I sincerely hope this is a joke band. Calling themselves ‘Redneck Black Metal’, Illinois’ Blood Cult purveys a sort of lo-fi horror/stoner–ish black metal with some off the wall stuff randomly thrown in. Black metal purists will hate the band's semi non-serious approach and will just cringe at the band's (intentional?) jabs at the more serious side of the scene while other less elite fans will be simply confused by Blood Cult’s unusual creativity that never quite manifests itself in memorable songs.

Armed with a decent, fuzzed out production and all manner of un-black metal quirks, the 8 tracks on We Who Walk Behind the Rows are a varied lot that never gets predictable, but that might be their downfall, especially with less open minded black metal fans. From the rock gait of “Psychic Vampire” and “Cheap Guitars”, through the (strangely enjoyable) piano outro off “Mowcaqua Coal Mine Disaster”, the competent blackened “A Blaze in Midwest Sky” style of the title track and “Cult in Blood”, the desperate chug of “Owl”, Blood Cult refuse to paint themselves into a bloody pentagram and seem content to rock the black metal boat. Still though, an off kilter approach doesn’t always mean ‘good’ as Blood Cult are hampered by a split personality that sees them flirt with the more serious side of things as seen on the aforementioned title track and “Blood Cult” and the down right silly (“Redneck Black Metal”, “Illinoisan Thunder”); a mix that won't resonate with any particular group of fans.

I applaud Blood Cult for trying something different and not taking themselves too seriously, but at 27 minutes with 8 songs, We Who Walk Behind the Rows feels like a gimmick EP, and throw in the jarring shifts from ‘real’ black metal to psychedelic fuzzed rock metal, the vocals that despite the style, stay singularly black metal (except “Cheap Guitars”), the album just doesn’t stick beyond somewhat of a novelty album.

Apparently you are too "true" to pick out good music. Who cares if it doesn't stay in the "almighty black metal guidelines"? If every band released music within these "guidelines", everything would sound the same. So, I give Blood Cult horns held high for doing something different and kicking ass at it. Since you don't like Blood Cult, you should check out another of Rev's projects, Tjolgtjar ( http://tjolgtjar.metalhordes.com ). Oh, wait, it's not "true" Black Metal, you wouldn't like it. Sorry.

What kinda stupid fucked up band would call themselves rednecks? It's like saying "yes, i'm proud of the fact that my cousin is my girlfriend" I'm not going to waste my time on hillbillies with guitars. Fucking lame.

"I sincerely hope this is a joke band." Yes, because white rednecks shouldn't play metal. Nice Sevendust ad banner.

"Redneck black metal"? Sounds to me like an American version of Phazm, which, if that were the case, would be awesome.

This band has been around since the '90s. If the new wave of black metal fans want old style BM they can listen to the older albums, though I tend to question any "true fan" that hasn't already heard the old tapes and discs.

i just went to the label's site and checked this band out because the term "redneck black metal" intrigued me and i definitely think this band rules, but they do seem sort of gimmicky.

these guys have been around since 95' and they do a different kind of black metal that i really enjoy. i'm a die hard black metal fan of the old and new, you can't say that people like me wouldn't like it. i have this album along with demos and they are a truely an eccentric heavy band as dr. m said. the song psychic vampire is one of the best tunes on this album. and not for nothing, these guys are serious about their music and it does appeal to a large group of people.

I am Illinois born and bred, lived amongst the cornfields most of my life, and these guys are one of the best fuckin' bands in the State. Great raw metal with a real rocking primtive feel that veers between very Norse sounding black metal and crazed "rawk" like an evil Nashville Pussy. The vocals sound totally inhuman and match up with any Norse troll out there. This is off the wall, eccentric, violent and heavy...recommended to people that dislike metalcore or symphonic too-glossy black metal...
