Last year, Scar Symmetry’s debut album Symmetric in Design topped my year-end list. Naturally, my expectations were pretty high for this new album, released so shortly after their last album. And I had a weird experience upon first listen, the album didn’t do anything for me, and sounded like they had been listening to too much prog metal. Must’ve been that crack I was smoking, as one or two listens later, the album was on “Repeat”.

They have expanded somewhat on their all-inclusive, modern, melodic death metal sound. Whereas before they sounded a lot like what Soilwork was going for (big solos and synthesizers, choppy riffs, clean/harsh singing), on this album, they stretch out the vocals a bit more. Alvestam’s clean vocal patterns are a bit more power/prog-ish, reminding me of Symphony X in spots, and he adds a harsh bark to go along with his ferocious death growls. Definitely one of the best vocalists in metal today. The song structures are certainly poppy, creating songs with unlimited Headbanger’s Ball potential, but the hooks and guitarwork are so solid that it doesn’t hold them back. A top-notch studio mix can’t hurt either.

The new influences can be heard on songs like “Dreaming 24/7”, where initial shredding turns into a clean guitar/clean vocal verse. Backing grunts add a small margin of testosterone to the chorus which sounds straight out of some of the prog I’ve reviewed here, like Stride and Space Odyssey. The songs seem built around the vocals, as most of the rhythm riffs complement the singing, rather than outshining Alvestam. In this way, some of the transitions can seem awkwards, as listening to a vocal-less copy of this album might leave some people scratching their heads, wondering about some of these abrupt transitions.

“The Illusionist” is the opening track and it enters under atmospheric synths, before kicking into a set of riffs that are instantly identifiable to owners of their last album. A sweet solo comes right where you’d expect it to. “Calculate the Apocalypse” is their heaviest song, with a monstrous opening growl over fearsome drumwork. Loud and boisterous, this song will definitely please the SYL fans. Finishing out our promo (which I think is missing a pair of songs), is the rocking “Path of Least Resistance”. They throw a changeup by pairing a serious throat-scarring chorus with fast and upbeat verses.

Scar Symmetry stay the course set by their stellar debut album, as I’d expect nothing less from a group of metal professionals. Coming from a set of guys with a metal pedigree of Carnal Forge, Theory in Practice, Unmoored, and Centinex, a high level of quality is assured, and they don’t disappoint. They combine many elements of modern metal, but pull it off with a flair and fluidity that few can match.

I think this is definitely Scar Symmetry's best album so far, they cover everything that should be in whatever genre they are (if anyone knows) They do admittedly sound similar to both Soilwork and CHimaira. That being said, its nice that some of their songs can be heavy and still use the kind of synths that really makes "The Illusionist" come to life.

Great stuff here. The death vox are so different from the clean. Great melodies and riffs. Just brilliant stuff. They tread the Opeth path. They tread it well. Its different to Opeth in many ways of course, and maybe comparisons are not valid. But it gives me the same sort of euphoria when a beautiful passage emerges out of chaos. This never derives itself from blast beat DM but rather a more retsrained thrash metal aesthetic. It is cool and compsosed. There are keyboards, but never overused. I am amazed at the influences... great album that could have done with more clean vox but it survives it DM roots to be a masterpiece of what is possible in the DM genre...

Oh, I'm sure everyone here has done this, but JUST IN CASE: Check out Morphegenesis (the new track on Myspace). It's a groove-laden, wicked fucking assault with a chorus that will stick in your head like a poorly aimed dart at a bar. Somewhere inbetween... man, fuck, I dunno anymore. Poppy, deathy, proggy. I just hope, if the entire album has been slowed down to this mid-paced Pantera-ish groove, that it's all this good. I'm actually hoping that they've managed to expand their musical base and this is just another thing to add to their sonic attack.

I just picked up this album yesterday and immediately went out and got their first CD right after that. If Scar Symmetry is just another gay melodeath band, then sign me up on the gay melodeath fanclub, because this shit is fucking killer. Right now I have Deviate From Form on repeat. The chorus is unbelievably catchy, and these guys are no slouches in the songwriting department. Absolutely perfect melodic metal. They toe the line between progressive, death, modern rock, and even a little bit of power metal with grace and deliver a thick, layered, and excellently done album that manages to make the verse/chorus/verse song structure sound exciting. How I slept on these guys is beyond me. I listen to a lot of progressive, grindcore, and melodeath, and Scar Symmetry is just what the doctor ordered after the collosal flop that was In Flames last album.

I just finally got this album, and it's really cool. I think I'm actually feelin' it more than Symmetric in Design, just because it is a little heavier. Don't get me wrong, I dig the clean vocals and stuff, but after a while that gets a little old for me, this disc doesn't over-do the clean singing. "The Kaleidoscope God" is freakin' awesome.

This cd rocks...the singer does sounds like the guy from Symphony X on the clean vox, which is good, The productions is much better on this cd then the last one, much deeper on the bass. Between this cd and Mercenary's Hours that remain I am satisfied .

