By all rights, Armageddon March Eternal should be a fucking home run of a death metal album. A grand slam, even; The Project Hate certainly have all of the resources required for a solid-gold release available to them. Here we’ve got a band that features an all-star lineup (members of Entombed, Grave, Two-Ton Predator, Evergrey, Leukemia, ad infinitum), an extremely distinctive and well-defined sound, and a production by the always-masterful Dan Swanö. There’s no good reason that we shouldn’t have a masterwork from an experienced band on our hands.

Yet we don’t. Armageddon March Eternal is a pretty solid album by an immensely promising band that’s slipping towards stagnation. Obviously, something went wrong here.

So what happened? It’s certainly got nothing to do with the album’s sound, as Swanö’s done a predictably excellent job this time around. Petter Freed’s guitars hum with that deliciously Stockholm buzz, while Jörgen Sandström and the excellent Jo Enckell trade death growls and gorgeous melodies back and forth with perfect clarity. Founding member Lord K. Philipson’s programming has become even more prevalent but is very carefully balanced with the traditional instrumentation; the most notable improvement that Armageddon March Eternal makes on its predecessors is the further integration of death metal backbone, programmed bells’n’whistles and Enckell’s soaring vox into one unified whole. Obviously The Project Hate’s failings don’t include a stale sound; it can safely be said that no other band mixes stout Swedish death metal, soaring female vox, and glasses-pushed-up-on-nose electronica in any capacity whatsoever.

And so The Project Hate are endowed with an excellent production, an extremely deep well of metal veteranship, an incredibly ambitious concept, and a list of backing vocalists that includes about 80% of all Swedish death metal frontmen ever (well, not really, but you get the idea). All that’s left is the execution, and like so many others, that’s where this bunch slips up.

Take a look back at The Project Hate’s catalogue, if you will. Take a spin through their discography and listen to a variety of tracks from each album. What’s that you say? They’re all eight to ten minute mid-paced death metal songs with lengthy electronic interludes grafted to the sepulcher-slammin’ arrangements? Well, goddamn if that doesn’t sound like an accurate description of Armageddon March Eternal as well. The Project Hate has more or less failed to notably progress since their inception as a band, and Armageddon March Eternal isn’t far removed from the admirable Hate, Dominate, Congregate, Eliminate as an album. Make no mistake, they can certainly churn out amazing riffs and hooky Mediterranean vocal lines like that’s their calling; see “We Couldn’t Be Further From the Truth,” “Godslaughtering Murder Machine,” “At the Entrance to Hell’s Unholy Fire,” and “Resurrected for Massive Torture” for evidence. Simultaneously, though, there’s only so many times you can write a ten-minute one-tempo death metal song, electronics or no, without retreading a lot of ground. I know that death metal as a genre has a pretty massive redundancy crush and that demanding originality on every release from the same band is pretty ridiculous, but when said band has as ambitious a formula as The Project Hate has, I don’t think hoping for a bit of development over four studio albums is entirely unwarranted. Maybe it’s because the band’s songwriting ingredients are so forward-thinking or because The Project Hate is a supergroup in the truest sense of the term, but either way, the utter dearth of musical development on Armageddon March Eternal is supremely disappointing. As great as the individual moments are, each overextended death march feels like a repetition of earlier material.

And so Philipson and friends have done little but uphold their own standard. Sure, the songs are pretty damn fun to listen to, and the band’s stylings are incredibly novel (particularly for a death metal band). But if you’ve got any of their back catalogue, are you sure you really want eight more marathon tracks about how much Jörgen Sandström hates Christianity? Come for Jo Enckell, come for the excellent guitar tone, come for the way-left-of-center paradigm. Just don’t come expecting anything resembling artistic progress.

Where is the death metal in this thing? This is not a death metal album. It's gothic electronica and I really want my fucking money back.

