Synopsis:

Finally, the band fulfills and fleshes out its ‘Southern, sludgy black metal’ moniker.

Review:

I’ve always sort of thought Goatwhore’s previous two overrated efforts were little more than Soilent Green sprinkled with some half hearted black metal imagery and lyrics, but on A Haunting Curse, the New Orleans based band has delivered a dirgey, yet intense slab of swampy, sweaty black metal that stings more than having Louisiana hot sauce squirted in your pee hole while listening to Immortal.

Obviously, due to Ben Falgoust’s vocals and Sammy Duets' guitars, there is still a slight Soilent Green/Crowbar/Acid Bath tone to the music, but the band has finally given their black metal some measure of credibility and songwriting competence rather than relying on the Southern vibe to carry the music. Starting with the impressively blistering black metal assault of “Wear These Scars of Testimony” and “Bloodletting Upon the Cloven Hoof”, Goatwhore show they have upped their black metal ante considerably rather than play tremolo picked Scandinavian riffs with the odd sludgy twang thrown in. “Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult” shows the album's first throes of mid paced Southern groove, but “My Eyes are the Spears of Chaos”, with its more death metal-esque lurch washes away the Southern vibe like a busted levee. However, like the triumphant return of New Orleans, standout tracks “In the Narrow Confines of Defilement”, “Forever, Consumed, Oblivion” and the title track are epic, blackened, smothered, and venomous amalgamations of seething black metal and sneering, butt scratching, tobacco chewing, dungaree clad, incestuous, toothless fury.

Those three tracks make for a hard to follow album mid section that only the heaving, angular “I Avenge Myself” manages to match in the album’s latter stages.  Add to that production held together by Erik Rutan and you have an album that does well to highlight both black metal grimace and Southern leer, which, as a whole, is a very effective, solid listen.

"Yeah, the kill live, saw them friday near Cincinnati. God Forbid and Mnemic had to cancel, leaving just Goatwhore, Arsis, and Byzantine, and vastly improving show quality!" I was about to say, What's wrong with that? I can't get into God Forbid or Mnemic.

I saw a music video of these guys, it was all good untill the vocals deteriorated into homo singing. But thats their newer shit. I heard their older albums are good though... but I dont think I'll get them!

I have never really been into black (ish) metal , but I found this in an Oregon library because it looked like it may have potential. I was pleasantly surprised. For what it's worth, Pitbulls in the Nursery is the best band I've heard in a long time. Word.

Saw them last night in Charlotte, in a live show they devour you, spit you out, and then proceed to rape your soul....it was an amazing show

Generic sounding black/thrash. Nothing too bad, but nothing too great ether. Take it or leave it.

Meh, I didn't think it was that strong IMO. The production is very good but none of the riffs stand out and every song has the same song structure.

Album of the year in my opinion! They found their sound and their new drummer really breathes new life into this band. Very brutal indeed.

This band is not worth my time. Maybe this album is a stepup, but there are many more "black metal" bands worth listening before Goatwhore. I'm sure this sounds better than the last Soilent Green album.

Are there any death metal influences on this album?

The hardcore influences mix perfectly with the black metal. I think this album sounds very unique for this genre. The entire band just clicks. This is a surprising find.

GW's latest is a searing, mendacious slab of vitriolic hatred and infernal blasphemy. Essential for any devotee of the Black Audible Arts.

I fucking LOVE this album! It's topping my list of Things To Do at the moment, and will probably be the next album I buy when I have some spare change to do so. Great disc. 5/5/5

This albumb is the surprise of the year. Nothing like their last, this is furious on all fours. Simmons sounds as close to a drum machine as you can get. The blast beats are fucking PERFECT.

got this a few weeks ago, great musicianship and a nice listen indeed, but i do have to add that the album sounds a tiny bit monotonous.

I never thought I heard much 'sludge' from these guys, at least not enough to have the element thrown into the basic description like it always is. I'll pick this up when they play here with Celtic Frost.

bout time we had a Goatwhore album with decent production. it actually has a similar production to rutan's work on the latest Soilent Green album. still has a dirty raw sound but the guitars have a lot more venom & the drums sound beefy & forceful compared to previous albums. Ben's vocals continue to kick endless ass as well.

Being from New Orleans I have the pleasure of knowing these guys personally and going to their shows very often. I agree with you that they have found their true sound of this disc... "Forever, Consumed, Oblivion" smokes.
