Known for his work with Amesoeurs, Mortifera, and Peste Noire, Neige’s least metal project Alcest has oddly enough generated more buzz than the others. While 2004’s Le Secret contained Burzumian screams on “Elevation,” the full-length Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde, or Memories of Another World, has abandoned such harshness in favor of pure shoegaze. Fortunately, this is a dreamy, enrapturing album that excels on all counts, though the vocals aren’t as striking as they used to be, but are still just as arresting, if not more so.

Offering six tracks that clock in at approximately 41 minutes, Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde has more than its fair share of beautiful moments that tug on the heartstrings like, say, the lush, melancholy opening of “Printemps Emeraude,” resigned yet moving passages of the title track, which benefit from the inclusion of acoustic guitar, and the pristine female vocals and sad lead near the close of “Les Iris.” Speaking of “Les Iris,” it’s here, and on “Sur l'autre Rive Je t'ttendrai,” that vestiges of BM appear in the various tones, rhythms, and structural elements, hinting at output from Drudkh, Raventale, and even Agalloch with regards to the acoustic bridge. “Ciel Errant” is sandwiched between the two above-mentioned songs, and is perhaps the most optimistic of the lot, except, however, for celebratory, piano-laden closer “Tu Nan Og.” Though Neige is reportedly responsible for the instrumentation – it’s all impeccably fitting – the female vocals are a true, undeniable asset to the Alcest sound.

Conjuring the beautiful landscape of spring, the nature-oriented Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde is the first of five albums that the France-based Alcest will release via Prophecy Productions. For better or worse, and whether this is overrated or not, it does set the bar pretty fuckin’ high. Still, citing the quality of Amesoeurs and Peste Noire, frontman Neige evidently has the Midas touch, which has obviously manifested itself again and again.

666 in my book. Simply one of the most beautiful albums I have heard in metal in a long time. Finally a BM solo act who is actually a musician!

I like black metal, I like shoegaze, and I usually don't mind fey vocals...I'm practically legally obligated to buy this record.

Shut your face, Grymmbear! I liked the damn album, so what's your problem? If I hadn't liked it, I would have really made fun of the gayness factor in this band, and I probably would have called them Incest rather than Alcest just to be funny.

Jimb, your being here clashes with everybody's sexuality.

This album clashes with my sexuality. It has a very gay french sound that I normally reject immediately by puking, but in this case it somehow works well. It's got great melodies that really stick with you, terrific songwriting, plus female vocals peformed by that little girly-man Neige. Should I queerbash myself for liking this so much? Nah, it's great music, and that's all that matters.

The first Alcest EP was strange... first song was pure New Age music. The second song was totally like Amesoeurs (which is also a great project of his), but a little harsher with some fairly fast drumming. Both songs were like 12 minutes each. Anyhow, the man is one talented mofo. He has a very unique, uber-romantic vision of metal.

Magnifique. A little over-hyped on teh internet, and apparently Neige says he had never heard Loveless until after recording this (and I don't believe that for a second) but it's still nothing short of pure beauty.

fair enough, its been getting to me all day!! i've had Alcest and Fleurety going in the CD player all day listening to them both, and at times i kinda agreed. I dont own the first Alcest release but from what i understand it would be a little more akin to Fleurety? I kinda hear Ulver's Bergtatt in it at times too, especially the production.

The running basslines in the first track is indeed very Fleurety-ish, albeit circa the debut album

@dale - I dunno, I am really hearing Fleuerety here for some reason. The same atmosphere, same Pink Floyd-ishnes....

@ Alex.... are you serious? A rip off of Fleurety?? I just dont see it man, what in the fuck possesed you to make that comparison?? Dont get my wrong, Fleurety arent too bad at all, but the comparison to Alcest and this album in particular is crazy!

FYI, Neige is just a hired gun in Peste Noir. Secondly, this album is a pure rip-off of Fleuerety's "Min Tid Skal Komme". Basically Burzum meets Pink Floyd if you will. Great musicianship, but BORING.

I'm a big fan of this band, and this album was really fucking awesome. Neige is an incredible musician, his guitar work is beautiful and his drumming and bass playing are suprisingly tasteful and expressive. These are songs that I'm going to enjoy for a long time indeed. Acoustic break in Printemps Émeraude is absolutely exceptional. Still second to Jesu in the metal/shoegaze category, however ;)
