Being hailed by some as a continuation of Slaughter of the Soul era At the Gates after hitting the scene with their stunningly powerful and critically acclaimed debut in Sweet Vengeance – and equally as impressive follow-up Descent Into Chaos – it seemed those comparisons were completely warranted, even if they seemed a bit imprudent. With expectations always skyrocketing through the roof when it comes to these all-star studded metal line ups, the initial grouping of musicians lived up to those lofty expectations on the debut, with the second incarnation of the group ultimately reaching those same heights, even if they continued to rely on the same old Gothen-formula. There was just a magic to be felt and heard within the music that elevated the songwriting bar within the melodic death metal genre as a whole, and even as tired as the whole scene has become over the years, this band simply 'got it'.

Continuing to shake up their always changing line up, Nightrage bring a ‘Tomas Lindberg-less’ manifestation to the fray, and what you have is a band that hardly sounds like the brutally beautiful, poser slaughtering beast that – and let’s be honest here – owes much of what they were to the throaty Lindberg. Content to offer up simple three and four chord progressions that rely on the overlying melodies to give the songs life, new vocalist Jimmie Strimmel brings a completely different vibe to the vocal front that ultimately makes the band sound a tad less aggressive. Fusing the aggressive growls of Whoracle era Anders Friden with the cleanly sung glossiness of A Predator’s Portrait era Björn “Speed” Strid topped off by some tough guy shouts sprinkled here and there, the vocals make the band sound almost ‘Americanized’, if you will. I know the band has always utilized cleanly sung vocal sections on the two prior full-length recordings, but this time around those cleans are not only more prevalent, but they take on a more prominent role in each song. What you end up with is the standard ‘dirty over the verse’ coupled with the emotionally ‘clean over the chorus’ modus operandi during most of the material, and if that disappointed you when In Flames, Soilwork, and the like went down that road, you’ll be equally disappointed with the final results on hand here as well.

In essence, the group isn’t doing anything different musically speaking, as you still get the crisply produced dual guitar attack comprised choppy riffage, note for note melo-licks, and emotionally laced solos that don’t come any sweeter sounding. You’ll also hear a perfectly mixed drum kit and a performance comprised of verbose fills, a minimal but nice peppering of powerhouse blast beats, and a favorable amount of punchy double kick accented by a thickly mixed bass tone. With that said some of the songs will blister out of the gate with promise, only to be shot to hell by either a poor choice of direction or flat out lazy and uninspired riffs. Even the licks that shower the borrowed Maiden-esque riffing lack flavor for the most part and ultimately work against the band. Not even the best production in the world coupled with top end, class ass musicianship will save an album if the songwriting doesn’t match up. It’s a shame, too, because with Strimmel’s performance being as well executed as it is, it’s just too damn bad that the band backing him couldn’t deliver some quality songs for him to shine over.

At the end of the day this is merely an average outing by a band that is capable of so much more. I can’t say enough about how much of a positive influence Lindberg was on this band musically, and as noticeable as his absence is throughout the entire record, I’m not sure even his croaky rasp would have saved the insipid songwriting on A New Disease is Born. All in all, uninspired and extremely tired.

It's good, but Decent Into Chaos is better. This album has more than a few, "good," tracks, but none really stand out that much. I have yet to hear their first album, but I'm sure it's better than this. I'd either give this a 3.5 or a 4 in the songwriting department.

This album is a grower... For me, I don't give a shit about the past member and I think they did a very good job with this album. At first I was kinda disapointed a lot since I really liked their old stuff and I waited this one so much. The more I listen the more I like and I even think they could have use more clean vocal parts. Let's hope the lineup will stay like that. I give a least 4.5 for SW but I could touch the 5.

