With Darkest Hour's new release, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, I hope that the whole "are they metal or hardcore?" debate can finally be put to rest. One listen through assures the listener that this band is squarely in the melodic death category, whether they or their fans want to believe it. Listen to the licks of opener Sadist Nation, or the marathon instrumental, Aquetis Vertunis, that closes out the album. These guys are more Dimension Zero than Hatebreed or Bane. Hell, it was even recorded at Studio Fredman, in no other town but Gothenburg. Now since that's cleared up, Darkest Hour is an American 5-piece with three albums under their belts now. The twin guitars of Kris Norris and Mike Schleibaum bring a serious dose of Swedish melody and speed to the table. The band is plenty tight, but the vocals of John Henry ruin it for me. Sounding messy, indiscernible, and overly intense, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine someone vomiting next to the mic. It's a damn shame, because they ought to be at the forefront of the American melodic death scene, but I feel that these painful vocals hold them back. Just get a little deeper (or even higher), but more clear. I even think Anders Friden would sound fine over their music, and he leaves quite a lot to be desired. Sure I may be going on and on about it, but it's the same problem that bugged me on So Sedated, So Secure (the prior album), and this band could be a colossus otherwise. Production-wise, it's loud, but not very crisp. Certainly not the best album Fredrik Nordstrom has ever produced, but good enough. Sadist Nation starts off this extravaganza with a Swedish bang, sounding more like the intense side of Gothenburg (Dimension Zero, At the Gates), than the In Flames/Soilwork side. A mid-paced chorus and crushing ending keep the song varied enough so that it doesn't blast you into a daze. The Misinformation Age is a great song with a groovy, nearly-sing-along chorus, if I could tell what the hell he's saying. There's also a solo that, strangely enough, sounds like a heavier rendition of the one in Evergrey's Recreation Day. 7 Day Lie is chock-full of memorable riffs and hooks played the way In Flames needs to remember how to do. Pretty much every song has some sick riffs somewhere, but it's a bit pointless to hit on every song and use the same old, tired comparisons. The last song I want to touch on is the ending instrumental. It's an ambitious effort at 13 minutes that pretty much touches on everything from harmonized riffs to acoustics to piano to a killer solo. With just some minor tweaking it could be a momentous affair, like condensing the first few minutes and moving the solo at 10:02 back two minutes to kick in right as the piano piece is ending. Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation is a solid release that deserves a fair listen. If you can stand the vocals, then this album ought to find a place in many a metalhead's rotation. If these guys continue to improve as they did from the previous album to this one, then Darkest Hour could be a real titan in the near future.

It's good, but it's most certainly not melodic death metal. Only fools think that. 4.5/4/5 for me. Some of the songs were really great, but there are REALLY annoying ones, like "Oklahoma," that suck out loud. Undoing Ruin is better, and I still have yet to hear their others.

I didn't like this album as much as so sedated or undoing ruin. It's still a good album though. But undoing ruin has killed all of their other projects. And Lee, they don't go around bashing other metal band and making sure everybody thinks they are hardcore. If you watched thier DVD it is said that most of them never even heard of hardcore and where into bands like in flames and cannibal corpse. What kind of bul lare you buying into?

Darkest Hour is one of the greatest fucking bands out there. If you like At The Gates, In Flames, Witchery, Soul Demise, Light This City, The Black Dahlia Murder or anything else like that, you'll love this band in an instant.

Ya I'll probably get it too, it sounded good. I just couldn't believe they had testicles that large to compare it to those bands.

I really liked "hidden Hands", and this one sounds like it's gonna be pretty righteous, but I don't think they'll ever be right up there with the Metallica of old. They definitely won't be doing anything as influential as Slaughter of the Soul. I'm definitely going to buy undoing ruin, even though their not doing anything totally unique or groundbreaking, their new album sounds really promising.

I've seen a comercial for Undoing Ruin. It looks good as hell, probably Darkest Hour's best. But, I really don't think it'll touch Ride The Lightning. As a matter of fact, I don't think any modern metal is capable of being as good as any of Metallica's 80's material.

Has anyone seen the preview for the new cd, undoing ruin? sounds good but they're claiming the greatest cd of the decade and also comparing their albums significance to metallica's "ride the lightning" and at the gates' "slaughter of the soul". sounds a little pretentious to me.

These guys are the shit, insane dual guitar assault, insane drumming, they combine all the good elements a Swedish influenced band should have. They are thrash metal, they admit it themselves on their website. It has to be metal, b/c it sure doesnt sound like hardcore to me.

Well actually metal now is more about how they look and how many "heavy" riffs ppl play and not really about the real music and the melodic stuff ... basically people just think more noise sounds heavier thus metal does suck... DH kicks ass though, I do happen to enjoy John's vocals

I'm thinking that this whole "Darkest Hour hates metal" controversy is one of those instances where an off-handed comment got all blown out of proportion. As for the vox, I can't really explain why, I just don't like his particular vocals. Damn good album otherwise.

I think they're pretty cool and am looking forward to seeing them in about a month and a half. The vokills don't bother me in the slightest, but what do I know about taste in music. That's interesting that they would rip on metal because I was reading an interview with the lead singer saying he was nervous about recording their album in Studio Fredman cuz some of their favorite all-time albums were recorded there.

I've heard of this issue, but I've never actually read the interviews or anything. Got any links? For what it's worth, I've never spent a dime on them.

Are the worst, not because of their music, but because even though they totally rip off sweedish metal they constantly go around critizing metal and making sure everyone things they are a hardcore band. I don't care how good they are, if they play carbon copy sweedish death, then they are metal. One of those don't buy on principle things. I don't see God Forbid or Shadows Fall doing that kind of crap
