This band’s journey through the world of power metal territory goes all the way back to the late 80’s, but it wasn’t until the late 90’s when I first caught wind of their style of fantasy land metal. Nightfall In Middle Earth was my first taste and is an album that rejuvenated my fondness for this style of music. Its brilliance brought fresh air to an era that saw many pioneers of the genre show their age and kind of disappear from the metal map ultimately allowing the next generation to come in and carry the reigns. Blind Guardian took things to a new level for me with their ostentatious musical arrangements involving high-flying progressive riffing filled with flamboyant vocal melodies and a youthful energy without coming across as the least bit pretentious. Or maybe it was just that my being turned onto this band hit me at a time in my life when I needed it most. We’ve all had those magical musical moments and this was definitely one of those glorious times in metal for me. Whatever the reason or reasons may or may not be, I’ve enjoyed their work ever since.

Epic stories filled with dungeons and dragons, fire and steel are this band’s trademark style from a lyrical point of view. Whether those stories are based on works already written somewhere in literature’s past, or if they come from Blind Guardian’s inner sanctum of fantasy and adventure, it never gets old and they continue to amaze me with their ability to tell a tale. When it comes to the music at hand I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t too keen on the two original songs served as an appetizer from the Fly EP released earlier this year (the title track and "Skalds & Shadows"), and as much as the two songs have grown on me after revisiting them again on A Twist In the Myth, it’s the numbers that flourish with the hook in mouth, gargantuan choruses chock full of multilayered vocal tracks ("This Will Never End", "Otherland", "Another Stranger Me" & "Straight Through the Mirror") that tell me all was good in the world of BG during the songwriting process. Other slower tracks bring out the band’s softer side and are very well composed ballads that reek of great emotion and bring hope to feelings of sadness by illuminating you with delight ("Carrie the Blessed Home" & "The New Order"). And not to be outdone other songs on the album leave the listener thriving with an almost comforting feeling of worth with their confident sense of enchantment ('Turn the Page", "Lionheart" & "The Edge"). This is not dark and evil metal; this is the brighter side of the coin that says it doesn't have to always be about anger and hatred yet can still make a strong impact on the metal listener.

As can be expected every track shines with exceptional drumming which serves as the perfect backdrop for the technical prowess and guitar wizardry which has always been prevalent in anything the band writes. Each song contains outstanding melodic licks and their excellent lead work is heard throughout the album’s entirety. But at the forefront has always been the vocal performance, and Hansi Kürsch does not disappoint. The vocal harmonies he comes up with have always been some of the most unique in the genre and that has not changed. You don't try and veer away from what has worked so well in the recent past and Blind Guardian has shown they know what works best for them and plan on sticking to that formula. The topnotch production of the album brings all of these pieces together as one into a unified and grandiose metal experience.

At the end of the day BG fans will be pleased with this offering and I could see quite a few power and progressive lovers having A Twist In the Myth on their end of the year lists for 2006. Although maybe not quite as strong as the band’s previous two releases, it undoubtedly shows that this German powerhouse hasn’t regressed and can still write a great album. Highly recommended for fans of the band and any and all power and progressive fans. Picking up a copy of this album will be money well spent.

I have a question... Why doesn't this website start from any bands first album and up.. It would make more sense don't you think.. Then you can actually get a grasp on how the band has changed. Its really starting to bother me.. Where is Somewhere Far Beyond or any of the better albums?

Thanks for calling me retarded. I bought the album the day it came out. Maybe the problem for me is that it has a sense of "traditional" or "thrash" and that's typically a problem for me, and certainly not why i began to worship them circa Nightfall. I will keep trying though.

If you don't like this album, you're fucking retarded. It's absolute brilliance. Stop downloading and start buying, or least borrowing from friends. Even when I start playing it by accident, I have to listen to it all the way through before going back to what I intended to listen to originally.

Why am I having trouble liking this?! I'm quite frustrated because the new Blind Guardain release was one of largest things for me, and after all this time, i STILL haven't fallen in love with this album. I worship Nightfull and Night at the Opera, but so far the magic hasn't kicked in on this album. I'm on the verge of giving up on it. Can anyone say anything that will fix this? sheesh.

