Album Review

Score 8.3

God has really done it this time! I don't know what he did, but whatever it was, it sure pissed off the guys in Vital Remains. In an act of revenge, they've returned the favor by releasing a blasphemous beast of an album, Dechristianize - sure to end up on at least a few top 10 lists. It seems that whenever I buy a death metal album, there's somebody in the group shot sporting a Vital Remains shirt (Vader - Revelations, Hate Eternal - King of All Kings, etc.). I was unfamiliar with VR, so naturally I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about. What I found was standout, brutal death metal with enough captivating twists and turns to keep me interested. As most of you have already heard, Glen Benton (Deicide...duh) is handling the growling duties, and he does so in a vicious, guttural fashion. Even more impressive is the stellar guitar work by Tony Lazaro. While the speedy riffs are competent, Lazaro shines when he slows the pace, and breaks out unexpectedly intriguing leads. Dave Suzuki is a man possessed behind the kit with some of the fastest blasts I've ever heard. The production is surprisingly clear for brutal death - crisp guitar tone, the drums aren't overpowering, and Glen's barking is right up front. In today's metal world, every band feels the need to throw in silly little intros with no added value to the album as a whole. Let the Killing Begin is NOT one of those intros, in fact, it sets the anti-religious mood quite nicely, leading right into the outstanding title track. Clocking in at a stout 8:56, Dechristianize(the song) is an epic powerhouse. The slowed-up middle sections contain the most haunting and fitting leads this side of Nile. Devoured Elysium follows the same formula, mixing crushing brutality with demonic mid-paced breaks. This is actually the shortest song on the album, at 5:46, not counting the intro. Not content with a hit-and-run, Vital Remains is backing up the truck a few times to make sure you're crushed completely. Entwined By Violence pushes the epic bar up even higher over the course of its 10 full minutes. Powerful riffs, machine-gun blasts and fills, devilish grunts, and is that an acoustic guitar I hear? Now I'm not a regular enthusiast of the brutal side of death metal, but if it were all this good, I'd be forced to reconsider. There's nothing but solid metal to be found here, and I have a hard time believing that the death metallers of the world aren't going to love this. Killer!

Been on a Vital Remains binge over the last couple days. I've listened to Dechristianize a good dozen times (pretty sure I've listened to the title track alone close to 40 times) and dug into Icons of Evil as well (I agree, Scorned is an incredible song). Listened to a little bit of Dawn of the Apocalypse as well. I'll have to check out some of their early stuff, just been loving Dechristianize and Icons way too much lately

I just heard this for the first time. And yeah some parts are overly long, but i friggin love the title track. And you gotta admit, you are hard pressed to find better overall musicianship anywhere. im not insanely fond of the vocals, but hey, they work. I like to listen to the music anyways. most of the time i just skip to dechristianize. I like that it repeats cuz that means i wont have to go back and start the song over again.which i still end up doing. too long? yes. boring? i didnt think so. 4/5/6 in my opinion.

I thought the repitition on 'At War with God' and 'Devoured Elysium' were beneficial, if not necessary to those particular songs as a whole. However, I'll admit 'Dechristrianize' and 'Entwined by Vengeance' were over the top. Still, the album is bludgeoning me and my entire dorm in the wee hours of every Sunday morning. The review scores were accurate, too, although I probably would have dropped the production a bit. Epic Death Metal.

Vital Remains Rule, but like Deceased they suffer from not knowing how to end a song. They just keep going & going. Still this CD Kicks Ass and was one of the best CDs to come out in 2003. Dave Suzuki is so damn talented handling all the lead guitars as well as Drums! Glen Benton is good but no one touch their old vocalist Jeff Gruslin. I highly recommend this one!

I agree with Prometheus--while I enjoyedparts of the album, and the musicianship is hard to fault, the songs are just too damn long and boring. Overall, I was expecting a better (or at least, more engaging) listen. 5/5/6 at best.

No way 666. Production loses a mark for being thin, And songwriting loses at least a mark for being unneccesarily long, just playing a 5 minute song twice, essentially. Check out other great bands that are renowned for long songs and you'll see that such repetition doesn't occur like here (Opeth is the obvious one). Musicianship is hard to fault though, but the blast beats are dodgy. 555 about right. Amazing how much the new Deicide is inspired by this album though.

