Album Review

Score 10

Synopsis:

Yes, the score is correct. Holy fuck.

Review:

I really thought that Canada’s Despised Icon could never top 2005’s The Healing Process, (one of my favorite albums of that year) but with a little line-up tweak plying the same technical death metal meets hardcore ferocity (deathcore I guess), The Ills of Modern Man surpasses its predecessor in every way.

Everything about the release is just ridiculously tight: the Yannick St-Amand production, which is better than ever; the furious vortex of grinding; squealing complexity; the thunderous grooves (I hesitate to use the word breakdowns); the dual vocals. Everything is just maxed out. On top of that, Despised Icon have, unlike similarly veined Beneath The Massacre, learned to flesh out their songs and throw in a little control amid the chaos. No, this isn’t a more commercial release, as its just as vitriolic as the last record, it's just there’s a tangible sense of improved, more memorable song writing.

While tracks like seething opener (and first single/video) “In the Arms of Perdition”, “The Ills of Modern Man”, “Nameless” and the reworked “Oval Shaped Incisions” (from their debut split with Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus) quite simply rip your face from your skull, the rest of the tracks like “Furtive Monologue”, “Quarantine”, and “Sheltered Reminiscence” and “Tears of the Blameless” while still full of slicing, ripping grinding complexity, have more focus on off kilter, methodical, angular Meshuggah-isms and truly devastating grooves (especially the crushingly stuttering persona favorite “A Fractured Hand”). The real surprise of the album though, has to be closer “Fainted Blue Ornaments”, a track with just a sick groove and gang chants that will be sure to divide fans with its epic, orchestral, dare I say melodic climax. Personally, I think it’s a brilliant stroke and one that ends an utterly searing album with a brilliant dash of introspection.

As with seemingly anything to come of Canada in this vein, the musicianship is simply unparalleled, but again, whereas Beneath the Massacre sort of blew their wad on musicianship and forgot song writing with Mechanics of Dysfunction, Despised Icon realize that musicianship is only as good as the songs being delivered.

As with anything with the word ‘core’ remotely attached (i.e.The Faceless, The Red Chord, Winds of Plague, Job For a Cowboy, Beneath The Massacre, Diskreet, etc) there will be some that simply discount Despised Icon as death metal pretenders and merely hardcore kids playing grindcore, but simply put, this stuff is just as complex and brutal as anything on Unique Leader, just without the long locks and folded arms. Brutality is brutality no matter who is playing it, and these skilled Canadians are as brutal and brilliant as it gets.

Hmm. The pig squeals are mildly off-putting on this album. I think its to do with how they're implemented into the music; it doesnt always fit the part, and other vocal styles might have worked a little better. In other places, they work absolutely fine. But then thats me. I guess you'll probably flag me up under the 'Faggot who should swallow knives for disagreeing with your opinion' column then Chris.

That is one of the worst top 10 lists I've ever seen. Those bands create noise and call it art. Just as Despised Icon does. The unbelievably slow breakdown at the end of 'In the Arms of Perdition' just about says it all. A totally freakin badass band with squeals and riffage like no other! All I can do when I hear the 'metal' that is on your list is gawk and question what the hell is wrong with music today. I almost feel compelled to call this noise/crap indie-metal. It's different, and it sucks. There's nothing intelligent behind this music. It's a bunch of stoners pretending to make music.

However, this album is a very strong release and if your a fan of -core bands or not it's worth a listen.

I loved 'The Healing Process' - easily one of the best albums of that year. And this? Just as good, if not better. Fucking awesome. To be honest, I dont really give a flying fuck about the inclusion of more beatdowns, or hardcore elements at the expense of death metal moments - for me, thsi works well due to the fact that they just seem to have pushed the songwriting levels up and everything just seems to sound that much tighter and more intuitive. Dont know if I agree with sentiments about thsi band getting worse over time. Times change, and bands progress; this band still own regardless of any new directions.

Album is kinda meh at first but it grows on you after awhile. Poor opening song choice. The breakdowns need less "ok guys now it's the breakdown everyone hardcore dance" and more just heavy groove. They're too abrupt and obvious...the reason mid/late 90's hardcore bands are heavier than all this stuff is because they knew how to do the "breakdown". All Out War doesn't write a breakdown, they just write *heavy*.

I got halfway through this album and it bored the piss out of me. Production is excellent and they are technically proficient, but even if you enjoy this type of music, you cannot give it a 6 for songwriting. It relies entirely on tired breakdowns and pseudo-Meshuggah grooves with spastic, sub-par death metal inbetween it all.

Each album they put out has less death and more core. This just seems rushed in a lot of parts. Healing Process had full songs of amazing riff after riff and very strong song structure. Some of the songs on this new one just seem to have a couple good riffs with boring shit wrapped around it. A lot of the breakdowns are mindless and the feeling and energy just isn't there. The drummer is the most standout part of this album, he really stepped it up. The song writing on this is no where near what the Healing Process was. I also don't think this album is more technical than their previous outings. I've listened to this 15 + times really trying to like it and I can't only get into about 1/3 of it. It's sad because of how much I love their prior albums and how much I've defended them against people bashing them as just a bland metalcore band and tell them that if they looked like Morbind Angel or some shit they'd probably like them. They've proved me wrong and turned into a more of a metalcore band than ever and a lot of this new album is bland to me.

