I've never heard Mnemic before signing up for this review, but I've been savvy to their presence as a force in the Danish metal scene since they put out Mechanical Spin Phenomena. I've always drawn speculative comparisons between this band and others that I've never gotten into that play a similar breed of modern industrial/pop/metal like Scarve and Raunchy. After giving Passenger a few spins around the block it's clear they know how to put forward a product with an almost irreproachable presentation. With a hulking Tue Madsen production and a meticulously fine tuned final mix, these songs just plain sound good. But no matter how well polished this final product may be, a lack of fundamental songwriting ability will surface. And sure enough, it does on Passenger.

I'm glad that my assumptions about this band's sound proved to be well founded, as I was looking for something heavy and catchy to turn my brain off to and passively enjoy. It's a familiar sound, but one that's hard to categorize without undoubtedly making potential fans uneasy. There's equal parts nu-metal, industrial, modern hardcore, and post Gothenburg influence on Passenger, and they all manifest themselves in pretty positive ways. This is an undoubtedly heavy and bullshit free album. "In the Nothingness Black" and "In Control" are hook laiden anthems that invite a few replays with their powerfully sung choruses. Elsewhere, "What's Left" exhibits some strong riffing and "Psykorgasm" is bathed in lush atmosphere similar to that found on the latest Devin Townsend Band output. I think I even hear the skulleted one lending his pipes to this track. The rest is mostly good, but homogenously pummeling and indistinct. Instead of any marks of real creativity stepping to the forefront, all that decorates this imposing wall of sound is a well integrated hybrid of obvious influences. As a result, fans looking for a slightly more rewarding listen will probably feel underestimated and bored by Passenger. As rocking background music, this works. As a truly immersive experience, it doesn't.

There's nothing wrong with making your music sound great. But, I think most readers will know what I'm getting at when I say there's a difference between sounding good and actually being good, and latter has little to do with production or studio polish. I think Mnemic have a ways to go in the second category, as they're allowing their aesthetic to carry them, instead of their songs. Ultimately, I think Mnemic's desire to embellish rather than create something truly memorable has undrercut their ability to make a much better album.

Imagine putting this production to use on a band that is already real good.

I think your reviews makes a lot of sense. I was pulling for these guys and I wanted to like it a lot more but I think the band is trying too hard with the production and not enough on actual songs. I mean there is some good stuff but it musically they are crafting the kind of music all around that I was hoping they would. However, the intro track alone still gives me hope that deep down they know the power they can truly give off as a band.

well im lookin' forward to listening to this album. but yeah anyway if you dont like mnemic, you dont like 'em . simple as. if you do, you do. so theres no point havin' a go at people for not likin' a band. you aint gonna gain anything from that if we all had the same views on bands, then life would be abit boring but i fuckin' love mnemic and their sound. cant wait to get passenger. and from what ive heard it sound amazin'. later

What a bunch off typical bullshit-talking from many of you "ordinary" metal-listeners. You clearly don´t have the experience and listening-skills to this kind of technical music. I feel for ya guys. Well, like Jacques says, this is a very brutal and tight record from at very talented band...no wonder that Wolbers where more than willing to produce the album. Stay \m/ - less bullshit-ignorance talk please.

Runs with Scissors, you are clearly not one of the brighter bulbs in the chandalier not to mention supremely tone deaf comparing 'Passenger' to garbage like 'St.Anger' and 'Pink Bubbles Go Ape'. And no, dipstick, MNEMIC are neither hardcore nor metalcore nor emo/screamo - anyone with even an ounce of musical knowledge can confirm that for you whether they like MNEMIC or not. Get a clue for Vanna, please, before you spew your mental diarrhea on websites such as this one.

Congratulations Jacques, your second post managed to sound even stupider then your first. But you're totally right man, black is white, up is down and Passenger is the greatest album ever; right up there with St. Anger and Pink Bubbles Go Ape in sheer, unadulterated asskickery. I totally agree, we should be directing our disgust towards “all the faceless hardcore, metalcore, and emo/screamo crap” and not towards Mnemic; I mean, its not like Mnemic embodies all of those genres to some extent right?

LOL - All you haters here make me laugh. MNEMIC are influenced by but have never cloned anybody, no more so than Fear Factory and SYL stole from Front Line Assembly and used Rhys Fulber to make their shit happen. And if MNEMIC were as talentless as some of you claim then Christian from FF would've not worked with them on 'Passenger' and proclaimed 'Mechanical Spin Phenomena' his fave album of the year 2003. You'd be better off directing your wrath at all the faceless hardcore, metalcore, and emo/screamo crap out there instead hating on one of the best new bands out there. Either way, MNEMIC won't be stopped and 'Passenger' is just another step up the ladder. See you in the pit, bitches!

I hate it when a bland-ass band like this gets compared to Strapping Young Lad, a band that put out one of the quintessential greatest albums of the last 10 years with "city". Yeah, I just hate that. This album is just boring and the mechanical like production works for Meshuggah, not so for this band. It needs to be warmer, more inviting with their attempt at writing hooks.

