Album Review

To say the least, Alaska was not the kind of Between the Buried and Me album I was hoping for in 2005. That's not to say I ever bought into the conventional wisdom that this band was incapable of writing songs, or that none of the various styles they tried to cohere “belonged” together. I actually just thought Alaska sounded a little sterile, and a little too obsessed with complex death metal riffs that just didn't sound good. However, I do respect this band's ambition and consider them capable of writing some pretty immersing material, no matter how pretentious and self absorbed it may come across. Case in point, Colors is by far the most ambitious BTBAM album yet, and in no way will it quiet those who criticize this band's scatter-brained compositional style. But, for me, it is one hell of a ride.

“Foam Born (A) The Backtrack” starts the album off on a subdued note with Tommy Rogers showcasing his creative debt to Freddie Mercury. But, the ballad is short lived, as the interrupting “(B) Decade of Statues” offers the expected technical and jarring death metal/metalcore most have come to expect from BTBAM. This isn't exactly the opening statement I wanted to hear. Fortunately, the following tracks, “Informal Gluttony,” “Sun of Nothing” and “Ants of the Sky,” offer some of the most exhilarating BTBAM material to date. “Informal Gluttony” is probably the most focused and linear song this band has written since their self titled debut. Driven by eastern melodies and deft tremolo riffing, this is the kind of song I imagine many BTBAM detractors have been waiting for this band to write for a long time, as it shows them being progressive, but not zany. Interestingly, each song on Colors segues into the next. As such, the band is able to create some serious forward momentum. “Sun of Nothing” and “Ants of the Sky” showcase two very reassuring things. The first is Paul Waggoner's resurgence as an excellent writer of sonorous and melodic guitar riffs; the second is the band's willingness to use that ability to create massive surges and crescendos. The bridge between the two tracks is an absolute feast for those who love to hear great guitar players simply unleashing everything in their arsenal. For me, these tracks offer so much of what I missed on Alaska, and that's the band just indulging the listener with exhilarating, melodic acrobatics.

However, the definitive statement here is closer “White Walls.” On this final track Waggoner plays like a man on fire, only briefly wandering into that perilous latter Opeth-ian style of heartless riffing where he so often found himself on Alaska. Not to undersell the talents of his bandmates, as for once the strength of a BTBAM album lies in its songs and not just fleeting moments, but in many ways it is Waggoner who elevates this album to its highest highs.

I'm a Between the Buried and Me supporter. I wouldn't call myself an avid fan, but I see a lot of talent in this band and I've been waiting for them to cash in with a great album since they first showed potential and foresight with The Silent Circus. Colors is the album I've always kind of hoped they would make. While not a perfect album, it's an endlessly compelling one that invites repeat listens, and rewards more with each spin. I've had my fair share of ups and downs with this band, and almost every moment on Colors is as up as I've heard this band go.

BTBAM need to sort out two things - 1. Songwriting 2. Live act Sure, they're tight. Sure, they can certainly play their instruments. But good songwriting is knowing when to hold back and when to go full tilt. These guys, despite some serious talent in the musicianship department, are constantly full tilt. Some songs are incredibly good (Alaska, All Bodies, Informal Gluttony) but these standout moments are held back by the lack of coherence in the songwriting. Oh, and they're boring as hell live. The most static show I've seen, and I've seen Dream Theater live.

i am extremely baffled as t o why this cd didnt get a 666. it was a well written review but come on, this was by far the best albulm of 07 and maybe the best "metalcore" albulm ever. i dont understand how you could give the songwriting a 4.5. i ve seen a lot of 6s handed out on this sight to crap that didnt deserve it (i.e protest the hero) but ive kept my mouth shut. i feel that its extremely disrespectful to give a cd of this calibur anything less then a perfect score.

@ moses - how can you not like this? Waggoner is arguably a virtuoso, he can shred like barely anyone else in metal today can. I thought over in the JFAC lashes you said the ability to play your instrument meant you could write good songs?