The pringles remark was pretty funny, by the way. When I say songwriting, I'm referring to the music, not the lyrics. As for the squeals on this album.. they lost the power they had on the healing process... like everything else on this disc. It sounds flat. Opinions are like assholes, I just can't believe an album so mediocre gets a perfect score here. As for ripping albums to shreds... Teufels Tomb! Then went back to it after a month and listenened to it for weeks more. This one i got saturday and i feel like i've been listening to it for a week already. they chilled out on a lot of the technicality and smother you with more simple (compared to "healing..") chugga chugga riffs and.....yes: breakdowns. too many. it gets repetative. shit!! . Bummer. definately disappointing, but still bad to the muthafuckin bone. this demolishes most any other "deathcore" or whatever out there. great, kick ass album, just not a 6/6/6 in my book. Alright..this review prompted me to give this album a spin again. Three plays later, and here I am, enjoying. I think my initial gripe was just the fact that there's a lot of grooves/breakdowns in the songs. When I first heard "In The Arms Of Perdition", I was expecting more of the same. There's only ONE breakdown in that song, and I think it's very well executed; it's at the end and gives the song a sort of climactic feel. So upon first listen and not finding that sort of quality in the other songs, I was a little disappointed. I think with repeated listens, I've just come to terms with the fact that THIS is the new Despised Icon, take it or leave it. ps the production on this cd is truly fucking polished, save the (usual) lack of bass.

Solid album but as some people have already mentioned their breakdowns are pretty fucking boring. This could be improved...

I wouldn't say Master of Puppets sucks, but its definitely one of the most overrated albums of all time. Just replace "Master of Puppets" with "Rust in Peace," and then you've got a classic on your hands. Anyway, I gave this a listen due to the 6/6/6, and I'm really left confounded. I mean, it isn't bad by any means, but it doesn't differentiate itself from any other (to my ears) mediocre core release. No core hybrid release grabs me; it doesn't really sound like it has any intensity. Shit, this is mostly drums and shitty vocals anyway, which is not what I listen to music for.

I always seem to tune out this album after the first 4-5 songs. While crushing, I agree with Tyler MR's lash. I think they need to tone down on the breakdowns. Kinda a letdown in that aspect :/

So I HAVE to hear this now, due to the triple 6's. And, odds are pretty fucking good that I'll be just as disgusted with this style as I was when I chucked this band's last album into the used bin.

@ Deke: I'm also really anticipating Minus the Herd. From their myspace page it sounds a little less chaotic and theres less grindcore and more Meshuggah influence. Both Ion Dissonance and Despised Icon seem like they are trying to make more memorable songs without sacrificing their technicality and I think they both sound great. I don't really like Ion Dissonance's new vocalist as much as the old one but his voice kind of works with the less chaotic music.

um, didn't Andy Sneap mix this album? if so he is the one to credit for it sounding great. Yannick recorded it i believe.

Listened to this album and it didnt hit me as a perfect score by a long shot. Some songs are pretty killer but others just fill......... i give it 4/4/4

I am new to these guys. They are awesome. Check them out. Good review. I have found this album and the new Beneath the Massacre have filled a void that the new cryptopsy left. I was disappointed with the new cryptopsy. Both of these bands are upping the bar. Good Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Steve P.... just their breakdowns in general. i like this band a lot, so they aren't a deal killer. i just wish they would make them less... hatebreed. haha. @ Skeletor.... Assuck is totally different, but i see what you are saying. i think its because a lot of these "deathcore" kids have faux-hawks and emo haircuts and it irritates the long-hairs that these trendy idiots are trying to "steal their music." i have no problem with it though. its just another genre.

Not bad, probably something that will have to take a backseat to other new releases, and I wonder if i'll like it as much a year from now. Heavy shit though, I'll admit, but i'm honestly more curious as to what 'Minus The Herd' is going to sound like in its entirety.

I still think their first album is their best, but I like this one much more than The Healing Process...

Couldn't agree more, a fantastic follow-up. I'm a huge fan of Brutal Death Metal - Deeds of Flesh, Disgorge, Abysmal Torment and I'd definitely say Despised Icon are right up there in the heaviness stakes. I have no problem with the breakdowns myself, I think the mix of tech-savvy Death, with chugging Hardcore is quite refreshing, and works extremely well. Besides, weren't Assuck - one of the most reverred and respected grind bands ever - self confessed 'hardcore kids playing death metal'? They don't get half as much stick as these guys!

This band reminds me and it's a cross between England's Stampin Ground and Dying Fetus (especially the death/grind vocals) with a little Dillinger Escape Plan thrown inside. Good stuff but sometimes gets boring, judging by their previous "The Healing Process".

I've only heard their one new song on their myspace and at first I didn't like it but then I found it to be much more memorable than most of the previous stuff upon only a couple of listens. If I didn't like this band enough now that they use more Meshuggah-isms as part of their repertoire, and with this great review I really can't wait to pick this up. @Tyler: For me I always thought that Despised Icons breakdowns were different from most deathcore bands so do you mean you found the breakdowns on this cd or just most of their songs in general to be typical? Either way I still think that this band stands out in the deathcore crowd.

my ONLY complaint is the breakdowns. there are too many and they are too hardcore. Ion Dissonance has lots of breakdowns, but they are totally whacked out and heavy as shit. DI's are more in the typical, Hatebreed vein. the rest is pretty damn good though, but i'd probably hit a 5 on songwriting.
