Album Review

Though Behemoth have long been darlings of both underground metalheads and their more mainstream counterparts, I never quite understood the hype around them. Though Nergal and company obviously have talent coming out their ears and have been pumping out solid black/death metal for near a decade, I have never been quite convinced that they entirely deserve their spot at the forefront of the Polish metal scene. With the constant lauding of 2004’s Demigod and multiple reports of the band’s crushing live show, I figured it was time to give these boys another go. I’m glad I did; The Apostasy has duly impressed me, though I’m not quite sure I’ll be joining Behemoth’s legion of slavering devotees any time soon.

Though Behemoth made a name for themselves first as a black metal band and then as a blackened death troupe, The Apostasy completes their gradual shift into a comparatively straightforward death metal act. Though the band has retained their Matrix/leather daddy/Pinhead from Hellraiser look and the traditional black metal lyrical preoccupation with Satan and the occult, the black metal element has largely been erased from their sound. Aside from a few spiraling, Dissection-y tremolo riffs in “Inner Sanctum” and “Christgrinding Avenue,” all but the window dressing of their black metal roots (the outfits, a few keyboards and scattered choral segments) has been purged. In their place is a controlled but icily intense selection of darkly melodic death metal riffing. Even Nergal’s vocals sound different; though the production is otherwise just as massive and lush as it was on Demigod, his vox are far less layered. Though the straightforward death metal bellow he relies on for most of the album is certainly adequate, it’s not quite as distinctive as his previous approach.

That’s okay though, because one thing The Apostasy isn’t short on is catchiness. “At the Left Hand ov God,” “Kriegsphilosophie,” and “Arcana Hereticae” are all immediate-gratification sandstorms featuring both rigidly precise drum assaults from Inferno and twisting, serpentine Eastern riffing, while the aforementioned “Inner Sanctum” (featuring a brief Warrel Dane of Nevermore guest performance) and “Christgrinding Avenue” come closest to the epic sweep of Behemoth’s earlier days. These songs generally rely on a blend of dexterous high-speed guitar salvos and dramatic, synth-flocked slowdown grooves that often feature some rather…shall we say…Ithyphallic-sounding extra instrumentation, though they generally also stay within the three-to-five minute range. This saddles Behemoth with an unusual problem: they sound like a toned-down, more accessible version of fellow Ozzfest vets and tourmates Nile. Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Both bands certainly have their own merits; though Nile is definitely a more intense and uncompromising group, they lack Behemoth’s sense of hooky groove as well as their crushing live presence.

Though all but the most anti-commercial death metal fans will find something to like on The Apostasy, whether these guys deserve their massive following is still up in the air for me. Though I can’t deny the appeal of these tracks, there also seems something innately derivative about them. Maybe it’s the Nile-ish guitar work or the retreat into the well-tread realms of death metal, but Behemoth seem to me to be a band whose popularity and live spectacle have outstripped the growth of their distinctive musical voice. I know most of you will disagree with me here, but something tells me that these guys haven’t really delivered the extreme metal epic they’re capable of yet. Color me impressed, but I’m still not blown away.

I'm gonna have to say that Behemoth is a pretty awesome band to see live. Saw them on Mayhem with Slayer and others. Personally I thought Slayer did worse than even Manson. But as far as Behemoth went, kicked ass over almost all the other bands there. CD is okay, their bigger hits are good, but the ones that didn't get noticed, there was a reason for it.

Very well written review but I feel the songwriting score could have been atleast a 5. Although some songs on here are better than others, I do not feel that there is a weak moment to speak of, the drumming is intense (As are Nergal's vocals), the mood is dark, the lyrics/liner notes are very interesting and the album doesn't outstay it's welcome. Can't wait for their 2009 release! And by the way, Dismember shit on Entombed.

I agree with Doug Moore in that Behemoth are rather derivative and have yet to give us a true and complete masterpiece. As great as I thought this album was, it hasn't come yet. That said, these guys put so much effort into their appearance and production references (along with their music) that they are obviously serious about their craft and their message. The lyrics on this album were killer, as were the notes and quotes and every page. It was as much fun to look at as it was to listen to. Best song: without a doubt, Inner Sanctum. Great show from Behemoth.

This cd is ok on the first listen but it gets fuckin boring on the second. I sold this 2 days after buying it. A summary of this cd: No replayability, over polished, over hyped, overrated. I cannot understand the ongoing comparisons to Nile. I'm a realatively recent fan of both Nile and Behemoth, and to my ears they are little alike. Behemoth added some jazz instrumentation as opposed to Nile's traditional Egyptian instruments and sounds. How does that compare? Nile doesn't typically alter tempo as much as Behemoth has on The Apostasy. There are some mid-tempo songs here, as well as some mighty huge riffs. Both The Apostasy and Ithyphallic are fantastic albums. Both crush, but in their own ways. *shrug*

Doug, get over it. Nile and Behemoth are not the same band. Arguing this is as worthless as using the fairness doctrine to save Air America. If you think they sound similar then you honestly are not very musically estute. It makes no difference who influences who. Steve Vai states Jimi Hendrix is a big influence to him, yet they sound vastly different. But whatever dude. There is really nobody that sounds like Nile, writes about ancient Egypt, or uses Egyptian music structure when writing technical death metal songs.

