as hell but still heavy and thick. Only thing I'd change is to have Dave stay in his lower vocal register more. I'm not a fan of the high pitched shrieks, but other than that this is a great CD.

If I could change the No.1 and No.2 spots on my year-end list for 2007, I'd probably rank this ahead of Mayhem. I'm sitting here smack-dab in the middle of this album and just tingling all over like my whole body is waking up after losing circulation. Such a brilliant fucking band, a definite 6/6/6 from me, and probably my favorite from them so far. "Shatter The Empyrean"...Jesus CHRIST!!

What's up with the production on this album? It's like there's too much treble on the cymbals, resulting in an unpleasant, piercing metallic sound pervading the whole record. It pretty much ruins the listening experience for me, which is a shame because the music is typically excellent

Great release once again. Violent as hell and structured like a beast. Genetic Noose made my fingers curl and I seriously had to listen to it about 4 times in a row and then calm down. Made me feel like i died or something. Joe Horvath's vocals on Genetic Noose are a great match to AN's music. I would love more than anything to hear a colaboration between Dave Cunt and Joe on the next one. Screw the haters, the clean vocals on the CD are great. Can't stop listening!

Killer release. Genetic Noose blew my mind, then I read that it was actually Joe Horvath of Circle of Dead Children doing the vocals on that track. Does anyone know if V.I.T.R.O.I.L. is on any of Genetic Noose or is that all Joe/CODC? Either way, it's raging as hell. Alot of people are dissing the clean vox but I think they're pretty awesome and fit well and add the clusterfuk of sound. Great review and album!

Apparently Anaal don't publish their lyrics - so we've been labouring over "The Final Absolution" and this is what we reckon the chorus is. Any advances would be welcome. Chorus: Such ranks of worship, millions strong Yet the chalice was poison With these servants standing strong Witness; sing “the devil gone”

Absolutely dead-on...whereas there may be less noticeable evolution between this album and Eschaton, there are a few new elements - Gorefest style growls, and more of a traditional death-metal sound and production style. V.I.T.R.I.O.L.'s vocals get better, clearer, and more vital to the overall sound. Song structure has improved and developed, but is still far from mainstream.

Codex Necro is still my favourite Anaal album probably because I'm a bit of a BM purist. I still love their other albums, but Codex is just a masterpiece that once can listen to indefinitely. Still waiting for my copy of this album because of the damn post office strikes in the UK but The Final Absolution (on MySpace) sounds incredible!

Sounds interesting, will definitely check this out, although I must admit that it's pretty far removed from my preferred sound (Total Fucking Necro/Codex Necro/When Fire Reigns are by far my favourite releases for sheer unrelenting hatred). Nonetheless, anything this band releases is nothing less than essential.

I'm going to go home and order this album. I'm was a bit late jumping on the AN ship as I've only really started listening to them in the last year, but as said in the review this band is one of metal's elite. The band seemlessly binds some of the darkest and heaviest music I've ever heard. I cannot wait to hear this and I hope that one day I have the chance ot see them live.

The name comes from Merlin's Charm of Making in John Boorman's Excalibur (1981). Given Michael Everson's transcription, Anaal Nathrakh means "serpent's breath". thats a better description on the bands name origin.

You are correct good sir. This album is absolutely fantastic. The first times I heard both The Final Absolution and Genetic Noose I immediately soiled my pants. I then put the album on repeat and listened until my bowels were empty. Truly this is one of the heaviest/grooviest albums that I have heard in recent months. Definitely worth buying.

actually in contrast to the review i think this is a big step forward from Eschaton. the songs are tighter wound and dare i say, even GROOVE at times. great review though, the comparison to listening to Slayer for the first time is spot on.

"I think if they stuck with a mentality closer to Darkthrone's there would be a higher probability I would like them. " Heh. Anyway this album is unbelievable. Great review, though I would say that the clean vocals sound more like Garm (Arcturus) than Ihsahn. Like you said though, they somehow managed to get even better, and this album fucking kills. The vocals are unbelievably insane and also, the riffs. This release...just...amazing. I can't even come up with the words. Total insanity, and yet even more catchy than before.

I'm hearing a lot of Napalm Death-like riffs hidden behind black-metal like production. Also I am really not a huge fan of their attempts at clean vocals - they sound way out of place. Frenetic, urgent, grinding material that unfortunately does not really invite more than 2-3 spins ever.

This band is so overrated it hurts. The Codex Necro was good but I don't think anything else from them is worth $15 or even 5 minutes. I think if they stuck with a mentality closer to Darkthrone's there would be a higher probability I would like them. I will say that they are at least out of genre. They definitely have their own thing.
