After serving up what many considered to be a complete flop in the first Tim Owens fronted Iced Earth offering entitled The Glorious Burden, Jon Schaffer and company return with this pleasing little four song EP and prove that bringing in Owens – the one time Halford replacement in legendary British group Judas Priest – to replace longtime vocalist Matthew Barlow wasn’t that poor of a decision after all. Simply put, the man has got one hell of a set of pipes and that rings true throughout the four songs on this release.

"Ten Thousand Strong" is the only new song on the recording and is probably the best song penned by Schaffer since the group’s 1998 Something Wicked This Way Comes release. The track storms out of the gate with a high-pitched furious wail from Owens and sounds about as authentic of an Iced Earth tune as you’ve heard in years, merging a speedy intro and verse section, a gripping n’ galloping chorus and some vocal layering toward the end that gives me the feeling that Owens finally feels at home with the group. Even though we’re only talking about one new song here, I just get the sense that Schaffer is a revitalized man and is ready to take aim at getting back to the group’s more aggressive musical roots in his future work.

Having not read through the promo pack upon my first listen to the EP, songs two through four sounded oddly familiar, and rightfully so, as they are merely re-recordings of the "Something Wicked" trilogy ("Prophecy", "Birth of the Wicked" and "The Coming Curse") from the SWTWC album. Outside of a more tightly executed rhythm tromp between drums and guitar, the most noticeable difference amongst the three songs is the obvious insertion of Owens in the vocal department, and as much as I dislike it when bands re-record older material with new vocalists I have to admit that Owens gives the songs more energy than Barlow ever did and an intense and angered fury that, quite frankly, Barlow’s softer mannered croon could hardly deliver. Don’t get me wrong, because I think Barlow was a magnificent vocalist for the band and he and Schaffer created some fantastic music together. But let’s face it folks, Schaffer has been looking for a Halford or a Dickinson throughout his entire career, and while there has never been anyone quite resembling Dickinson’s legendary air-raid howl, Owens is about as close as he’ll ever get to Halford.

In summary, if single "Ten Thousand Strong" is any indication of the days to come for the band, then it’s a safe bet that the upcoming full-length release - that will see Schaffer continue on with his obsession with this "Something Wicked" story - will put the band back on track as one of the leaders in the American power/thrash metal scene. Even though I think a few more new songs would have better suited this EP, rather than simply re-recording tracks of old, it is a nice little tasty treat to hold the Iced Earth fans over and is probably worth your time if you’ve accepted Tim Owens into the realm.

As much as I certainly wouldnt describe myself as an Iced Earth fan, much less someone who actively gets really excited about a new release, but how is this worth the scores it got? Im all for personal opinion etc, but seriously? The new song just sounds like something I'd expect from Avenged Sevenfold - thats great if thats what you want, and that band have raped bands like IE and Maiden for their sound, with some guy wailing over the top of it. I know this kind of music doesnt really make a point of throwing around much progression, but still.. its just not really very good. Especially when considering the back catalogue these guys have. And re-recording a fan favourite with someone else playing a key part is always suicide.. surely, it would have been far more sensible to just put out some new tracks instead?

@The Great Cretaceous Bob Really wierd that about The Night of the Stormrider. Buy burnt offerings and dark saga. Both are with Barlow on vocals.

The Night of the Stormrider is boring as shit. I never thought I could be that bored by guitars. Half the album is slow as crap (and the slow parts weren't done well) and the rest has completely generic riffing. Not to mention, the entire album has a complete lack of intensity. Oh yeah, and the vocalist was really bad. I like Ripper more than that motherfucker. I've only heard Horror Show, Glorious Burden, and Night of the Stormrider, and I like Night of the Stormrider the least. Man, I was standing in the record store trying to decide whether or not to buy NotSR or Strapping Young Lad's Alien. I sure fucked that decision up.

Best drumming i've heard in an iced earth album is definately in burnt offerings. The reason that i love that album is because it is not just heavy/power or thrash/power if you like. That record contains atmospheric death metal elements also. Can not understand why Schaffer does not like that album.

The new song sucks, schaffer must have written it in five minutes, where's the old iced earth sound that i loved? The trilogy is superb, but these are not new songs, they're old.I hope that the new album will not sound like ten thousand strong.About Owens,it's not that he is a bad singer,on the contrary,it's just that Barlow was a god.

Horror Show is so good. Richard Chrisy's drumming gave this band the heaviness they needed. who plays for them now?

Vag is right about the GCB-Night of the Stormrider is excellent-I dont know what he was listening to...... New EP sounds decent....seems like ol' Eardley is going to make a few cents off every album sold. This still sounds like bad Judas Priest or Winters Bane or Beyond Fear or any other band that Owens is or has been in but it just doesn't sound like Iced Earth.................Must be that Barlow thing everyones talking about.