Agreed, this CD deserved 666+1. The drumming is tighter than an asshole and meshes with the speedy deathgrind riffs perfectly to create some of the best hooks I've heard in death metal. The harmonic interludes are just what the review claims, epic in proportion and will make fans of old In Flames raise their fists in unison. If you are into brutal metal GET THIS ALBUM.

It took me six months to listen past the first two brutal minutes of the song "Dechristianize", but when I finally did, I realized that this isn't about hyperspeed or grind or pseudogabber at all - it's EPIC, melodic, furious, Death-tolling-for-Christianity metal. If anything, it reminds me of Doom metal, in its regard for texture, and how one movement leads to another. A staggering fucking work, and the last thing I'd have expected from anything Glen Benton's associated with. A 6/6/6 right out of the park, in my book.

An album can not be a classic if the musicians were dumb enough to play ever song twice. Pretneding to write sweeping compositions by multiplying by 2 is not the mark of genius

Because you appreciate what is good, you appreciate VR. Because you are not "into" modern death you don't realize the gravity of this release. Because of a tendency of myopia of people reviewing this genre of music most fail to make the connection of what makes an album like the new VR so poinant. Because I understand I'm compelled to argue the point in favor of Dechristianize. 666 Motherfuckers!!!!!!11

do NOT listen to this album for glen benton, albeit hes a good vocalist and so on, hes not even a major part of the music. lazaro wrote MOST of the music...anyone saying he doesnt do much is totally in the wrong as he is the backbone riff writer...as for suzuki...hes easily the best all around musician in metal...if not one of the best in music period...to clear up the confusion, lazaro did a lot of the music, and even some of the arranging and such, suzuki did the bass, LEADS, drums, lyrics AND the high vocals one the album, when i saw them live he of course was playing guitar, and did the high vocals....in all seriousness, benton seems like hes there for exposure, the live show was great, but glen just sort of sontered around the stage while tony and dave ripped out a really awesome performance...i heard rumors that dave was thinking about doing the drums on the tour...but then tim yeung filled in and good lord did he do a wonderfull fucking job...vital remains is not over rated, they are under rated and unrecognized...buy their fucking album, go to their shows....if youre not happy, youre a flimsy cunt.

GREAT album! Best death metal release since Deicide's "Legion" or Morbid Angel's "Blessed are the Sick"! The drum sound is somewhat off due to the production but the rest of the album is killer. Great riffs, killer leads and a GREAT vocal performance by Benton. Get this album folks! You wont regret it!

Definitely the most overrated release of the year. The boring and drawn out songs wear out real quick. This is definitely "brutal" but could I please get a riff? What's with those annoying drum parts? It sounds like someone hitting a trash can which is clearly heard on the first track. Anyways, the songs are to long and they don't really go anywhere. They would've been better of cutting the song lengths to 3 1/2 minutes. What's the point of repeating the same chaos again and again and again and again. Zzzzzzz.

For some reason Glen Benton makes some incomprehensible sound spew from my lips somewhat sounding like Harumpppp of sorts. After catching them last year and watching him basically convulse on stage I quickly assumed his career would soon be ending. I had to laugh when Earache put out their big announcement that they were signing Deicide because the band has basically done all it can possibly do. So when I first popped this fucker in I had tainted expectations from the get go. After the very fitting intro which I have no idea what it's name is called either there Diesel but it's the one from Excalibur and I believe Ozzy used that fucker too, I was fucking floored by what literally blasted me in the head quickly tossing a look of shock on my face. Fully brutal through and through and just when you think where is this motherfucker going with all the speed and brutality Tony Lazaro hits you with these outstanding leads/melodic passages that take nothing away from the overall heaviness but ultimately add to the oncoming heavy. Lyrically the fucker is righteously blasphemous and beyond fitting. All I can say is I was thoroughly surprised and I completely agree this fucking monster will end up on top tens all over the place at the end of the year. (An Amazing fucking year for metal already BTW) Again I can't believe Glen even still had this kind of performance left in him. I don't give a shit how metal you perceive yourself to be, if your not eating up this fucking album than something is truly wrong with your ears. On another note it's been a while since I have come across a Morrissound recording and it's good to hear that the once legendary studio can still pump out killer recordings. If I was to score Dechristianize myself, the appropriate score would of course had to have been 666. Killer fuckin album is all I can really say!
