Synopsis:

Yet another excellent Finnish band vying for Amorphis’s throne....

Reviews:

Last year, Noumena’s Absence crept onto my year end list, and while most are rightly lauding Insomnium’s Above the Weeping World, Noumena’s fantastic third album is also worthy of the same level of praise.

Culling tangibly from the likes of Rapture, Insomnium, Amorphis, Slumber, Swallow the Sun et al, Noumena’s sound is paced, introspective and morose, yet crunchy, melodic and uplifting with a sprinkling of guest female and male vocals (Fall of the Leafe’s Tuomas Tuominen once again lends his unique tone to “Retrospection”).

The now standard thick Finnish guitar tone (courtesy of Sundicoop) and layered approach is perfected giving each deliberate riff and melody a lush warm feel and Antti Haapanen has the all too familiar deep Finnish roar, but it all comes together around superb and varied songs. From the robust canter of tracks like “Misanthropolis”, “Retrospection”, “The Burning” and “Triumph of Loss” to the more somber hues of “Burden of Solacement” and “Monument of Pain”, through the delicate closing ballads “Through the Element” and “Fire and Water”, Anatomy of Life is an enthralling and captivating full of Rapture-esque pacing, layering and simple yet effective harmonies that draw you in and stick with you when the album is over

There are more revered Finnish bands out there right now, but with Anatomy of Life, Noumena should now be genuinely in that elite group and if you enjoy any of the bands above, this is pretty much a no brainer.

I don't know about you guys, but to me this album sounded way too generic. Givin' it 666 is just mind-boggling. Way too dance-ish for me to get a 6 for songwriting, and a 6 for musicianship here is absurd.

Great bands, both Insomnium and Noumena....great albums, one step forward for metal...hope they'll wake up Amorphis.

I personally liked this band more than insomnium or swallow the sun. But i still dont think this is 666. Maybe 555.

Three sixes? Gimmie a break. This album is ok, but not 666. This band is also nowhere near as good as Rapture, Insomnium, Swallow the Sun, etc. They may have a slightly similar sound in certain ways, but their songs are fairly dull and they simply aren't as creative as the bands above.

Eh... I'm not a big fan of the death vocals on this, it personally didn't register with me considering the music playing along with it. Musically, this is some sweet stuff. Love their melodic elements, but not interested in the death vocal department. The other vocals worked well though.

i definitely think this is overrated. the songs are great, strong and catchy, top notch production and these guys can handle their instruments for sure, but i think this is lacking the originality and that *don't-know-what* that's necessary to be a true 666. maybe it's just me, and i'm not a big fan of the genre. i think they're just fine. i would give it 5/4,5/4,5

I think 6/6/6 is overrated but still this is a very good album. This band also released "triumph and loss" -EP which contains the song triumph and loss + 5 "left overs". I thought the songs in the EP was better than the songs in anatomy of life. Definitely quality music. It is only released on the internet so you have to download it from iTunes or some other netstore that has it.

Yeah, nice work Mr. T. And I totally agree on the new Insomnium...great fucking record. This is sounding pretty swell as well.

Also wasn't expecting a 6/6/6, but those samples on their site are killer. I'm admittedly a sucker for this Kalmah/Insomnium-like style of melodic death metal. I'm sold! Thanks Erik, great stuff.

Whoa...triple 6's? Wasn't expecting that when I clicked over. The last album had it's moments, but it wasn't that memorable; I'll approach with caution here, but I hope it's as good as stated.
