"What I need is something so scary, it'll clear three-hundred square miles of every living Christian soul," declares the sample opening "Eye for an Eye." I couldn't agree more. Am I convinced? Almost.

The hellishly turbulent sound practically justifies that statement right off the bat. The guitars and bass make a thick, bottom-heavy wall of sound that merges with the bass drum sample to create a lean, grinding fuzz. I swear Luke Kenny somehow managed to record and digitally compress a supernova for the kicks, because it's right there churning my bowels with light speed, programmed superfluity. There are even occasional glitches and bubbling electric drones sizzling quietly away behind some tracks, but the dirtiness of this record is thankfully pulled together by The Berzerker's most notorious asset: its speed. Sounding at times faster than ever before, the snare has been sampled with a crisp, acoustic tone, and when unleashed truly epitomises a bone-snapping machine gun chatter. Even the abundance of vocals are kept in check by a volume that leaves them aptly fighting for attention.

It all sounds like a blood-soaked dream, with the violently shredding guitars and menacing mid-riff slides of "False Hope," "No More Reasons" and "Weapons of War" injecting much of the ferocity claimed by the album's title. Their mix of double bass rolls, blasts, demented riffs and hyperactive vocals comes across in a frantic gabba crust that'd make a great soundtrack for genocidal invading martians, and all the tracks at their best evoke that intensely focused, brimstone atmosphere similar to any Morbid Angel material. "Retribution" and "Weapons of War" take a more Slaughter of the Soul approach to melodic riffing which works well, while "The Cancer" and "Heavily Medicated" showcase Necroticism-era Carcass chops that can be found in most of The Berzerker's music.

Unfortunately, while the consistency of Animosity is excellent, it is at the cost of having its music padded with melodic, Suffocation-lite riffs that are too compact and too repetitive to give the songs further depth. No track escapes them, and after the onslaught is over it becomes clear that The Berzerker still haven't given us anything very original since their debut. The teasingly different closer "Lonely World" plays around with some sustained beats, extended riffing and less frenzied vocals, but doesn't anticipate anything like the monstrous "Farewell" did from their last album.

It'd be easy to dismiss Animosity on these pedantic grounds, but even though in its bones it is still fairly average death metal, it's also a visceral, adrenal blast with groovy electric beats and a filthy sound. The Berzerker fans are greatly pleased.

They dropped the masks after their second full length (this is their fourth.)

Aren't these the guys that wear the masks their parents bought them at the Halloween store in their local shopping mall? It's almost as pathetic as those nu-metal losers Slipknot, only a death metal band like Berzerker should know better. Unless they're going to "Trick or Treat" and collect candy from the fans in the audience, they better ditch the masks before they get personally queer-stomped by myself.

I just got this promo and I'm pissed. 99 tracks + voiceovers? Earache can kiss my balls.

Do I *have* to start using a term like 'terrorcore'? Damn all these 'cores. Having fuzzed-out bass drum samples and the odd more electronic rhythm doesn't a fictitious sub-sub-genre make. The Berzerker is nothing more than death metal with a superficial sheen that resembles all your electrotechnocores. Unbelievably, a few death metal bands have really fast constant blasting. That doesn't make them a subgenre of electronic music. Dan: Suffocation's and Berzerker's melodic riffs are quite similar in phrasing to me. Those of the latter just aren't as good and more repetitive.

I've only listened to it a few times but so far I like it. It sounds a bit more like Dissimulate than World of Lies which is cool because my favorite Berzerker CD is Dissimulate.

whenever you listen to the berzerker you should know what you're getting yourself into. there's nothing natural about it and amidst all of the stoner bands and analog-revival albums, i need that every once in awhile. this album is pretty much no different from his last two. it's perfect

The Bezerker have defintely touched a new level in this album. This is unlike anything Ive heard before really and is probably just as appealing to Speedcore and terrorcore fans as to brutal death metallers. If you took unreal vocals with the brutality and speed of Belphegor and Anaal Nathrakh and added terrorcore beats to it, it may come close. If alot of mayhem appeals to you and you enjoy mething up and punching the air, this may be for you too. I disagree that this can be compared to Morbid Angel, Suffocation, etc because it is half speedcore and thus sounds nothing like it. The production makes it that way. However the reviewer is correct that the riffing can be basic and repetitive. But then again techno beats are repetitive and I dont know if anything else would sound more in place. This IS landbreaking and new and in no doubt you will see many bands in a few years attempting to copy their unique sound of mixing industrial death metal with hardcore techno electronica. Downside imo is that I wish they had time to slow down every once in awhile to give more atmosphere and groove to the music. But this IS intended to be hard, to hammer-smash your fucking face and it is all that and more. 6 -Production 4.9 -Songwriting 5 -Muscianship (for the excellent DJing and mixing)

yeah these guys are some pretty visceral shit, really like their last album, but i think "Farewell" should only have been about 5 minutes long, i tend to turn the album off when that song shows up good review, curious to hear what Erik thinks though

Heh, yes. Luckily I am a big Berzerker fan, and have owned the Animosity ltd. ed. since its European release date. In all, i've probably given it a couple dozen attentive listens, and more in the background. But even though I hugely enjoying their unique sound, I have to be frank about how important this album actually is. In my view, it basically isn't. Don't forget though that at MR an average score by most of the writers here works out at about 4, so my scoring for this album reflects my enjoyment of it also, despite my written criticisms.

hmm pretty harsh review imo, this is definatly up there with WOL & Dissimulate. Maybe this guy needs to soak it up before judging it. All great modern metal grows in time!
