It’s been five long years since the pseudo-breakup of Fear Factory and the ensuing backhanded reformation that left “El Presidente” Dino Cazares out in the cold. Fans have waited impatiently for a full-fledged comeback from the machinegun maestro (as Asesino wasn’t exactly a vehicle for global domination) to counterpoint his former bandmates’ endeavors. As Fear Factory has soldiered on with wildly varying results, they’ve also basically hijacked Cazares’ musical identity. Here in the aftermath, the man must juggle the task of pleasing longtime fans (myself included) that are clamoring to hear his signature sound once again, while simultaneously taking care not to copy the band that he had founded in his own image. Wisely, he drives his new band Divine Heresy down death-lined avenues, while screaming “Fuck the haters!” out the window and flipping the world a fat, metal middle finger.

Obviously, his supporting crew is going dictate much of the appeal, as the man’s reputation is such that records will fly off the shelves due to name recognition alone. His much-publicized partnership with drumkit destructor Tim Yeung was as wise a move as he could’ve made, as these two seem destined to wreak cerebellum-fusing, sickeningly symbiotic destruction together for years to come. The big question mark that has been tattooed on this project is the arrival of heretofore unknown vocalist Tommy Vext, the unheralded rookie amid the grizzled vets. Unfortunately, his inconsistent vocal performance, as well as a lingering “Is this it?” feeling, ultimately detracts from Bleed The Fifth's resonance.

There’s really no fucking around to be had here. Dino and Tim have created a deliberate, hyper-tight speed machine, and they waste little time in showcasing its strength; it’s obvious that they’re out to prove something. The opening track shows that the awe-inspiring tandem of Yeung’s feet and Cazares’ right hand is so fluid and intuitive that you’d think the two men had shared the same womb. If you thought the Cazares/Herrera marriage was carnage-inducing, this duo will punch though your kidneys, pull out your spine, and whip you to death with it…with atomic precision. The gate-charging brutality is only tempered by Vext’s vocal delivery, which, in all honesty, is just too damn (gasp!) metalcore-ish. And that’s fine, I suppose, but the delivery of his harsh vocals remains fairly static throughout. Dude is wicked pissed, undoubtedly, but his profanity-laced, tough-guy diction lacks the death metal bite that is needed to punctuate this type of assault. There are countless times that this record shatters the needle on the heaviness meter, and if only Vext had some sick, looooooooow death rumblage in his repertoire, this band could trigger seismic shifts. Instead, some of his core-ish vocal cadences leave much to be desired, especially on lyrically-challenged cuts like “This Threat Is Real”.

However, his powerful clean choruses are nothing short of awesome (what, you thought this thing wasn’t going to follow the FF formula?), especially in the heart of the album. Those four cuts, “Impossible Is Nothing”, “Savior Self”, “Rise of the Scorned”, and “False Gospel”, all shockingly delicious diatribes of defiance, play to his strengths as a singer with their monolithic hooks. He’s got the pipes, the problem is that he just doesn’t have his own personality yet. Hordes of pretenders out there would sell their worthless souls to have Vext’s talent, but at the end of the day, he just sounds like an amalgamation of Burton C. Bell and Howard Jones. Credit must be given, though…he’s stepping to the plate in a big way on this debut album.

And a debut it is, folks. Even though it sounds exactly how you thought it would, the finished product is a tad underwhelming. This is not only due to Vext’s performance, but also the fact that there are at least two songs on here that are total clunkers…and this is among a few numbers that are just kinda there. Despite the players’ storied history, the fact that this is their first time writing together should not be lost on anyone. When pregnant with this much hype from fans and mega-labels alike, the ensuing birth is almost always a bit of a letdown, so it’s best to keep some perspective. There have been some sick seeds planted here, not only in regards to Dino’s newfound affection for actual guitar solos. There’s some undeniably FF-style cyber-bombs that pop up from time-to-time that are sure to moisten the eye of any longtime fan, and hopefully we'll see more of these in the future. And regardless if this material is metallically profound, it has an inherent Kataklysm-like quality to it that is sure to own some souls live. With the recruitment of death metal journeyman Joe Payne to fill the bass slot, these songs are absolutely, totally, 110% goddamn guaranteed to cave some chests in when jacked from some Marshall stacks. So buy a ticket, enjoy the ride, and decide for yourself…but it’s pretty damn obvious that we’ve got a Dying Fetus/Misery Index situation on our hands, and we all know how that story is playing out.