AMAZING songwriting. only BTBAM can hold my attention through a 14 minute song. This CD is pushing metal further. This is one of the most unique cds ever put out. the band is just so innovaitive in their sound. no where else can you hear something as dazziling as the song 'Ants of The Sky' or 'Sun of Nothing'. this is by far the best album of 2007.

Best BTBAM record ever made. Sun of Nothing and White Walls are by far the best songs I've heard in a long time. After probably 30 listens, I can say this is my favorite album since 300% Density by Candiria and In a Flesh Aquarium by Unexpect. Milestone CD people will talk about later. I got finished listening to this motherfucker, my Sansa obediently switching back to the main menu, and in the silence that followed I could only mutter "Holy shit...". I then sat down and listened to it again.

One of the reasons I like these guys is because they don't sound like everybody else. Once in a while I need a spastic record like this that actually forces me to pay attention, which in turn makes the music better in the long run. This is in my top 5 for the year for sure.

yah i gess im in the minority when i say im not a fan of the band. Even though i will admit this is their best output, ill agree with the guy that says their writing style sucks. If only there was a band that took these progressive ideas (minus the incredibly cheesy parts BTBAM loves infusing in their songs...) but took out all the insipid 'core' influence, that would be something worth listening to, in my opinion. and i actually saw them live a few days ago and was almost bored to tears at their stage presence (except for the singer who was really into it, that was kool)

So much potential, but the writing style sucks. At least to me it does. And the vocals leave much to be desired. It is nearly impossible to discern any of the lyrics without reading along as you listen. That is ok sometimes, but this is too much. BTBAM will not be getting my money.

I haven't bought this one yet, but thanks to a good review and even better lashes it'll get a spin. balls is not a positive adjective, unless you like Glenn Quagmire draggin his sack across your face to make you feel better... "perilous latter Opeth-ian style of heartless riffing"? Heartless? Not Opeth, my friend. Maybe Waggoner, if that's what you meant.

This album is awesome, I've been listening to it for a week and a half solid. It's way more cohesive and flowing than Alaska was. That's what makes it so much better, really good somgs, not just parts of song that are really cool, and the album as a whole flows really well. This album is especially good to listen to if you've got a road trip to go on, so you can listen to it in it's entirety. These guys are rediculously talented, and this album really shows it. Definitely one of my favorite albums of the last few years, already.

Pretty incredible stuff.

I think I like the Spastic Ink/Mr. Bungle/etc influenced parts more than the other riffs. At this point, I just feel as though I've experienced the most noodly/technical riffing of Waggoner that I possibly can, and am no longer all that wowed by the majestic sweep arpeggios. But all that aside, I really do want to like this album; I just haven't given it the proper amount of spins for it to set in fully.

I was slightly disappointed with this album as I liked Alaska a little bit more. The fact that the shortest actual song here is 5:20 with three of them topping out over 10 minutes it makes me wish that the band had made 11 or 12 tracks instead of 8. The Nile-influenced intro of Informal Gluttony really is awesome, but I feel it's contrasted by the horrible quirky bits that UneXpect undoubtedly had a hand in. BTBAM's further territory into self-indulgence kind of put me off a bit. I agree with the score except that I feel that even though Waggoner steals the show, the rest of the band is capable of keeping up with him in playing any kind of style whether it be black metal, technical death, jazz, etc. . . 5.0/4.5/6.0

I was also really skeptical of how this one would turn out. I enjoyed the self-titled, thought The Silent Circus was ok (except for Mordecai, probably my favorite BTBAM song) and was pretty bored by Alaska but they were definitely able to spice it up with Colors. It's just a really hard album to grasp though and I need to give it many more spins before I can truly appreciate it.

Really, Alaska only had possibly two songs that I really enjoyed (Selkies and Backwards Marathon), but those two were enough for me to see what their next album was going to be like. I'm happy to find out that my curiosity was rewarded as Colors is a much more enjoyable effort. I definitely agree with you on the choice to segue each song together; "Sun of Nothing" and "Ants of the Sky" definitely provide a much bigger punch because of that. I all ready know I'm gonna give this many more listens than Alaska.
