Following Pale Folklore and The Mantle is not an easy task – much less improving on them – but Agalloch have done both. Ashes Against the Grain is the band’s finest full-length: a classy, pristine offering of atmospheric, apocalyptic folk/black-influenced avantgarde grey metal that no amount of adjectives can describe adequately.

A misconception, however unwarranted, is that Agalloch are pretentious and elitist when their cult followers are the ones guilty of stigma-spawning behavior. I admit that it’s difficult not to smirk when leafing through the liner notes of Ashes Against the Grain only to find JWW holding a glass of wine while facing away from the camera, or not to scoff at the group photo in which Haughm is taken aback by the size of his favorite gardening tool, murder weapon, or whatever else he uses that thing for. At the same time, the Oregonians have always been – and will most likely continue to be – a collector’s dream, considering their discography contains several pieces that are limited to 500 or 1000 copies. Their latest limited item is a logo-bearing, wooden box that houses three postcards, one sticker, one bone or bag of ashes, and the album, which brings us to the music itself.

Though all the material is strong, the highlights stand out almost on command. The melodies found in “Falling Snow,” the whole of “Not Unlike the Waves,” and the three-part epic “Our Fortress Is Burning” elevate Ashes Against the Grain to legendary status, perhaps too quickly. Still, it’s tough to argue when AAtG is polished, emotional, and most importantly, well-written music. Agalloch have never been impervious to criticism, however, and many of the same complaints will arise once the overly picky become acquainted with the group’s third LP: the production is too clean, the songs are drawn-out, the experiments with noise are ill-fitting, and Haughm’s vocals aren’t exceptional. Fair enough. But listen to “Our Fortress Is Burning: II – Bloodbirds” and tell me that the build-up isn’t spectacular, and that the world isn’t ending, and that it’s not a tragedy.

Simply put, Ashes Against the Grain may just be the best album of 2006, if not also of the past few years. I’ll be surprised if Agalloch remain relatively obscure after such a monumental accomplishment, which trumps heavyhitters such as Pale Folklore, The Mantle, and the stopgap asides. This is a brilliant, and above all, enrapturing piece of work from premiere metal artists.

This is absolutely my favorite Agalloch album. I love everything about it. It is so amazingly magical and can put me at peace no matter how I was feeling previously.

I had a Jason Jordan review binge yesterday. I'm obviously partial to this album because it's my favorite, but I definitely agree that it's their finest work to date.

I picked this up after seeing it on everyone's year end lists and i do like it alot, but i dont love it. The production feels a little stiff and dated, but this is pretty cool stuff. It takes a while to get into, but it is really cool dark building black/doom metal!

In response to my own ramblings, I picked this up quite some time ago and have to say it is better than The Mantle. Falling Snow is probably a top 15 all-time song for me. Great disc.

Better than The Mantle, not as good as The Mantle, better than The Mantle, not as good as The Mantle. I'm so confused. Don't have this one, have The Mantle, so I guess The Mantle wins. Mantle!! Mantle!!

I have heard a lot about Haughm's skill (or lack thereof) as a clean vocalist, and I have to point out that if you need proof of his mediocrity, listen to the clean vocals at 5:26 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU7urU81rJc ...Now I do realise that it's a live performance, nevertheless it is quite obvious that he is not a strong vocalist. Having said that, I think this band is very good, and the vocals aren't as bad as people make out, in fact I enjoy listening to them throughout much of the album. I did laugh at the video though. I guess I'm just immature. (Also they look like suburban teenagers or something in the vid)

Great disc. Not as good as The Mantle but it would be amazing if they could top that. Deff agree with the "PostRock" influences. The Mantle is pure 666, this one is a 6(5/5.5)6

I just now got around to checking this record out--fucking brilliant. Absolutely killer. I wish I'd listened earlier, like I should have, so it could've made my top-ten for 2006. (Not that anyone cares what my top-ten for 2006 was.)

Agalloch was the band of 2006 in my opinion. "Ashes Against The Grain" is a monumental masterpiece. Avant-garde metal at its best.

The Music on this album is fantastic, probably the best Ive heard all year. The only complaint I have is the vocals, just something about vampire-esque vocals kills the mood. Definitely a great album though.