Hah everyone here is such a baby. Barlow is gone, it sucks, get over it. Owens is not a bad singer by any means and the stupid decision to redo the Wicked Trilogy aside, the actual single kicks ass. I wasn't overly impressed with The Glorious Burden aside from a few tracks and of course the trilogy (Jon loves fucking trilogies), but I can tell this one will be leagues better. Getting Brent Smedley (I think) back is evident in the single because the drumming is really tight and Jon actually lets him go wild for a change. Ripper sounds the same as he always had but it's alright with me, his highs are fun to listen to. And for everyone hating on Horror Show, I just can't understand that. The album is fucking heavy, aggressive, epic, and yeah there's cheese but it's an album about horror movies for fuck's sake, what do you expect? Gotta love the MetalReview lashers.

@ The Great Cretaceous Bob What the fuck ? Night of the stormrider is their best, along with Burnt Offerings. After Burnt Offerings earth's era is not that good................except dark saga maybe which is mediocre imo.

glorious burden was quite good! the new song 'ten thousand strong' kicks ass, and is virtually impossible to not sing along to. it sounds REALLY whiny when people only go on about the old singer- he's not coming back, and it doesn't matter- MOOT POINT. listen to this or don't. this thing with story concept album in power metal is getting olllld, but hopefully it won't hold iced earth back, and the songs will still be as excellent as the new one.

last i knew matt was fronting "first state force band" comprised of cops/fireman/civil service etc. lee, you are correct in stating he is in pyramaze. apparently he took over for them on vocals because it wont sacrifice his job as a police officer. ever since horror show i have needed a glass of water to help me wash down all the cheese when listening to an IE album.

i wasn't crazy about this at all. i actually like the last album, but this one is just waaayy to cheesy for me. i prefer the original versions of the songs with barlow, the new ones are kind of bland. and that other band tim owens is in, is just horrid.

matt barlow owns tim owens. if iced earthy wanted rob halford, they should have asked halford. the really high pitched-vox annoy the piss out of me and its probably why i cant listen to newer iced earth now. good riddance.

Didn't Barlow quit and become a cop or some shit? And now all the sudden he is back in Pyramaze or some shit? I honestly doubt Jon is responsible for everything. Owend kind of blows though, they entire Gettysburg album is laughable so thanks but no thanks on this.

That reminds me, I still need to buy Horror Show. That was a good album. Like a dumbass I bought Night of the Stormrider instead. Fucking worthless. Glorious Burden was alright. It had some shitty fucking songs (Red Baron/Blue Max, anybody?), but the Gettysburg songs saved it.

I loved Glorious Burden, but the new song is somewhat boring. I think Ripper's vocals are totally wrong for the Something Wicked songs, I prefer the original trilogy.

I enjoy the ep. Im glad he rerecorded the trillogy. i was impressed to see it live with tim and he is just as good on the disk. There will always be the barlow club. I loved matt other than he is boring live and blows notes. I think these coming disks will be bigger than ever.

I personally think it is an absolute kick in the face to Barlow re-recording the trilogy. Considering Shaffer will be the first to tell you he taught Barlow to sing he pretty much ripps himself for doing it as well. I am not an Owens hater but Barlow always will be the perfect voice for Iced Earth. In the end IE will never be as successful as they were with Barlow. Jon made his bed and now must lie in the fucker. Dude is the ultimate bridge burner and now the shit is coming back around on him as it always does. First track is solid, but give me Barlow's version of the trilogy any day.

The 'covers' (?) of the Something Wicked trilogy we're ball-less and pointless. The new song was laughably forgettable. Schaffer is shitting on himself.

Whaaaa? You're insane. This EP is worthless. The new song is boring at best, proving that Jon Schaffer has no new ideas left. Tim Owens also still doesn't fit the band at all. He completely butcheres (with the help of Schaffer) the Something Wicked trilogy. I can't believe you think that Tim Owens gives more energy in the vocals can Barlow did. Hahahahaha, that cracks me up. I listen to the two and it's so obvious that Matt gives a much better performance. Matt Barlow is 10 times a better vocalist than that Rob Halford wannabe Tim Owens. Matt can hit high and low notes with ease. Tim Owens can hit high notes ok, but his low notes are a disgrace and actually pretty fun to laugh at. I personally think Iced Earth are a joke now. So is this review, because you're going to make morons out there think this is a good EP. Get your head out of the toilet, flush your shit, then re-write this review, this time telling it like it is!!
