Album Review

Score 9.3

Synopsis:

For those that don’t know, Darkest Hour were releasing At The Gates melodic styled death metal as far back as 1996, while in their teens when most current metalcore bands were in Hot Topic Diapers. Though 2001’s So Sedated So Secure put them on the Victory Records map, it was 2003’s Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, released at the height of metalcore’s explosion that saw the band blow up. And while 2005’s Excellent Undoing Ruin was the band’s most mature and experimental release, Deliver Us sees the band improve and re-invent themselves once again with a return to the guitar based, riff driven, solo filled, more straight forward sounds of their more melodic death metal/thrash roots.

Review:

Deliver Us starts with a bang in the form of the magnificent opening track, “Doomsayer (The Beginning),” arguably the band's strongest track in years, with a just a delectable main riff and mid song solo that’s to die for. It’s like the band is giving a huge fuck you to all the metalcore pretenders and saying ‘THIS is how you write a fucking At The Gates based metalcore song, fuckers”.

From there out, the next 10 tracks show a band at the very height of their skills and awareness of their roots and the era's current status quo. While, say, Light This City can thrash it up with the best of them (arguably surpassing Darkest Hour for some time), Darkest Hour seem able to be just a touch more adventurous and shrewdly melodic in their songwriting. The short sharp stab of “Sanctuary” is replaced by the controlled canter and chorus of “Demons,” a perfect track for the albums first single/video.

“An Ethereal Drain” and “A Paradox With Flies” see the album hit a sort of two song ‘slump’, not bad tracks, but certainly more restrained and less dynamic songs. However, after the relaxing mid album break of “The Edge of the World”, Darkest Hour tear into “Stand and Receive Your Judgement” and the incredibly developed “Tunguska” with just some killer solo work and deft time changes. The same can be said for “Fire in the Sky” and “Full Imperial Collapse”.

When the title track rolls out one of the most sumptuous solos I’ve heard in ages to close the album in stunning fashion, I realize how underrated Darkest Hour are, especially in this age of one-and-done scene hopping bands with no longevity or creativity. This is Darkest Hour’s fifth quality album and with minor tweaks to a formula they arguably brought to US metal, have stayed true to form and continued to deliver quality music while the scene ebbs, flows and bends to trends around them.

Topped of by Devin Townsend’s stirring production and John Henry’s relentless rasps, Deliver Us is just a strong, strong album, with less filler than Undoing Ruin, and lives by the riff. Grab this album and listen to what one of American Metal’s real originators sounds like.

I have to confess to being one of those that dismissed this band based solely on their metalcore tag. However, this review and the accompanying positive lashes made me genuinely curious about it. This past weekend, I ran across this album at my local Hastings for six bucks (part of some Victory Records promotion), so I picked it up. This is a very solid album, one that I wouldn't be disappointed with had I paid full price for. I can understand some of the confusion regarding what genre Deliver Us falls into. To these ears it seems to fall somewhere between straightforward metalcore and melodic death metal. The musicianship is first rate. I can concur with the statement that the album "dips" in intensity a bit after the killer opening, but not enough to lose the listener's interest. Even so, it picks up speed again in the latter half. This disc has remained in my stereo since I purchased it . Well worth a listen.

awesome album. i really don't find anything metalcore about it. in my opinion, now a days, theyre playing better melodeath than in flames, soilwork or any of the melodic legends. not bashing those bands of course, but most of em have gotten worse over the years. darkest hour just keeps getting better.

BORING. It has moments, but over all its the same lame, a 14-year-old-wrote-it riffage. the solos are good, but the songs are not at all memorable, just generic metalish-rock. the whole bar chorus bar chorus thing is stale. Mall-Core indeed. I tried to like this, but good god, is this what passes for almost a 6-6-6 score? Honestly?

Album by far is one of the best around. By far this transcends into being an album without a lot of filler and never leaves you bored. The songs are innovative and full of life. I really like the feel they give of the 80's evolved solo and vast upgrade given to Henry's lyrics. To all you kids who can't handle innovation and maturity, grow up. You guys act so unappreciative when a band drops a story of an album on you with its unique and sticking sound. Do you know how many bands you listen to have no coherency in the sound of an album song by song?

" looks like someone dug Pig Destroyer's artwork." I believe they had the same artist...and the albums came out close to each other, so I don't think it's a matter of them digging PD's artwork, ha. (Their's is better anyway) I'm pretty sure this is going to be my album of the year. "Doomsayer," and, "Deliver Us," kick all kinds of ass. Since I've given the album plenty of time to sink in, I've definitely enjoyed it more.

Killer CD. Better than their previous album Undoing Ruin in a lot of ways... more progression, more Dark Tranquillity influence, and more thrash. Still though.... I find that So Sedated So Secure stands up as their best release to date.

It's got a lot more mid-paced songs, and I wish it had some more fast ones, but it's a really mature sounding record. So far, it's my favorite from them, but it's not quite mind-blowing. Still, a solid record with some amazing lead work. 8.5/10

I agree with alot of the comments out there about catagoris(z)ing music...As far as I'm concerned, Darkest Hour is Metal. Some metal beats your ears about more than others but at the end of the day, it all boils down to the heavy tone of the guitar. Darkest Hour is not candy pop....its metal...