I've enjoyed everything I've heard by Agalloch. From the beautiful instrumentals from The Mantle to the increased electric guitars in Ashes Against the Grain. I generally don't listen to The Grain, but everything else just amazes me. I love it when the rhythm kicks in on Limbs and the basswork on Not Unlike the Waves.

This is a band with talent but I'm not blown away by this. The snare drum sound is annoying as hell. The noise tracks??? Why? What is that about?? People have mentioned that some of the track drag and could be cut down. I agree. There are parts of the this CD that make me think, "These guys are trying to be progressive just to be progressive," as in "Let's put in another riff that doesn't really add to the song." I don't want to be too negative. There are some good songs/moments. They have way of blending a nice rhythm guitar pattern with a melodic lead. That's what they do best. It's an average CD but nothing earth shattering...IMHO.

Yeah the first ambient track isn't that great but its only 1:40 so its not like its unbearable to listen to. And I like the ending track. Im not sure if all of you who don't like the ambient stuff have heard Odal(Nothing Remix) from The Grey EP, now that is boring ambient. our fortress is burning III: the grain is probably the best ambient song from agalloch so far and it does plently more then hold my attention.

@ Agarwaen: In an interview on Ruthlessreviews, Mike from Opeth says the same thing (http://ruthlessreviews.com/reviews.cfm/id/1080/page/opeth_mike.html): "You can’t say that we do nothing new and then say that you worship Agalloch and the likes who sound like we did 13 years ago."

I don't see what's so great about this band. Their music sounds like it was made at least 10 years ago, boring uninspired songwriting, extremely old-fashioned riffing, though I do like some of the melancholic atmospheres. I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but hasn't this kinda sound been made already a decade ago?

In my mind, Ashes is unquestionably better than The Mantle. I really liked the Mantle, but I didn't feel that all of their elements were blended together enough. It just seemed the track orderwas an instrumental, followed by a "real" song, followed by an instumental, and so on. Also, "I Am the Black Doors" really did not have the right atmosphere at the beginning and took away from the impact of the album, and I really didn't think that the mix that they got was the best sound for them. It was too dry, whereas the mix of Ashes is warmer and more suitable for their sound. The Mantle had amazing songs, like "You Were But a Ghost in My Arms", "...And the Great Cold Death of the Earth", and "A Desolation Song", but Ashes is much more cohesive. And I agree with Greg, the last noise track is a perfect end to the album.

Actually it was the new drummer Chris Greene who programmed the two noise tracks. While the shorter one is pretty pointless, I think the one that ends the album is very good. Overall this is a great album, one of the first in a LONG time to enrapture me completely.

Great album, although the noise tracks have got to go!! Somebody has to tell their bass player that nobody wants any fucking influence from his shitty noise/ambient "Nothing" project to seep into the Agalloch albums, damn it!!

yes, the instrumental/noise tracks don't do anything for the album, and this on the whole is nothing compared to the previous 2 albums. i don't think this is a 'legendary' work, but enjoy their earlier music. best cd of the year? nein! kalmah-black waltz, devin townsend-synchestra, amorphis-eclipse

this is a great disc.... but it is nowhere even close to the mantle. there is way way too much filler on this disc. the noise tracks are worthless. sometimes the songs get way too long and could be cut down to make the songwriting better. a great release, but this isn't even agalloch's best release... let alone the best disc this year. following the mantle, ths is a disappointment.

I really like Agalloch; I think these guys are great musicians and know how to evoke a certain melancholic mood that suits me perfectly on some days. At times the songs on both this album and the Mantle can go on too long to the point of being repetetive, and the clean vocals are not the strongest, but overall Agalloch is one of my favorite non-metal metal bands!

This disc sounds very good through headphones. Kind of agree that the 2 "noise" tracks are pretty worthless, but the rest is pretty damn stellar. Doesn't quite get to me like The Mantle does, but it'll definitely do. Oh, and I think the vocals fit just fine. I was suprised when I first heard the cleans on The Mantle after hearing none on Pale Folklore but it didn't take long to see where he was going with it. Dude's got an odd voice, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