This isn’t Demanufacture by any means, but it certainly pisses all over freaking Transgression. Take the power back, D-Man. It’s good to have you around.

They have a new song out, which is sounding amazing, personally I didn't really mind Vext per se, but the new guy does sound better - particularly in the clean sections, though similar 'screaming' wise. Sound pretty much like a natural progression from this album, which is no bad thing at all. The drums are amazing, yeah Yeung is known for his speed, but I think it's unfair to suggest he doesn't utilize a fair amount of groove too within those hyperspeed paramaters.

*and it takes a musician's stand point to understand that* Oh man, I'm not even going to comment on how wrong you are.. I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years.. it's true that musicians tend to hear some subtilities that others would othewise have missed.. but it doesn't always apply. *Tim yeung is the fastest drummer in the world ! IN THE WORLD* and ? does that make him more interesting to hear ? absolutely not.. I've heard a lot of fast and consistent drummer.. but in the long run most of them are just boring and uninspired to hear. You'd be surprised at some drummers on youtube.. a lot of them are less fast but much more groovy and interesting to watch/hear. *Vext is a good vocalist* Half says he is, the other half says he's not.. vocals are a personal taste. Can't really argue if he's good or not.. you can say that YOU think he's good, but to say that HE IS good, it's there that people have a problem with. *Death metal isn't the same anymore* You aren't digging deep enough.. there's lot of band that are old-school and very good at it. The only things that have changed is the production.. and other the years it's just normal that it becomes better. You won't find bands that have the 80's and 90's sound anymore.. but you will certainly find bands that plays in the spirit of those years. You know what's bothering me in this decade ? Is that most people are shadowed by what is "FAST" .. They see a fast drummer.. wow he's the best.. they see a fast guitarist, wow he's also the best (i.e. Rusty Cooly).. and so on.. being amazed by everything fast and labeling fast as good has become the trend lately.. man that sucks.

I agree with Adam . This album is great . The musicianship on this record is insane and it takes a musician's stand point to understand that . Dino is Fear Factory you idiots . Fear factory will never and i mean NEVER be the same without him . So move on . Tim yeung is the fastest drummer in the world ! IN THE WORLD . Vext is a good vocalist and anyone who wants cookie monster on their record go buy an effects processor and any one can do it . Death metal isn't the same anymore . Go back to the Altars of madness day children you could still understand Morbid Angel . Get outta my face with that crap . Don't let some little kid who started listening to metal when slipknot came out tell u what good is .

And if you've ever seen Gene Hoglan live from about 5 feet away you'd realize how unbelievable it is that man can drum like he does. They put weights on his legs for the first half of the show to SLOW HIM DOWN. i saw him with Strapping Young Lad...man it was amazing. He's bigger than Dino and moves his whole body that fast. Dino just has to stand there and move his arms, wrists and fingers.

i'm surprised Dino can move his wrist that fast, being in the physical condition he is. Then again, Gene Hoglan serves it up pretty quick as well.

Yes, we seem to have fallen into the trap of slagging each other off here again, and are ignoring the point of discussing the album.. nevermind. I didnt really like this. Dont get me wrong, I loved Fear Factory in their day (read before the sickeningly shit Demimortal), but I dont really need to hear it all again, just with better pro-tooling than they used to use. Its more brutal yes, and is obviously different in some ways, but at core, its all the same as FF did years ago. If you dont know that material though, but this, and love it dearly. The review is pretty accurate though; Im sure with a bit more character Vext could certainly be the big man of metal that half the Metalcore bands out there wish their vocalists were. And this did make me listen to my old Fear Factory CD's too.. just then the bit left off is where I returned thsi to HMV brought the new High on Fire CD instead.

