Ill admit it; I have not heard a single album beyond the seminal Roots and I have never even heard a single note from Derrick Green since he replaced Max Cavalera; Against, Nation and Roorback. Never heard ‘em. So with that it’s hard for me to gauge how Dante XXI stands up to the rest of the post-Max Cavelera era Sepultura. That being said, just from listening to Dante XXI and researching the response to prior albums, I can safely say Dante XXI is Sepultura’s best album since Derrick Green took over.

Heck, Dante XXI is just a flat good thrash album regardless of any previous pre Max and post Max leanings. There seems (and again I can only say this based on research) to be a return to more tribal, organic themes above and beyond the albums titular namesake. Dante XXI displays some orchestration, strings, cellos, chants and such with far less of a Nu metal, predictable chunk as I gather the last few albums had. The tempos and moods on Dante XXI are incredibly varied, and to be honest, if the album had not been called Dante XXI and you didn’t have the song titles, you’d be hard pressed to determine the albums theme (Dante’s The Divine Comedy) as Sepultura seem to have let out all the stops within the structures of thrash metal.

After instrumental opener “Lost” and the menacing and percussive but brief lurch of “Dark Wood of Error” the seething “Convicted in Life” reeks of an angry, unfettered Sepultura, finally free of the Roadrunner gleaned era. “City of Dis” sees the albums first foray into more tribal elements and pacing with ominous lumber and subtle monkish chants amid the rumbling thrash. “False” cranks up the intensity again while “Fighting On” staggers with heaviness and both come across as vehemently metal as I’ve heard the band in a decade. However, on Dante XXI, what stood out for me was the use of dramatic strings, keys and cellos on a few tracks signified by Dante’s shift into purgatory, it also signifies the album’s shift into more epic, adventurous structures. Starting with “Limbo” and bleeding into the massively epic standout “Ostia”, Sepultura show they are still a musical force to be reckoned with regardless of who is singing for them. “Burning Words” is a bit of a hardcore-ish letdown from the previous track, though the lumbering “Nuclear Seven” makes up for it.

The good thing about Dante XXI is that its never stationary for long as the 15 track including a few interludes (“Lost”,“Euno”, “Limbo”, “Primium Mobile”), are as varied and to the point as they can be without wandering or being too busy and unfocussed. Even with the levels of evolution, the band falls back on solid straight up thrash (“Crown and Miter”-orchestral thrash?) or a solid mid paced bruising. Even closer, “Still Flame”, though barely metal, is still a introspective and well placed album closer considering the theme and albums intensity up to its close.

Those, like me that lost interest in Sepultura after Chaos AD or Roots, should definitely give a Sepultura the respect of giving them another go around as they appear to be back up their old tricks as Dante XXI is a very good, Green fronted album finally worthy of the band’s legacy.

Roots was the most mainstream sounding album ever and It should never have gotten as big as it did. Plain and simple: SHITTY

Hmmmm. i dunno this album confuses me. Its deffinitely better than roots and its followers. Some really cool tracks in here. I think its not bad as an album abit weird tho. Still it confuses me becoz i cant decide if i like it or not(and ive heard it many times). Some tracks are very bad thts why.. I suggest you buy it if u find it cheap. By the way both cavaleras are gone now(coz igor left the band) so propably bubai sepultura. I dont think they will put out anything listenable from now on. But you know i dont like to run into conclusions.. still its abit obvious the band is not going fine after roots. Anyways gonna check their next(if there will be one) but dunno if i buy it.

Fuck Max, Derrick is a more aggressive and better ranged vocalist anyway. Soulfly are a stain; at least Sepultura are still making an effort.

This has been in my CD player for 2 weeks now, and I think it's a great CD. One of the best releases this year.

I wouldnt say Sepultura are speed metal, Once they hit Chaos ad they have kept the groove laden slower feel. I havent heard roarback. But I have seen Derrick Green live and the dude is a fucking beast live. He has a massive growl and emense stage presence. Ill pick it up.Hell Id rather have them shift their sound than rehash arise or chaos ad.

Sepultura is a great metal band.I´m sick of people who keep sayin that "they´re not the same w/o Max crap". Well, if any of you losers can create a better tune than Convicted In Life or rock one goddam show as hard as they do, then you´re the new Max Cavalera, sucker.

Sepultura is the most incredible speed metal band on the planet. Arise, Chaos A.D., and Beneath the Remains says it all, but ever since Max left it has been somewhat traumatic without him. Though the album is still worth the listen, they will never be as good without Max involved.

Please explain Goldfish podge...it was important enough for you to say twice. I set up the rview by explaining i have not heard any post roots albums, and im not going to buy them just to fill in gaps for this review.

