In today’s fast-paced music world where the defining characteristics are exploiting the sound of the moment, it is rare for a band to release consistently excellent material. So many bands either start off strong and suffer a sophomore slump, or begin sloppy and gradually improve to where they have a lengthy discography before they achieve any wider notice. In light of these usual paths, Kalmah’s career is all the more impressive as every one of their four albums has been superb. How many other acts start off their career so strongly? Perhaps the only criticism that may be deserved is that every Kalmah song sounds like a Kalmah song.

The Kokko brothers, Antti and Pekka, from Oulu, Finland, formed Kalmah in the wake of a prior band entitled Ancestor. They play fast, melodic death/black metal, with loads of swirling melodies and keyboard action – what we’ve come to expect from Finland. Their first album, Swamplord, showcased the deft guitarwork of the Kokko’s, while smartly limiting the vocals, which was an undeveloped rasp at that point. It played like a melodic death shred album. The follow-up album, They Will Return, refined this style, with them writing better songs, including stronger vocals and lyrics. 2003’s Swampsong was more of the same.

The Black Waltz displays a further development in their sound, especially in the vocal department. Pekka’s vocals have transformed from a passable rasp to a stout roar, and with the improvement, his voice plays a larger role. The opening riff of the opening track, “Defeat”, is actually pretty lame, however, the song quickly picks up. This song has a different feel then some of the rest, maybe a bit of post-thrash-Metallica influence? The next song (“Bitter Metallic Side”) gets right down to business, with blast-beat drumming, rapid-fire riffing and haunted house keys. Classic Kalmah, tons of guitar and keyboard soloing.

The title track is one of the best songs they’ve written, right up there with “Hades”, “Bird of Ill Omen”, and “Swamphell”. An epic keyboard line ushers in the song, leading up to a steady, fist-pumping verse. The chorus is mesmerizing with great interplay between the vocals and a meandering guitar lead. A quiet interlude precedes a solo. This album features some of the best production Kalmah has received to date, with a strong low end that you can actually hear, backing up highs that cut right through. A video was cut for “The Groan of Wind”, one of the more catchy and melodic songs on the disc. Nearly constant noodling throughout the song culminates in solo that ends the song.

I’ll admit some bias here because Kalmah plays their metal exactly as I want to hear it. But bias aside, this is a fine album by a great band. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Kalmah isn’t getting the acclaim and praise of some of their countrymates. Children of Bodom play all over the world, while a band that sounds more serious about their craft and appeals to the same crowd hardly ever leaves Finland. So to all the big record label execs that read MetalReview.com daily: give these guys a five-album, worldwide deal with touring. To all the melodic death fans out there: buy this album or be poorer for having missed out.

Truth be told, this is my favorite Kalmah album. Although I have to admit that if there were a little more of the blackish vocals mixed with the new melodic death style vocals I would like it even more. A nice balance would be great. But all in all - it made my top 10 for 2006. (Drudkha - Blood In Our Wells is #1 for me)

I agree, great band. The Kokko brothers are a great combo, and never fail to deliver. Bitter Metallic Side, Mind rust, and Groan of wind mark my fav's of the album. When I first heard it, however, I found it strange how Pekka's voice changed in this album, to a deeper growl. Although I do prefer his previous vocals, I think it's something I can easily adjust to. I still can't figure why he changed it, though. Maybe he also hears the comparisons to the COB-ish sound, and figured it was time for a change?

Wow, got this last week and I' having major trouble taking it out of my CD player...I was humming the title track all day at work. As for the CoB comparisons, I think they're actually very different bands. Aside from somewhat similar sounding instrumentation (although not so much anymore, as Are You Dead Yet? was a chugging snore-fest), Kalmah has alot more depth in terms in both their songwriting and lyrical approach. Kalmah wins for me....by alot.

The Black Waltz has been getting alot of play on my play list massive effort from Kalmah ,definetly one of the better albums so far in 2006. I enjoyed this CD just as much as their previous work. Very nice Review Tim, although I don't really have a perticular way of viewing metal CDs but this definetly has been one of the things this year that I have wanted and it delievered. It's so far tied with CoL -Somewhere along the Highway and Tool - 10,000 days for most listened albums by me. I enjoy how mellody is mixed into the whole CD without really pushing the brutality back like some Melo bands seem to do in their recent CDs-Scar Symmetry for example did not deliever as far as I'm concerned ,but this has definetly once again made me believe in the whole Melo Death Genre.

@ Swiss - Size does matter. I love moshing and have already sent more than one person bleeding from a pit because they slammed into me and I slammed back. Little 13-15 year old kids and most metal chicks do not belong in mosh pits because they will get crushed. Unless you like pain, in which case it would simply be safer to rent a dominatrix. And by bleeding I mean as in with a busted up nose cuz my elbow smacked into it when I shoved another guy. Another jumped at me and I shoved him back and he caught some huge guys shoulder with his ear and ripped out two rings. And you little people don't hit worth shit. in a mosh pit my 275 pounds beats the shit out of your 125 pounds. unless you're fat. You aren't fat are you?

I mysteriously found Kalmah in my MP3 files and it just so happened to be that the next day I was going to a local record store and they actually had a Kalmah section. Yes, a section! Not just a Kalmah CD in the "K" bin. So I picked up "Swamplord" from which the aforemented tracks were on. It's pretty good stuff and reminded me of this band Misty Fate that I had seen at a New Jersey Metalfest a few years ago, in the sense that both bands were playing extreme metal without compromising melody at least in the guitars. Of course the vocals are distorted, which is fine by me. It's not like I don't get my rocks off to Carcass records or anything. But it seems this style has been the "new sound" for the past 10 years, and Kalmah are pretty damned good at it, although they have a few elements that could be improved, such as the dry production. They need a producer who can do more than mic a Marshall stack. What I found lacking is vibrato (in the guitarists). It's something I had always overlooked myself, until recent years and a few records by Michael Schenker and Ritchie Blackmore later. Metal has been too stiff since the likes of Metallica & Slayer. I find it that almost every metal band is missing that vocal quality to the guitar playing. They get caught up in power chords and palm-muted stacatto rhythms, and open-note pedaling all the time, that most metal guitarist completely ignore different chord/diad voicings, their own sense of vibrato, and the tonal quality of the guitar (you don't need to turn your gain up to 11 to sound heavy, ya know). Let your shit breathe a little more. These are just opinions of mine, and advice to pretty much any metal guitarists out there. With those elements added to their already crushing sound, Kalmah could be at the forefront of the next wave of Euro-metal bands. Keep an eye out for these fuckers. Who knows? They might end up on a Dissection or Hypocrisy tour one of these days.

Although I admire the fact that you're not a teeny bopper retard that listens to Simple Plan, you could do without the childish name calling and the CoB fanaticism. I hate it when kids completely idolise lame weaker, commercialised bands like Bodom & Trivium, which in my opinion are the two most overrated bands to date. I finally got my hands on a copy of this. Not as good as Swampsong is, but still fucking good nevertheless. I think i'm going to have a hard time deciding on my top ten this year. Also, I agree with Lee. Insulting the child is just pathetic.

They deliver exactly what you'd expect from them, however I just can't get over how friggin repetitive, linear, and predictable this band always seems to be. I have a hard time getting over the fact that I can digest an album entirely by just a few songs. There's very little offered in the way of variety and there's very little to maintain interest. Basically put, it's another Kalmah album. Great review Tim
