During April of this year, Psyopus will hit the road with Behold…the Arctopus and Dysrhythmia – a fitting tour package simply because all the bands involved are technical, spastic, and overly knotty. In fact, it’s a given that there’s going to be a certain amount of inaccessibility when a style such as this is on the table, and Our Puzzling Encounters Considered is no different. While the New York quartet offers truly mind-blowing musical performances time and again, what makes them a tough sell is the inability to latch onto their material, as most of the intricate tunes on Our Puzzling Encounters Considered are bursts relayed at breakneck speed. In other words, Psyopus are often an impenetrable blur, which can frustrate a listener and ultimately detract from the ever-important notion known as staying power.

With that being said, the compositions on tap are far from slapdash, but, rather, the essence of controlled chaos, which comes across as having been efficiently calculated to the highest degree. Songs such as “The Pig Keeper’s Daughter,” “2,” and “Scissor Fuck Paper Doll” are incredibly fast-paced and similar to Behold...the Arctopus, while more aggressive, grind-oriented numbers like “Whore Meet Liar,” “Insects,” and “Play Some Skynyrd” employ 7000 Dying Rats-type ingenuity. Thankfully, Psyopus switch things up with the clean, Dysrhythmia-esque “Imogen’s Puzzle Pt. 2,” which also has some Hella vibes, before accelerating to the jarring “Kill Us.” On another positive note, Our Puzzling Encounters Considered is of a tasteful length (38 minutes) and is easier to digest as a result. In short, an hour of such exhausting music would be overkill – sadistic even.

Though I’m not familiar with the reasoning behind Psyopus’ jump to Metal Blade since they fit in much better stylistically with sister label Blackmarket Activities – the label that released their debut Ideas of Reference – I suppose they’re poised to gain more exposure and more income on MB. In any event, it’s a pity that OPEC is as unapproachable as it is. The musicianship is excellent, as I said earlier, and there are no conspicuous flaws in the songwriting, but most of their songs are just difficult to get into. Or, more accurately, too difficult.

@Kenny Ironic to your comment, one of my majors was in Math. In this case, out of 18, not 6. I mean the total score, in which case, 0.5 only amounts to 2.8% difference. My point being, it's like saying you'd stop reading a review site because they gave a 85 instead of an 88. And if you would, I'd find you dumb!

pretty insane release... but i dont know, it just didnt seem memorable. the guitars were great and insane. i ve never heard anything like it, but the whole cd just wasnt enough. they missed that one stand out song every album should have, sadly all the songs just kinda sound the same...

@ Zal - Go back to school and study math, 0.5 is 8.33% of 6 - not less than 3% Although i do agree with you it's pathetic to be complaining that a reviewer gave a 5.5 instead of a 6.

Incidentally, I got a chance to listen to this.. and wow, I completely agree with the scores. Produced well, and the guys definitely seemed to show of their dizzying, frantic, chaotic etc. pace in the songs. And the whole time, I couldn't find a moment where I was actually enjoying the songs. I'm sure as mentioned, they're not exactly trying to sound appealing, and I'll call it a success at that. I'm sure this is the type of thing that after a looot of time spent, you could really get into the songs; I'll take a grower any day, but since I'm usually doing some sort of work while listening to this stuff, I'll pass on something that I have to work to enjoy.

Just got this cd, I will say i loved most of it. There are some parts that fall stale for me. The looped part that says annoying at the end was in fact, annoying, but the song at the end of that was hilarious. The singers ex girlfriend really must have pissed him off. Whereas sometimes i get angry when people diss a band i like or give it bad scores, with psyopus its completely understandable, because they really dont try to hard to appeal to anyone, they kinda just do their own thing. I've seen people go from completely happy to completely pissed off within 10 seconds of hearing this stuff. Somehow it works perfectly with my head.

I wouldn't say the guitar was that hard to play, remembering the songs though.....

This reminds me of a 4 yr old kid who will tell his mom "I hate you!" because he didn't get his way or that candy bar he wanted. I'm with Zal..Grow up. There are plenty of ways to express your opinion without bashing. And if you are old enough to type then you are old enough to get your insight across without sounding like a spoiled fanboy. So your favorite band doesn't get the scores you want. Your favorite band isn't necessarily that good. Or maybe they ARE the bull's balls. Nonetheless, at least respect the reviewers.

I love this new trend of lashers saying they hate a reviewer or this lost respect for this site because their favorite band didn't get a 6 in Musicianship. Funnier too when they got a 5.5 in it. Grow up, or write your own damn review. You shouldn't be visiting any review websites if you'd stop reading because you thought a score was off by less than 3%.

re: cory I don't know about Jason, but even if the musicianship is stellar I knock off a half point if they can't take advantage of their talents to write good songs. none of these categories are mutually exclusive, in my opinion. And honestly, why would you get that riled up over a number.

i agree w/cory, how in the hell do they not get a 6 in musicianship? If this isn't a 6, then show me what is.

I love these guys. Phenomenally skillful. Saw them live with JFAC, The Acacia Strain, and Daath. Fantastic. The guitarist was able to pull everything off near flawlessly live. Yes, their music is frantic, but I enjoy it. I suggest you listen to them before checking them out. It's all based off personal opinion and tolerance.

I agree with Dmoralize on everything he said. Excited to see this band with Dysrhythmia and B...TA. I practically nutted my jeans when I read those dates.

I agree. The guys are phenomenal songwriters. Just because they don't conform to the pre-conceived notions as to what a song should sound like does not make them any less talented. Psyopus is a band of very talented, dedicated, and wise musicians. I appreciate anything and everything on this album and their past recordings.

I actually find that Psyopus has excellent songwriting... the songs really flow well together, and while they are quite angular, they also keep a really coherent sense of form and function.

i dunno if i agree that this sounds much like ion dissonance, i think they are actually the better songwriters.

Definately a type of music for certain people, I'm just waiting for someone to come here and say you just don't get it. Very talented musicians but honestly I downloaded their last cd and rarely play it and I heard one song from this one and it just left me feeling annoyed and angry. I think I actually remember something on their myspace saying they are trying to be annoying but this is just too much for me.

You either like this style of music or you dont. As far as this album goes I would have to say there is a marked improvement over the last album (which was also good by the way). The sheer complexity of these "songs" leaves little room for melody and verse and listeners should not expect these elements in a band such as this. Excellent music to propell yourself from sour mood to completely disgruntled. Also the perfect music to clear out any room.

I really like these guys a lot... even though the main criticisms i've heard seem to be about their (lack of) songwriting. But sometimes I'm really in the mood to listen to this really angular and over the top style of music and PsyOpus is great at it. Can't wait to catch one of those shows with Arctopus and Dysrhythmia... all great bands.

@ Grist: Yes, Metal Blade does distribute BMA releases, but they are two distinct labels. As a matter of fact, the BMA artist page for Psyopus says they signed to Metal Blade, which is further proof, and no, to my knowledge, there's no mention of BMA on the packaging at all. Metal Blade's got quite the distribution list, too, what with a guy from As I Lay Dying and a guy from Unearth both having started individual labels recently. Sometimes this label business can get kind of confusing, needless to say. =p

I'm pretty sure BMA releases are being distributed by Metal Blade thanks to the Red Chord dudes. Or is there no mention of BMA on the packaging at all?

I don't think Psyopus sound like 7DR as much as they have the ability, like 7DR, to alternate approaches in different songs, rather than sticking to one formula the whole time. Sorry if it was unclear.

You really think 7000 Dying Rats? I'm not sure if I really agree with that comparison, but Psyopus really is hard to toss in a nutshell and I think the tour they're taking part in really helps do it for you.