I honestly can not get into Sepultura anymore. After Roots, I lost all interest, as did most people. And its not that Max leaving really had that much to do with the direction they were going in. Max's band, Soulfly, sucks as well.

You call yourself a reviewer? What a crap review. What research did you do? Obviously not the most important - listen to their other albums if you want to make a comparison. Your assumptions are ridiculous. If you can't be arsed to do the propper research - then don't do the review.

Finally-a return to greatness! Sepultura finally have begun to grow as metal artists. After seeming to be at a loss of ideas for years .this is their most creative, progressive and interesting artistic statement since "Arise", with incredible artwork and an eerie intensity. The slow, heavy riffs just crush, and the strange middle-eastern sounding album closer kind of reminds me of Nile. The concept seems to be based on Dante's journey through hell in the Diving Comedy juxtaposed with political commentary on contemporary events....pretty orginal stuff..... Hell yeah.

this band has always been boring, with the exception of "Sarcastic Existence"

There are plenty people to blame for Sepultura's shittiness, Derrick Greene is not one of them. If anything, they're still wallowing in the Tribal Influence that Max brought in with Roots. As long as Andreas Kisser keeps writing boring riffs and awful solos, the blame for Sepultura's fall from grace can rest on him.

This is by far the best post-max album. Those of you turned away by the poorer more recent efforts, give this one a go cos it kicks some serious ass and is a lean album that doesn't fuck about. There's tons of thrashy goodness, and the experimental stuff is used sparingly, so far more effective for it. Tasty angry thrash plus a little bit of an epic scope on some tunes = finally a solid post max effort. 8/10 easy. Besides, what more do people want out of them? They're never gonna be back with max, Derrick greene is a solid vocalist and fucking fearsome live, and it's pretty damn thrashy and aggressive - so raise a beer to the old sepultura and get with the new one. They've still got it.

This is a great album. Try to listen to it with an open-mind. If you can listen to it without forgetting about Max, then, you'll lose. More for us! Solid album. Better than most of the shit coming out right now.

I like the album. No, not a masterpiece, but satisfying to listen to and as others have said, it would slay to hear these tracks live.

Saw these guys last night as I had been waiting years to see them... they were amazing. I am not the biggest fan of this album, but the songs DO slay live. Derrick Green is among the best frontmen I've ever seen.

Arise is my favourite by far. This is the best of the DG albums. I'll still go see them live. They tear you a new arsehole live still. DG is a huge bugger on stage with a big presence but alas no Max.

I thought this was quite poor. Probably the best of the DG albums but that`s hardly a compliment. Chaos AD was the last decent thing they did - Arise the last classic.

I made the mistake of introducing myself to this band with Roots. Some one had to nearly force me to give then another chance after hearing that worthless excuse for an album. The non-Calvera albums had a few decent moments, but were absolutely mediocre in every possible way. I might give this one a listen of I see it somewhere, but it's definately not a priority. Schizophrenia is where it's at for Sepultura.

It's worth listening to this album. They had it streaming somewhere a while back (yeah, that was specific...) and it is a good solid lump of thrash. I dug it, not only was it some quality thrashing it also sounded like they meant it. I'll be picking up this album sooner or later.

"Bestial Devastation", "Morbid Visions". "Schizophrenia", "Beneath The Remains", "Arise", "Chaos A.D." These are some of the greatest thrash metal albums ever recorded and all you really need by this band. "Roots" and everything after are a total waste of time.

Give it a go it grows on you. Sepultura are my favourite band. Their work since Max left has left me wondering. This album is their best since ROOTS but yeah it does miss the second guitar. Worth the money for sure.

As much as I liked Sepultura, they're really really getting old and we can hear it. I understand that some band want to move on and try some new stuff but I think it's getting worst and worst with Sepultura. I was a PRETTY big fan in 1995 to 1999 if I remember when they did Against but after that it became IMO totall bullshit coming from some old guys that have totally lost it. I can't listen to any Sepultura album without remembering Arise and Chaos AD and even Roots... What the hell happened to these guys ? How can they still do music after all these MasterPiece... Against was hard to like but I finally got deep into it and it was the last time ever I listen a sepultura album with that love in mind. Sepultura seems sooo fade with 1 guitar that it's not even funny and this CD make not exeption. I dont like to base my critism on older stuff but it's too hard without comparing this stuff to the old. IMO Dante is the best they put out since Against but really not what I want coming from these guys. If I was not biased as a fan that like more the old Sepultura inclusing ROOTS, I would maybe dig more into this album but unfortunatly, I can't and I wont understand ever what happened to these guys since 1996. I'd give it a 4/4.5/4