I thought 'Sweet Vengeance' was pretty good- amazing musicianship, some killer songs but also alot of filler. 'Descent into Chaos' was worse, less killer songs and less of their amazing solos (seriously this band writes some of the best tuneful, catchy and hyper-technical solos i've ever heard without showing off). As for this album...it's great, the best Nightrage album so far. The new singer is great and suits the music more than Thomas Lindberg (who I thought was too brutal for the melodic sound of this band, even though he is good too); the new drummer is the best, most solid and technical drummer they've ever had, even if he is not a 'star' like their old drummers; and the production is perfect- heavy, clear and crisp with a perfect mix to match. As for the songs- they are all great, no filler here, all catchy as fuck (there is not as much clean singing as people make out, don't worry, and it's not all screamed verse, clean chorus the singer changes it around quite a bit). The guitar playing is the best i've heard from this band, even without Gus G, Marious really shines and doesn't hold back one bit- blazing solos which are highly technical but so catchy you can sing them in your head, and plenty of killer riffs, the guitar playing is definately the highlight of the album. No standout songs, like previous albums (all are great), but check out 'Spiral', 'Reconcile' and 'Scars' if you have been put off by other reviewers. If this was released 5-10 years ago we would all be hailing this as a melodic death metal masterpiece (even though it sounds amazing today), but unfortunately it seems to have been lost in the huge amount of music being released. 6/5.5/6

Lol im imrpessed by you guys. I expected more whining about lindberg's replacement hehehe. Well my opinion about nightrage is that: Very nice musicians but their music on first 2 albums is too much iron maiden (well in death version offcurse) which is bad for me. I mean, i like maiden but i like originality abit more ;). Since this album is abit changed from their previous i deffinitely gonna check this out, cheers..

I like it. I think it has some catchy as fuck parts. I can see where the NWOAHM comparisons come from, but its more melodeath than that

I don't know what to make of this, since I NEVER thought of this band as "a continuation of Slaughter of the Soul era At the Gates ". For me, Sweet Vengeance sucked, had good components but the songs were meh. The follow up was worse. This probably wouldn't spend much time in my music rotation either.

This album is perfect, if your idea of perfection is a stiff cock up the ass.

I`ll lead the backlash against the backlash! I thought this album was really lame and one of the disappoitments of the year so far. Enjoyed their first 2 but this has gone all NWOAHM with the awful melody breakdowns and metalcore influences. Rubbish!

Whew! Glad to see others that think this disc rules! I thought I was listening to a totally different band when I saw all of the shit bag reviews of this. Nightrage have always been dead average after their debut disc (which slayed!)...the production is killer, tons of riffage, melodic vox/death vox....the "core" tag is extremely remote here....this is melodic death thrash at its best...no brainer purchase...it's cheap at www.VeryDistro.com

I didn't see what was so disappointing about this album. I expected it to suck like many of you, but it actually doesn't at all. As good as Tomas Lindberg was in the band, the new guy fits just as well and even has some decent clean vocals to make things a bit more interesting.

This album is killer and since I adore Lindberg I was very skeptical and came away floored. I dont think the songs follow the clean chorus, dirty verse mold on all of them, theres stuff inter mixed all over. Acoustics in some spots ad the end riff of Scars is killer. Anything less than a 5 across is unfair.

Nice call, FF, and thanks for pointing that out. Definitely not the way I intended it to read...the fix is in and the site should update the review shortly.

Whoracle has "tough guy shouts?" That has to be a typo.

I am actually really impressed....the new vocalist sounds fantastic to me. I'm only on my first listen, but the songs seem to have a lot of vitality. songwriting a 5 seems more like it.

Accurate review, although I will say this record isn't quite as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Without Lindberg, this band loses some of it's flair but still retains its excellent instrumentation. I suggest digesting this one start to finish before jumping to any conclusions on how much this album "sucks".

Is Melodic Death Metal in a pinch OR in better shape than ever ? Honestly, I don't have the spark for that genre like I used to.. Still remember when I first heard "In Flames - The Jester Race" album when it came out.. I was in love.. Melodic Death certainly took a rather.. surprising turn with time..

They sound like mere imitators here. I felt that even Descent Into Chaos couldn't compete with the brilliant Sweet Vengeance. Owell.

From the songs I've heard, I'd have to agree with the review. The music doesn't have the same spark like previous records. I definitely thought the guitar work was lacking on this record compared to the dual attack of Lindberg's vocals and the musicianship on 'Descent' and 'Sweet.' Stil, I've only heard three songs so I guess there is room for doubt. I guess there is worse out there.

going to have to disagree on the songwriting, this album has some of the most infectious thrash songs i've heard in a long time. and the singing vocals here sound way better than new in flames or soilwork. i can certainly see how the comparisons are merrited, and will turn a few people off to this disc, but i think there's something more here. 5/5/5 imho