DH have been to my very small city in Australia twice in a year and played like there was 2,000 people and not the 150 eager fans that were actually there ... They play great thrash inspired stuff, no boring karate aerobic breakdowns, just shredding riffs and leads and a drummer and vocalist that just don't give in for the whole set. I respect them for what they do, not what GENRE they fall into ... If more people did the same, most of the lame 'tit for tat' lash comments wouldn't be below ... PLUS why the fuck are you reading a DH review if don't like them ???

It's unbelievable how people can't respect others taste in music.. Seems that most people don't understand the logic behind the "there's a public for every kind of music" .. and certainly for every band, even when they're crap to our ears.. yeah, it's something most people can't comprehend since they don't have any form of respect for others. Good review. I love this band and even though I only bought this album last night, I'm listening to it like crazy and I think it's amazing. I've always loved Henry's vocals because he's got such a vicious snarl, and contrary to a lot of people it seems, I really like his addition of "clean" vocals, because unlike similar bands of this style, they don't sound perfect and polished; they sound raw and that's what's best about them in context to the band. The instrumentation on this album is flawless, and Townsend's production really brings it out. These dudes really stick to their guns, and they fucking slay. Always loved their appreciation for melody also, it goes a long way to making their songs memorable. Another person on here asked which part of this album is hardcore. I was also thinking the same. If DH and this album must have a label, it's a mix of melodic death and thrash. Even though they have a lot of metalcore fans, I don't associate it them with that genre. There's no mosh parts either, which is a classic trait of metalcore. If you want to hear a good band of that style though, listen to new August Burns Red album 'Messengers', it is awesome.

Please, for everyone's sake, leave your lash on the album and forget about adding a demeaning prefix to someone's alibi. If you want to argue with someone by all means go for it, but it is boring and redundant to see moron in front of all of your lashes upon someone else's review. That is all.

I've listened to this all the way through 3 times since I bought it yesterday, and it is really a great album. just like Erik said, the solos are awesome, the songs are packed with killer riffs, and the production makes this fucker kick! Any moron that calls Darkest Hour metalcore is pretty much retarded. Killswitch Engage, who I like and don't give a goddam what anyone says, is metalcore, As I Lay Dying is metalcore, Unearth is metalcore, Darkest Hour is not metalcore my friends. Reno2: You are a moron. Just because another band's album is heavier, does not make it more metal, or better,...dumbass. Why, is that music can't just be music? Mallcore, Metalcore, brootal bree bree core? Does it fucking matter? I say this, because it just isn't seen as music anymore, it as seen as a way to categorize and push aside good music by a stupid label. The new darkest hour is great in my opinion, and they are passionate people making good music, they are just trying to be themselves, and I personally feel like it is degrading for someone to just completely destroy for it being associated with something else. All of it is music just the same, no matter what type or genre, it shouldn't be lumped, it should just be seen as good music or not...this is all my opinion...not directed towards anyone.

ive only heard the two singles off of their myspace so far, but as far as i can hear, they need to avoid clean vocals at all cost. The song demons is ruined by his half assed attempt at singing, and making it sound like more of a grumble than a growl if they werent intending perfectly clean vocals. I dunno, after hearing that, im a lot more wary of picking the album up, i guess ill just have to spend more time previewing it at the store or something.

I have not heard this disc yet, but i'm not too excited about it because Undoing Ruin was a big disappointment for me. Darkest hour's politically tinged lyrics and hardcore/punkish stylings were always what appealed to me about them. Undoing Ruin was a sweedish metal clone without any of the passion or intensity. It's lyrics were sterotypical and not nearly as exciting or relevant. Overal, I just felt they had lost something profound. I hope this release is better, but it does not sound like it.

i'm so much dumber for reading all the stupid shit you guys say about this record. It's metalcore! It's thrash! blah, blah, blah. No wait, it's hardmetalthrashcore! I loved music when there was no Internet. You didn't have all this stupid crap...if you liked it, you just listened to it. Example: if Exodus released say "impact is imminent" today, no one would listen to it, because, while they had a killer guitar tone, the songs were lacking. But, in yesteryear, when it was released, you listened to it, because you died by your favorite bands. Exodus was one of them, and now that album holds a special place in my heart. If you're a true fan of any band....you have to move with them. If they take chances, they are banking on the fact...hopefully...that you will take that chance with them. That's what's called being a fan. So, I will worship this album amongst the din of the crap you guys worship, like Cephalic Carnage...their new album blows...straight up. Done.

man the reason why i like darkest hour is that their lead guitarist actually studied how to play the way the hardcore shreddites of shrapnel records did. that's with a metronome, if any of you metalcore tools are paying attention. but this is a good album, with melodies that make me go "hmm!" when i pick up the axe rather than i figured out how this riff was played before i put my fingers down. easily the pinnacle of a moribund genre.

For the most part I completely agree with this review that this album is great, but for a few different reasons. The first is that I initially looked at Darkest Hour as a mediocre "metalcore" band. Until now. I see this cd as the reawakening of Darkest Hour, as it seems they have finally have a firm grasp over their strengths and they pour them into this highly inventive album. The great thing about this album though, is that they use these strengths and take a risks and a big step forward towards fully developing their sound. It works extremely well, and I'm very pleased to finally be able to accept Darkest Hour as a bad I can wholesomely enjoy. I should mention that I disagree with Erik in that I think the song "A Paradox With Flies" is not a slump on the album, but rather a creative leap for Darkest Hour. The chorus on that song is simply pure excellence. If you're someone like me who had difficulty getting into this band in prior experience, question them no more. This album is a great leap forward for Darkest Hour, and will most certainly be a definitive album in their career. A great listen no matter who you are.