I'm surprised no one has commented on the 6 rating for production... it sounds like it was recorded in mono and nothing is clear... I've downloaded many different rips of this album and they all sound awful. I generally download before I buy, and I'll be damned if this is not some great music, but I don't want to buy it if the production is as bad as all the rips i've downloaded. Can someone tell me if the production on the purchased copies is really this bad?

Good review. You described everything that makes this album good perfectly. Album of the year for me. Definitely a guilty pleasure. I've never been much of a power metal fan, but Hansi vocals are addicting, the songs are well written and entertaining. Not a bad song on the album. This is my intoduction into blind guardian, but I will be looking into their back catalogue. Fans of Power Metal get this.

greigoroth, feel free to use that one next time you hit the bar...you'll witness first hand how well my powers repel women. It's astounding, really. Nothing makes a woman run faster than a guy talking about multi-sided die. Great Deceiver, the new Persuader IS out. And it fucking smokes...and I SHOULD get off my ass and send the particulars to the boss so's we can review it. More people should know about that band.

Capt: I'd love to see you guys review the new Persuader sometime soon. So far I've seen only a couple reviews of it online and I don't even know when/if it's out yet... Brandon: Yeah you're right about a few of those, and I definitely don't wanna get into the long-winded and usually futile argument of dissecting genres and sub genres and such, but I wouldn't necessarily consider Mercenary, Angel Dust, and Primal Fear purely power. Though they do have such elements as speedy double bass, high vocals (Merc not so much), and often happy guitar/key melodies, I'd say each of those bands' main sound focuses around other styles like prog/thrash/death/speed. I've always considered lyrics about cheesy fantasy stuff like magical swords and dragons to be a key element of powermetal bands, but that's just me. I guess lyrics have just always been a key factor in determining a defining genre for a certain band for me...

brandonmetal, don't be afraid to embrace you're inner "level 5, half-elf, ranger/fighter". We need as many people in our party as possible. Some of these dragons are really tough, and can sometimes only be hit with magical weapons (which I happen to have, by the way, thanks to that Ravenloft adventure in the Drow Forest). Or you could just listen to Persuader...they're basically Blind Guardian without the leather armor.

This record fucking owns. Good to hear the guys get the orchestra and the billion Hansis layered over one another out of their system. Twist would fit perfectly between Imaginations and Nightfall and along with the new Maiden I'm glad to see the stalwart leaders of their genres keeping true to form after all these years. @enraged that sounds fucking amazing. I saw them once in Cleveland with Symphony X and it was easily one of my top 5 concerts ever, but your experience sounds just unreal. Shame PoS couldn't play, I'd kill to see those fuckers live. @brandon stay away from powermetal then dude, but yeah that's one of the best cuts on this album.

I will order this soon. I absolutly love this band. They also hold one of my most fond live moments. I saw them at JAXX in springfield va in jan o4 with symphony x.Pain of salvation wasnt able to make the gig. We stood outside freezing. Most of us with our jackets in our cars. Hanzi came out and said americans were crazy as hell and dedicated. BG played for 3 and a half hours that night. They started taking requests.it was Unreal. They have owned my utmost respect eversince.

I've had it for a week now and have listened to nothing else other than this, night and day. It is a Blind Guardian album through and through so no worries there. If you liked the last two you love this. It is scaled back a bit from A Night At The Opera so if the over the top qualities there were too much you should be pleased. It is also more focused than Nightfall in Middle Earth. No interludes just 11 solid songs (12 if you count Dead Sound of Misery). As for me this is gauranteed my number 1 spot for the year. It's actually quite a bit better than ANATO, which I thought was great in it's own right. This just has an added bit of songcraft and a touch more power than that album. It's refreshing to hear more rhythm guitarwork out front as well. I was prepared for disappointment and yet the guys delivered in every sense, a truly amazing album. 6/5.5/5.5