I thought it sounded really rushed and came off sounding far too cheesy. It wasn't, "bad," but it fell into the, "mediocre," category. Definitely NOT as good as their debut imo.

This is easily one of the best melodic death metal records of the year, if not the decade. I put it up there with Opeth's Still Life, Hypocrisy's s/t, and Soilwork's Natural Born Chaos.

this is one of the better metal albums in the past few years, in my opinion. i agree that it is, as some have said below, an update on the sound in flames and soilwork were shaping prior to adpoting their current uninspired sound. however i also think this album is better in many ways when stacked inch for inch against the best of any bands working with the more 'atmospheric' melodic thrash of in flames, dark tranquillity, soilwork, etc. i think mostly this has to do with two things- a) scar symmetry can write hooks AND, as important, songs in which the hooks work and b) their singer can actually sing and scream beyond competently in both. either way yah slice it, great album.

Just picked up this and Symmetric in Design. I'm floored by this band. They have everything latter day In Flames/Soilwork type bands are lacking. I'm not one of the "must be tr00" people that hate the style, I'm pretty much a fan of poppier stuff like this. Most of the time, those other bands do a fair job with the musicianship and songwriting, but SS do it very well almost without fail. Alvestam is the man. The bottom line with Scar Symmetry is that they provide the best version of Pop-Gothenburg you will hear.

I don't get the worship with this album. Sure it's fucking good - it's motherfucking Scar Symmetry! It just seems really lacking in comparison to that of Symmetric In Design. The song writing is weaker, the songs are dragged out and the vocals are more one-sided per song, rather than being 50/50 like SID. I was severly let down by this album. Best songs = The Illusionist & Deviate From The Form. Nothing else really grabbed my attention.

It is always hard for any artist to top their past successors, and that is basically what most fans want out of their favorite bands. Scar Symmetry is one of my favorites and it has definitely beaten Symmetric in Design. THE best album of 2006 is already here.

I'm blown away. Symmetric in Design found itself in my CD player constantly. Now, I rarely pull it out, and instead resign myself to pulling a few favorite tracks from it. And it's all because Pitch Black Progress is that damn good. I'm not sure what it is, but their songwriting and individual performances have progressed amazingly for a band that's been around for such a short time. Like the reviewer, I was first sort of worried about the prog-like vocals after I first heard Calculate the Apocalypse. Now I barely notice. The only song that doesn't completely compel me in this 13 track monster is Dreaming 24/7, which leaves an incredible 12/13 success rate (and I don't dislike Dreaming either). And maybe they'll just always have a thing for making closing songs I love, because Eleventh Sphere closed out Symmetric as one of my favorite songs ever. Now Deviate From the Form has topped that. Now just need them to come to North America with some kickass merch.

Amazing! Scar Symmtry is exactly what I look for in a band. Brutality, creativeness, good vocals & musicianship and a little atmosphere. This album mixes it up a little more than than Symmetric in Design but they are both amazing albums. IMO Christian Alvestam is one of the best metal singers gracing us today. I expect really big things out of these guys.

Oh my f...g god. This band is AMAZING. The album is killing killer. The soilwork comparisons may be a little right. I see similarities in some parts, where keyboards take over with melodies, while guitars play totally rythmic. But only this. I also see some SYL(melodic bridges) and MESHUGGAH(rhythms and some riffs) influences here. It's pity genrising this as melodeath coz it's more than that. In lil words it's something between cyber-thrash/math and power. Pretty challenging e? The vocals are all great thrashy, death(especially) and clean. I'd give 5.5/5.5/6. Totally recommended to open minded ppl. The others it's possibly you'll like it but i'm not 100% sure. P.S Am i the only one seeing the SYL?MESHUGGAH influence.

This is an album that I really expected to be one of the best of the year. I gotta say that my first listen was a bit painfull and I didnt like what I heard. After few more listen I got into it and now I like it but it's far behind their previous masterpiece Symmetry in Design because they pushed too far with the clean vocal. A little bit of clean is ok but too much is not.

I really don't like this album ,which is a shame because I really liked their previous work. The thing that bugs me about this album is the powerish clean vocals. On the previous album they just did'nt sound like that. Also I do feel that as far as the harmony and melody this album just doesnt find the right balance on most tracks between the melodic parts and the more hard hitting one's. This album has been a big disapointment for me, but that's just my opinion if you like power metal and would like to check out more extreme version's of it SS's new album was made for you.

One of best albums of 2006. so far! "Symmetric In Design" was a GREAT album but this is little better! Real masterpiece!!! Many so-called popular melodic death metal bands (In Flames, Soilwork...) can't get even close with their last couple of releases to Scar Symmetry. That's how good they are! Together with Dark Tranquillity, Kalmah, Nightrage, Mors Principium Est, Skyfire, Dissection... their will carry on a melodic death metal flag in the future! HAIL SCAR SYMMETRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a diehard SYL fan, and I find absoultely nothing redeeming this album. The fact that critics fellate this band and sugary schlock like them is part of the reason why most non-melodic death heads think that the genre is dying. This sounds what would happen if like Journey moved to Gothenburg.
