Synopsis:

So here’s a brief and very general history lesson. The term “Varangian” is a general term for ‘barbarian’ or ‘Viking’ used by the people in Eastern Europe (namely the Byzantine Empire, Russia and the Ukraine) to describe the Scandinavians that sailed down the Dnieper river and settled in cities such as Kiev and Constantinople. Eventually the Emperor of Constantinople, distrusting of his own soldiers, enlisted these Viking warriors into “The Varangian Guard” as his own personal bodyguards. And what better act than Finland’s Turisas to tell a tale of these nomadic warriors? (for a more detailed, and far more detailed, step by step lesson on each track of the album, I highly recommend you visit http://www.thevarangianway.com/ for an incredibly well done and illuminating ‘tour’ of the album).

Review:

With Battle Metal, Turisas released arguably one of the most over the top and epic Viking metal albums ever, mixing the synths of Bal-Sagoth with the driving power metal of Ensiferum and the Viking tones of early Moonsorrow. Well, with album number two Turisas have cranked up the epic notch to ‘11’ and delivered what I can only term as a ‘Viking metal rock pop opera’.

With far more orchestration, more choirs , more clean singing and far more pomp, The Varangian Way isn’t quite as full on ‘metal’ as its predecessor, and that may disappoint some (as it did me initially), however the sheer, tangible grandiosity of the band’s conceptual delivery of their fictionalized account of the Varangians is just too epic to ignore.

At times, even I will admit, Turisas simply cannot be taken seriously, and with their even more grandiose approach, I can picture this being on Broadway with fur clad Vikings bursting into song on a lavish set due to the abundance of clean singing and palpable moods for the songs to convey each chapter of the story (i.e. “To Holmgard and Beyond”, “A Portage to the Unknown”). However, the raspier, more urgent metal is still present in tracks like “Cursed Be Iron”, “Fields of Gold” and “Five Hundred and One” though still almost overwhelmed by the band's heavy handed extraneous elements. Plus there seem to be some odd injections of almost experimental instrumentation that didn’t quite fit the whole Viking theme (“The Dnieper Rapids”). However, personal favorites the jigtastic “In the Court of Jarisleif”, and uber epic and choral  closer “Miklagard Overture” still brought a tear to my eye and a tightness to my cod piece.

For all its grandeur and deep story line, I can’t shake the thought of Andrew Lloyd Webber making The Varangian Way a Broadway musical and truth be told, it’s just not as rousing as Battle Metal. Still though, it’s a guilty, chainmail pleasure that makes me smile and want to paint my face like Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

Well said, fightingmike. These guys have an amazing stage charisma that you can't help but love. I"m not really sure if I like this one more of less then battle metal though. I've listened to both albums a ton but i'm not really sure which one gets the edge. Just buy both, I suppose, their both great.

I love this record more and more and after seeing them the other night at the Paganfest shows, i absolutely love this band!!! This is super epic and, while not as heavy or technical as say Ensiferum, the songwriting here is excellent and the atmosphere created here takes you on a journey and i love it. Much better overall than Battle Metal.

Fuck I hate when this happens! Disregard my prior review pleeeease! I have been spinning this album for days now! I dont know what happens but the album just came alive for me, but when I first heard it for a few times, I just didnt get it. Now everything seems to perfectly fit together, so fuck me runnin man, seriously this album is still not as good as Battle Metal and it could be a bit longer, but as far as I am concerned from here on out, this album is fuckin masterpiece. Wow sorry for the quick accusations, I will atleast listen to album for a week before I start hitting the keys! They are just way beyond my musical comprehension is how I would like to conclude this editorial.

After living Battle Metal for quite some time, I decided to move on to The Varangian Way for somemore glorious viking warfare. For some odd reason, it wasnt present in this album. It felt as though Turisas decided to mix a more traditional modern sound with some soundtracks from the latest Disney movie. I love viking cheese, but the church sounding choirs, overabundance of clean vocals, and as mentioned, the orchestra that could have done The Lion King really ruined the album for me. Dont get me wrong, there are some wonderful shining moments in the album, but unfortunately these are few and far between. The one thing I loved about Battle Metal is the intensity of the horns and riffs blending together to create this epic fury that unfolds throughout the album. As Erik T said in his review of BM is that it makes you want to put on some armor, grab a sword, and fight to the death! This is what intrigued me some much about the band. Hopefully there next effort will be back to their roots, because this is what made Turisas so great in the first place. Im not sure what they were thinking with this album, as a majority of it sounds nothing like BM, and if I hadnt heard BM before, I would think it wasnt even the same band. So disappointed, wont give up yet unless there next album sinks any lower.

The broadway thing. Holy shit, that's funny. My girlfriend said the exact same thing. And she did a mock monkey dance that totally cracked me up. You can so picture it. I have to say Amon Amarth are way better than these guys. You can't tell me that after listening to "Cry of The Blackbirds", that you don't want to pick up a sword and run into battle. Attaaaaaaaaaaaacccccccckkkkkkkk.

This album is pretty good, like their debut. Sometimes their music reminds me of a mix of Ensiferum with Bal Sagoth keyboards. Turisas isn't one of the best viking bands out there, but they're decent and have potential to do even better things one day.

That's a foolish comment to make. I don't know about these guys but Amon Amarth are anything but boring.
