When I first heard last year that Angelcorpse were reuniting and quickly working on new material for future albums, it was pretty exciting news. Among the warlike middle-tier blast beat thrash/death metal bands, they’ve delivered a solid if somewhat unspectacular slew of albums that include some deadly tracks such as “Into The Storm Of Steel”, “Reap The Whirlwind”, “Stormgods Unbound”, “Consecration”, and “Soulflayer”, and are known to be a bulldozing live act when they set their minds to it. As a fan, I have no major problem with Angelcorpse and will continue to support them, but as both a fan and a critic, I’d have to say Of Lucifer And Lightning is not the conquering return I was expecting. Not even close.

There’s a difference between a ‘classic sound’ and a rehash, and unfortunately much of the half-hearted material on this album sounds like Angelcorpse merely reaching back and picking up leftover scraps from the cutting room floor of their past two studio albums and refurbishing them, topping it all off with an amazingly flat mix, and a phoned-in kind of execution. As opposed to a more primitive but cavernous sound as found on Mayhem’s Ordo Ad Chao, the production reminds me of the muddy mess of Morbid Angel’s Heretic with music that follows those same lines of bland incompletion.

As far as highlights go, “Extermination Sworn” has a pretty nasty swarm of riffs going on at the beginning just before the vocals kick in, and the midsection solo has a drugged-out sort of feel to it with a really wicked lumbering riff floating just beneath, but the tune just falls apart in a weird cluster of muddled, crawling rhythms before eventually getting back on track to end the tune in good form. “Saints Of Blasphemy” also trudges through an excellent extended doom breakdown of sorts, marking one of the rare moments where the sludgy production serves to enhance rather than detract, and the faster parts of “Thrall” are an effective counterpoint to the rumbling midpaced rhythms that dominate the rest of the song.

The problem is I can‘t highlight a single track off this disc that I‘d call ‘great’, and there are way too many parts that sound identical to past albums. John Longstreth’s performance contains no fire, almost like an afterthought, Pete Palubicki’s normally chaotic solos are toned-down and seem hastily improvised, usually ending up drowned out in a torrent of clouded rhythms. Helmkamp’s vocals remain unchanged since last we heard from him, in a way it only adds to the dated feel of this album, and it really surprises me that a band filled with perfectionists would be satisfied putting out such a going-through-the-motions product.

While I haven’t given up the hope that Angelcorpse can still deliver the goods, Of Lucifer And Lightning could possibly be looked upon as their least favored full-length studio album when it’s all said and done. It sounds too rushed and pieced together, or just mundane overall, and the lack of promotional push really hasn’t helped their case any. I’ll always be a fan, and that cover is pretty cool, but I’ve been sitting here with my import copy for a while now wondering if loyalty and nostalgia is enough to warrant keeping something that feels like a well-dressed demo.

what are you guys talking about ??? this album by angel corpse rules supreme,,,it is what i would think the end of the world sounds like,,,well i guess you can't please everyone,,but i have to say this album is way better than the hammer of gods however not quite as god as exterminate,,,,you can feel it is very similar to the inexorable,,,,still this album has it own charm ,,,if you think about it every album angel corpse has put out is somewhat different and at the same time you can tell it is angelcorpse, i mean that dirty sound and the wall of infernal riffs coming at you are definitely angelcorpse,,in this new album of lucifer..the same thing it is different that previous works but holds its own,,and still rules supreme,,,,,, pure satanic death metal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me ask this? what Angelcorpse album has had good production? Bad production seems to go hand in hand with this band. Every release you have to wade through the muddy mix to hear the maelstrom of wicked riffs. That being said, listen to this one through headphones loud, repeatedely and this sucker will sink in. give it a chance. it is actually pretty good.

I'm going to load these tracks into my recording software, run them through some mastering and and EQ plug ins, and see if i can't make something out of this blandfest. It's just criminal how flat and lifeless this production is. I did the same thing years back with Morbid Angel's "Heretic", only I didn't have as good a set-up as I do now. I got a lot more milage out of that album once I gave it some testicles and some spackle, and left the filler tracks out of the remix. It's good practice if you're into recording and mixing. The only downside is you can't seperate the individual instrument tracks and work with them on that level. You have to work with the mix as a whole. These are good songs and deserve to be done justice by the mix.

Oh cmon. The production on "Hammer of the Gods" was way worse. I mean the band actually went in and RE-RECORDED it - that bad it was. That said, this album surely has a weird production, but it fits. Some songs are your basic filler (with the B-Side being way more bland than the A-Side- just like "extreminate" was), but the first 4 cuts are the instant classics. This album is a grower big time. Unlike Nile's latest.....

The last time I saw and Angel Corpse album they had some stupid liner notes about a guitar part being recorded in the darkened tombs of the shrine of the fallen one or some such crap. What a shock, they still suck.

All said, I agree with this review, and I'm what you could call a huge AngelCorpse fan. I think the main thing that hurts this album is the production. It's easily the worst the band has had, and is of great detriment to every aspect of the album. Also, Longstreth's performance is surprisingly lackluster, considering the other albums he has done recently. The drumming is nowhere near as good as Tony's was on "The Inexorable". The songwriting, though, is where this band still has their act together. I still think this band is in the top tier of death metal when it comes to the actual music. It's just unfortunate that the drumming and production weren't better this time around, because this album would have been elevated from good to fucking spectacular.

Was expecting more, but I still enjoyed the album. Was surprised by the low quality production. Not "raw", just lacking attention to detail. Live on the other hand, they DESTROY. Too bad they didn't tour with Longstreth or Tony L.

Indeed. Was happy to see they were back, and loved the cover art, but first few bits I heard were pretty average. Ah well, not heartbroken or anything.

@Deadalus That last sentence is just so lame, laughing my pants off, fucking moron. About Angelcorpse, it's pretty decent but indeed the production sucks.

i thought this album was killer. The production might be off but would you rather it be over produced? AngelCorpse (in my opinion) is better served raw. For those minions who hunger for bloody holy war, prepair yourself, a new nation is rising. 666