I never liked Mnemic. I always thought their vocalist was highly annoying and totally talentless, and their music was nothing more than way-below-average Fear Factory / Meshuggah / Strapping Young Lad clone riffs. I did think that getting the Scarve vocalist could be an improvement for the band, because that guy is actually decent. But no, this album totally blows as hard as the rest of their pitiful discography. The same copy-cat riffs and boring songwriting are still in place, and not even the new vocalist helps matters whatsoever. Let's hope they break-up really soon.

As a die-hard MNEMIC fan I was curious to see how the band would deal with the loss of vocalist MIchael Bogballe (only THE premier modern metal vocalist, post-Devin Townsend). Well, the good news is that new vocalist Guillaume Bideau (ex-Scarve) is almost as good as Sir Mike and the balance between harsh, clean, and layered vox has pretty much remained in tact. Sonically however 'Passenger' is pretty different from the first 2 albums, i.e. much harsher sounding (think Meshuggah's 'Chaosphere' production-wise), with the electronic FX mixed way in the background. And while 'The Audio Injected Soul' was pure, instant ear candy with tons of supreme hooks and choruses (almost too much so....), 'Passenger' takes a lot more spins to really sink in. Curiously enough, most of the choruses are still extremely catchy but the songs overall are not. 'Passenger' is almost the anti-TAIS in that regard. Maybe that's a good thing in the long run but it may be off putting to those that had hoped for a continuation of TAIS. In any case, the new MNEMIC are still capable of spitting out some of ther best modern metal/neo-thrash and this is easily their most brutal outing. Fave tracks include the first single 'Meaningless' (co-written by Roy Z who also contributes a wicked solo!), the crushing 'Pigfuck', ''Pskorgasm' (feat. Jeff Walker of Carcass and Shane Embury of Napalm Death on add. vox), 'Electric I'd Hypocrisy' (shades of Meshuggah & Thordendal's SNW), the hypnotic 'Stuck Here' (awesome Sitar textures at the end), and supreme album closer 'The Eye on Your Back', which ends in an epic climax of multi-layered vocals - Guillaume's grandest moment on this record - before the song fades with a haunting piano melody and the sounds rain pouring down. Genius! Bottom line: The new MNEMIC might take some getting used to and some intense listening but once 'Passenger' sinks in you fucking LOVE IT! 9/10

@MastoMan If you like the technological sound effects on this, I strongly recommend Callenish Circle's Pitch.Black.Effects and Sybreed's Slave Design. They have that kinda stuff, but its backed by skilled musicians.

I've always sort of had a thing for this band, but as I listen to this album, I grow fairly weary of them. I like how they add technological sound effects, and that is probably what sets them apart for me from other bands. This album is good, but it gets a bit tedious after listening to the other Mnemic albums. I think they just need some fresh new ideas, and a permanent keyboardist to support their cool effects, because otherwise, it seems that they are not left with much.

I'll admit that I was a pretty big fan of Mnemic since hearing their first album. Sure they weren’t doing anything mind-blowingly original but at least they gave me something energetic enough to listen to in the gym. When I heard that the original singer left the band I got a little worried; until I found out the guy from Scarve was going to record vocals on the new record. Now I've always thought Scarve was a decent enough band so it stands to reason that Scarve + Mnemic would have to equal something I'd enjoy listening to right? Well I couldn't be more wrong. Normally I'd be inviting all you narrow-minded purists out there to blow me, but I'm not even going to try and defend this album. You win. I have no idea how the new singer could go from doing a respectable enough job with Scarve to... what ever the hell it is he was trying to get across with this new insufferable vocal style in Mnemic. The exact same thing happened with Raunchy's latest release; a new singer comes along, emo-izes the clean vocals beyond any credibility, and completely ruins it for me. I tried to enjoy this record. I really did, but by the time I got to listening to "In Control" I knew that something was horribly, horribly wrong. I tried spinning through the whole thing a few more times but it only proceeded to disgust me further. If it was Mnemic's aim to go about alienating their core-fan base, then mission accomplished. Until Michael comes back this band is dead to me.

Yeah it's Scarve's old lead singer. Anyway I agree with the review. It's pretty much a brainless dumb metal album that I for some reason like listening to when there's nothing else I wanna listen to.

They toured the US pretty extensively and according to one interview, had become Nuclear Blast's highest selling recently signed/new band. Soo, people are definitely buying.. Saw them with Hypocrisy/Dark Tranquillity/Soilwork a while back. Yeah, it was certainly on the generic side, but they had good stage presence and kicked things off pretty well for a crowd that had mostly never heard of them. It's not too surprising that they're getting a following. Didn't make a fan out of me, but I can still respect a band that gets people's attention live, even if they're not especially impressive. Haven't listened to this, 'know I won't buy it, but they had a vocalist change too, I think?

I agree. If Korn and Fear Factory merged you'd have Passenger, which sadly, is like mixing peanut butter with gravy. The same goes for many other nu-metal and industrial metal bands hitting the scene lately - too much mood, not enough thought. And by the way, I'm sick of people making out bands like Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Meshuggah to be God. As a Meshuggah fan, I highly doubt the band ever decided they wanted to be worshipped. Just listened to. So for all those people in the other 'league' who think that listening to Meshuggah makes them beyond reproach, think again.
