If I say heavy metal to you and you think of abstract and hollow soundscapes that drag on for ten minutes without getting anywhere, I think we may be unable to communicate at all. Yes, I know that there are a few metal bands who have used this technique from time to time, notably Godflesh and Neurosis. But they mainly played songs and used soundscapes to “spice up” their records. The key to the success of these things was in their unexpectedness. They fit what the bands were doing, but were a separate idea. They caught you on the edge of your seat waiting for the hammer to fall and when it didn’t you grinned and said to yourself “got me, fuckers”. It made the rest of the record somehow fuller and more satisfying.

Celestial is not giving you that at all. Instead they are boring you with nothing but soundscapes. Hollow, repetitive and ultimately pointless audio paintings, about as compelling as a Velvet Elvis without the black light. I don’t take drugs, I don’t wear corpse paint and I don’t have time to waste listening to mood music for shitty History Channel programs. Again, if I say heavy metal and this springs to mind you don’t fucking get it and will never get it.

Now, having said all that…if I were a LARP geek I might find this shit kind of…soothing…sometimes. If suicidal goth pricks ever want to relax in a rose petalled bath surrounded by scented candles and copies of their shitty poetry this might be just the thing. In other words I can hear…”value”… in this. Not for me - Jesus H Christ in my colon no. But maybe for someone. I just refuse to believe that someone reads MetalReview.com.

So the bottom line is that this ambient, moody piece of crap is only for those truly desperate to be outsiders. And maybe for someone shooting a better remake of King Kong or something. It’s not heavy metal, though, and it doesn’t even compare well to other soundscapers, movie sound trackers and acid droppers. Avoid.

Well the fact that the reviewer wrote Celestial instead of Celestiial says it all about his knowledge on the band or the genre... Next time you want to do a review get someone who knows the genre instead of someone who says " If I say heavy metal "

I think someone with an appreciation for doom metal should've been asked to review this... I agree with those who say that if you do not like the slowness and monotomy of a doom album, and can only get your kicks from thrashy blastbeats and kerrrazy riffs, there is no way you will like this album. If you do like doom, you will realise this is in fact a worthy release. "It's not heavy metal" - well of course not, it's doom. Hello?? You shouldn't have reviewed this, you're making me cry.

I don't know. I love Catacombs. I have to give this a listen; then I'll see if Sessions is on the mark. I mean, he is an asshole, but he is usually on the mark.

You obviously hate this kind of music, most ppl do ,their minds dont refer to it. for us few that this music opens inner portals for, its pure transmution into a beuty filled dark void ;) Not for ppl with short atention span :P

I don't get it really. But I've seen a couple of drone type bands (Halo, Thrones) live and both times I've been mesmerized. I think that may well be the best setting to experience it. I've often heard that Sunn0))) have amazing concerts, and I can totally believe that. I don't think the style is worth totally panning if you don't get it. I'm sure someone will now tell me that none of those bands are funeral doom, but you know what I'm on about. Slow stuff, you know... Celestial... that reminds me, I saw Isis the other night and they were incredible.

I completely understand why some would not like this album or genre (woodland funeral doom), but I read metalreview regularly (for years now) and love it.

This is a funeral doom record, with definite dark ambient overtones. If you were expecting "riffs" or definite hooks, then I can understand the dissapointment. "Desolate North" is all about vibe... some get it and appreciate this album, others don't. Either way.... thanks for the review. -Marty "money bags" Worm

Ring Bindrune Recordings and score your son a deal... then take the Macauly Culkin school of parenting and steal all of his money. Think about it, you are making money by a) doing nothing and b) stooging the aforementioned suicidal goth pricks. It's win/win man!

Production = below average Songwriting = next to none Musicianship = very little When my son was three he had a fisher price keyboard that could also make drum sounds. He was better.