All you fools who bash this album..........its nice you can form an opinion and all but maybe if you actually knew what it takes to create music you might realize that the band is pretty goddamn in your face! From a musicians point of view all who bash this band should go suck the biggest cock they can find and choke because apparently they know nothing about REAL music. Try to make your own album and see how pathetic it is. Its something new and people like to pass judgment before they even understand what they are bitching about.

I really like this album. Listened to it a couple times today for the first time. It's very straight forward, in your face, death-ish metal. My only problem is DIno. He can play the guitar rather well, but my god he needs to shut the fuck up already!! Noone cares what Fear Factory is or isn't doing now. Who gives a shit if they're supposedly just rippin off his style with their newer stuff, they haven't said one thing back to him really and Dino shoots off his mouth about it every chance he gets. And not to mention this new singer's clean vocals sound a hell of a lot like Burton C Bell of FF...coincidence? I think not. As far as the album goes though, i do really like it, and despite alot of trash talk towards him, i think the vocalist is actually really good at what he does. Pretty solid effort, i'm definitely interested in hearing how they'll progress on their next album.

The one mp3 I heard the vocalist did not sound as bad as you guys make him out to be. He's not really all that good but he's not terrible either. I don't think it's his screaming voice that is bad but the cleans have no feeling at all.

I think the scores are fair, too. And People, the singer's not that bad. Are you just pissed he's not a death metal vocalist? Dino got the guy he wanted. And he's new, so there's room to grow on the next album. This is heavier than the last 3 FF albums combined (even though I really dug Archetype). If you long for the days of Demanufacture, this is something to at least look into. And Chud, if FF created metalcore, how can Dino rip HIMSELF off?

Never had high expectations for this, so for me it's OK. There's less metalcore in here than most of you try to tell, but not much death metal either. This band ain't sloppy, hey, far from that, but can't say that it's really technical. Modern metal, that's it. However, now I'm kinda intrigued what's gonna be next. Vocalist is OK, production is fantastic. Scores are fair. What else can I say?

This is crap. I can't believe how crappy this album is. I bought it this morning, brought it home, and was entirely dismayed. The drums sound like a chimpanzee dancing on a typewriter, and Tommy Next sounds as if he needs to take a dump and can't make it to the pot. Cazares sounds OK but he is nothing groundbreaking. Splitting from FF was his mistake, and I don't even like FF. I can't believe I even bought this. Fuck I think I am going to pick up The BeeGees next time.

Extremly well written review Jordan. I couldn't agree more with what you said. Dino is back and well. I can't stop listening to this heavyness album and I dig it. I missed the good heavy rythmic guitar mixed with a crazy drummer.. Raymon and Dino we're an incredible combo but Tim and Dino destroy everything. I feel like Dino tried to push its personal limits on it to kick FF in the nuts. As for the vocal... ouch... I like it yeah but I could have been a lot better. This guy sound exacly like Howard Jones but weaker. In fact, with the brutality of the music, I would have prefer I real good screamer with a little less clean vocal but seriously this CD is beyond everything I could exept from them. It's currently one of my top of 2007 because I missed too much Dino and his impressive guitar sound. He's the master and Christian is far behind trying to copy his stuff. Let's just hope that FF will come back in force to make us forget the mistake that was Transgression...

Sounds kind of interesting. I just wish thst all these newer bands would stop with the low screamy then high melodic vocal trade-offs all the time. This is the biggest cliche in metal right now. It was kind of original 10-12 years ago, but now it's completely formula. The vocalists should just should just pick the vocal style they do best, either harsh or melodic and sing that way througout the record.

Nice line there - FF effectively hijacking Dino's musical identity. There's no doubt the guy is a superior riffer, and deserves to be back in the big league. But I think the band is gonna fall down on the vocalist. Going by the vid for the lead track, the drummer is clearly a monster, but I can only take the metal-core clean vocals in very very small doses, and he doesn't appear to have much of a range. Also dolt-headed tough guy lyrics are pretty unappealing, so another warning sign there. I'll definetely check it out, and huzzah for having Dino and DM back together (especially with FF's softening and fattening up for my most hated album ever Digimortal). Time will tell and I wish him every success.