Though I respect the reviewer's opinion I can quite honestly say I absolutely love this album and would never ever call it boring or even repetitive. The songs are indeed very lenghty but I don't feel this is exaggerated: every chord spent is absolutely necessary to preserve the sense of completeness and all-around perfection this album embodies. I find it a bit irrational to expect a band that sits so comfortably at the pinnacle of their hybrid genre to further mature and/or evolve. After all, how do you expect these guys to improve when there's not really anything that can be improved? Sure, they could start churning out shorter songs but it'd destroy the epic feeling the current material evokes. This deserves at least a 5 for songwriting.

lol, what should we expect, they switch over to Britney Spears style teen pop midway through, a shocking guest appearance from Fred Durst doing shout outs to Satan on the last track? I think we get what we are getting into from your well written review Doug

And when you're at it, remember that by buying the album you're signing up for a bunch more songs just like that one.

this is the first time ive heard of this band, and based on not knowing there earlyer work and also based only on the song "at the entrance to hells unholy fire" which you can download of there website I would say this is some of the best sounding symphonic black/death whatever I've heard. and based on this i would also give the song wirting a much hight score I agree with sol381, cd's should all be reviewed soley on the quality of that cd, not the average production of the genre or the past works of a group.

Jackson: Yes, the site's been around for a few years now. www.globaldomination.se is the URL for it. Check it out if you ever feel like it. About the song-writing score that is in debate; I fully respect Doug's opinion on the matter. This is what we sound like, you know. This is how we do our shit, and it's not likely to change on coming albums. Be it a 3.5 or a 6, it's not important, it's created like this on purpose. Hell, Doug could have given it a 1 for all that matters. Atlantic: Carnal Forge? Except for them not sounding anything remotely close to us, being a full-on thrash-assault with no keyboards, electronics nor death metal influences, I definitely agree, haha... Eggsa: You have some valid points there, for sure, but then again, respect Doug's take on the thing. What we do can never be appreciated by everyone, and that's not expected either. Thanx for yer time, guys.

First time I've ever completely disagreed with an MR review. I think this album is the biggest evolution yet for TPH. I do actually prefer HDCE a big more just because it's such an easy listening (without being overly easy) and I can get anyone into it. They seemed to tone down on the electronics for this album and focused more on "real" instruments. Maybe they used just as much but the instruments tune it out or something...I need to listen to it again, only heard it like 15 times. I guess I can see why someone would get bored on this album though. Without all the electronic solos and weird things the songs seem to drag on just a bit but not to the point of bringing the songwriting down that much. 6/5/6 for me. I'm just going to keep rambling. Sweet Jesus what are you talking about? "...how much Jorgen Sandstrom hates Christianity..." What!? That's part of this band, just like the electronics! It's like Cannibal Corpse singing about mutilated families. Or Britney Spears singing about whatever she sings about. The point is, they're a fun listen and to bash them for not evolving (which in my mind they actually evolved a bit too much with this album) is ridiculous. I make them sound way less than they are though by saying they're fun and not overly easy...They're just excellent.

The middle score here is for songwriting , not originality.A lot of members of this site are finding out about this band and many more for the first time and therfore would not have any back catalogue.. When they see a 3 for songwriting they would instantly think that it is very average. If these songs are in fact similar to their first few albums and they get 5 for songwriting then this deserves the same.. You guys need to review albums on their own, not as opposed to their recent work or even compared to other bands. Same goes for reviewing bm albums and giving a 3 for production when the production is clear and lucid. Judge it on the album not on the genre of music.

bah this sounds exactly like all of their other albums. they remind me of carnal forge - the first album is decent and you can't wait to hear what they do next, then 3 albums later your still hearing the exact same songs/structures/vocals/lyrics/keyboards, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

Jackson: Yes, there's another calm tune on this one, and you'll probably hate it even more than "Weep", I'm sad to say. Just download the damn thing and see for yourself. Oki, I'm out of here. You behave now, you hear?

their last album did get boring after like 50 listens, but that's still better than most of the crap that's put out these days; i may end up getting this doug, does this have any ballad-y tracks like "Weep" off of HDCE? i fucking hate that song, almost ruined the album for me

I hope you guys didn't get the wrong idea. This is a really good album, but they've been writing almost the exact same nine minute song over and over for years. The novelty value is kinda wearing off at this juncture.