Nailed's got it right. The multi-layered vocals was a fucking joke. It sounded weak and pathetic compared to the absolutely venomous vocals on Satanica. Demigod, overall, had a much weaker Behemoth sound, but they fooled around enough with the production so nobody'd notice.

I too am mystified by the comparisons of Nile to Behemoth and vise-versa... why not compare them with Orphaned Land while you're at it? Toootally different bands. Not even close in relation, save they have an eastern influence... big deal -_-. Although, back to 'The Apostasy,' this album really didn't do it for me... maybe I need to give it more time. I dug Satanica, Thelema, Zos Kia and I view Demigod as Behemoth's Opus... but this album just feels empty to me. Too many empty, vocalless grooves is something I feel hurts it. And taking a step back from the vocal layering was a major mistake... Behemoth was on the forefront of this before - and it sounded incredible - to take such a massive step backward kind awed me, I think this is the reason I just can't get into this CD yet... the vocals sound so weak. The production is great, but I find at times the guitar leads (not solos, leads) get buried. And while the drumming is unbelievably fast... these songs just seem to lack the intensity of a song like Nephilim Rising or Slaves Shall Serve. Too many guitar solos chalked into 4 minute songs, and his voice really doesn't suit the choir parts at all. I have yet to see where the 'catchiness' in this album is when comparing it with Zos Kia Cvltvs or Demigod.

@The Great Debate: The comparison between these two is merely the fact that they use the same modal progressions and key signatures on a lot of pieces. But the music is written so dramatically different and is executed differently too. Not to mention the whole theme and influence difference. Bugs me how people are numb to this, but that reminds me of listening to Rage Against the Machine about ten years ago with a buddy in a car. He said "wow this sounds like limp bizcuit', and i asked if it was because it was like rap/rock. He replied no, and stated that the music was the same. A very musically-ignorant answer, but I guess that's what you get for listening to that kind of shit. The Apostasy is outstanding and a very deep dive into Nergal's influences (once again thanks to the in depth liner notes). It's facinating the influence and drive these guys have translated into music. The political and societal struggle they deal with in Eastern Europe and their beliefs of the true roots of freedom and individuality are so well captured on this disk. Everything about this album is solid: 5.5, 5.0, 5.5.

Personally I never saw how so many can compare Behemoth and Nile so very closely...two completely different bands and The Apostasy and Ithyphallic showcase that fact even more for me. I'm sure there is influence from one to the other, but so what? That's music for you, metal or anything else. Either you like one or the other or both or neither one, or you don't. That's it.

Great album, my favorite of theirs and I've been listening since Satanica. It's got the tact and groove of Zos Kia and the ferocity of Demigod - a complete album, and a very well written one at that. I guess they've lost the black metal edge, but it still sounds distinctly like Behemoth. I wasn't sold on this the first half dozen times I listened, but after I smoked a fatty and gave it a spin, all the riffs started to sink in much more clearly. The drums sound just about as punchy and clear as you can get on an extreme metal recording, I can actually hear the bass, and the guitars are of course awesome. I hum this shit while I'm listening to it on the way to work. I doubt I'll hear much better than this all year. 6/6/6

"Nile is definitely a more intense and uncompromising group, they lack Behemoth’s sense of hooky groove as well as their crushing live presence." True that. I dig both bands, but I do wish from time to time that Nile experimented with some more groovy sections. I'm not saying they should do it all the time, but I think some groove with the Egyptian material could be pretty interesting. You can think it has some flaws but, just for justice, if many albums deserved a 6/6/6, so does The Apostasy. Blindly. If this mother fucker is not the death metal album of the year (for me, it' s not) is ONLY due to the new Nile, maybe Decrepit Birth releases a better album, too. Anyway, this is the best death metal album reviewed this year sooo far, wayyy better than the rest. And the scores doesn' t show it. Again, I was not a fan of Behemoth, and I am not today. I'm not a black metal fan at all, but I liked the natural "epicness" that Behemoth possessed in the past as opposed the the new Vital Remains that seemed to be trying to force the "epic" card with redundant riffs. Now that I hear they're going with a more traditional DM approach makes me even more excited about this album.

I think this album is fucking fantastic and some of the tunes will lay your ass out flat, but there is no denying the derivative aspects Doug spoke of. It does sound like Nile, and 'Inner Sanctum' could be a Nevermore track with a guest vocal from Nergal instead of the other way around. I'd probably hit a 5 for songwriting (as a fanboy), but the review is dead-on.

I'll be picking this up. BEHEMOTH are a great band that have climbed the there way to international fame by releasing solid albums and touring constantly, just as VADER has done before them and DECAPITATED are doing now. I personally like the other two bands a little more because I think their songs are more memorable, but I have nothing bad to say about the mighty BEHEMOTH. In fact, most Polish death metal rarely fail to deliver the goods. There must be something in the water over there (vodka?) that inspires quality death metal. Other cool Polish bands people should check out are MESS-AGE, CRIONICS, and LOST SOUL

Behemoth rocks yes, but I do agree that they are slightly overrated.
