Album Review

Helloween are past their creative peak. That's obvious. And so, like many creatively bankrupt act's have done, they've decided to pillage their back catalog in hopes of capitalizing on their respectable legacy. Like many works of self-plagiarism, Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy will likely be touted as a return to form by devout fans desperate for something worthwhile to cling to from a band that has been spiraling into mediocrity for over 15 years.

Legacy, a double album , is absolutely overwrought by compositions that yearn to be epic, but ultimately play as overwritten. Helloween compensate for their lack of new ideas by stacking old ones on top of each other, hoping that by some divine alchemy they can create evocative music. They fail. "The King for One Thousand Years" and "Occasion Avenue", both which eclipse 11 minutes, eventually build up to parts that are enjoyable in the blatantly self-referential sense, but are neither worth their remarkable track lengths.

Helloween are still as painfully bright eyed and rosy cheeked as as always, but with such a pristine and clinical production, even the punchier tracks like "Pleasure Drone" are stripped of any real bite. The proficiency is still here, Markus Grosskoph turns in a particularly dexterous performance, but the songwriting sense and vitality are long gone. Helloween, when they were relevant, could deliver painfully melodic riffs and solos in such a furious manner that it more than made up for how fruity they were. The fury is gone, folks. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what that leaves you with.

Now this is is quality metal. Everything is clear and concise. Also great melodies and unique twists and turns. The problem with most reviewers such as Dave is that its just "opinion". This is a great album

Yes, this album does take you to the gray area where love and hate collides. As probably realized by many, there are TWO Helloween: the Happy Helloween and the Dark Helloween. This album is a strike between the two, and for me the effort is worthwhile. While probably the extremists won't like this sort of compromise, this album is still great, with memorable songs and witty lyrics. Not quite the quality of Dark Ride, maybe (and so not in the league with Keeper I and II) but I agree it's better than Rabbit. (I like Rabbit better though, a matter of preference.) Just wish Helloween had thought of something else to be the title. This album is NOT a legacy of both Keeper I and II.

The review is harsh. Take a good listen to this album. The production is outstanding. The songwriting is great. The singing is superb. The music itself is remarkable. Most of that you won't even find on the previous keepers. This is truly a great album. It's fun, it's catchy, and there is enough material here to keep the replay value going for years. There is nothing wrong with this album. If anything, Deris could have sung "Light the Universe" by himself. But that can be ignored. Helloween are the Kings.

Occasion Avenue and Born on Judgment Day are two of the best performances Andi Deris has ever done. Period. Helloween is still the greatest ever.

This album is surely the best album since the keeper-albums!! King for a 1000 years and (the progressive) Occasion Avenue are probably the best helloween songs ever written!! The songwriting is still top!! All hail to helloween who has returned top their biggest form...

Wow, this review does not really address the same release I listend to. Helloweens latest effort is pretty cool and in line with many of their releases. Vitality is there and the song wrong is equivallent to many releases they created. I find the release should have been rated 5.5 out of 6.

whatever... Helloween's new album is one of the best power metal releases of the year and their second best Deris album (after Dark Ride). After the ridiculous 'Rabbits...' this one's a fantastic return to form... Even though his voice is a hate or love it affair, Deris can sure write great music... now only if they would get Kiske to sing this like it was originally planned... (Weikath needs to leave the band... he's useless to them, he only wrote 2-3 songs in this one...) anyway, I find this review biased and misleading and definately not written by a power metal connoisseur...

Desperate fans or fans who actually have enjoyed the last 11 years of Helloween? For those wishing for the past with this band, stay there with your mullet and Keepers I and II albums in your hands. Those who have liked or loved the last 5 albums should love this all the same if not more. Personally, I think the band with Deris has been as good as or better than the classic era on many occassions and this is one of them. I'd venture to say that this is the most diverse, energetic, and inspired Helloween album in years. I've only had it for a few weeks now but I'd risk saying that it is my favorite from the band, topping The Time of the Oath. I've never played one of their albums more in such a short period than this. The epic songs are incredible and some of the short speed ladden tracks recall those glory days some hope for. Meanwhile, the mid-paced catchy tunes enlighten the best of what the band has done with Deris over the last decade. Outside of the decent ballad (Ritchie Blackmore's wife has a crap voice) this is expertly crafted material with some amazing performances. The drum work alone tops anything heard on a Helloween record since Ingo sat behind the kit. The song King For A 1000 Years makes the album worth a purchase alone. Next to Revelation it's probably the best Helloween tune ever written and is an excellent follow-up to Halloween and Keeper of The Seven Keys.

Well, I guess the review tried to convey that yes, the production was really clean, the guys can shred, but the songs are lame. I don't really like the scoring system, i'd give it a 4.5/10. That's why i keep my reviews really short, so people can read em, and not just refer to the numbers. thanks for reading, guys.

dude, yes I can add, read the fucking review and tell me if from the review you think this album should have a score of 5/6? Is it hard to be an idiot and point out the obvious?

The common reader is an idiot. Dave basically said this was a shit album not worthy of the Helloween name yet it averages a 5? Come on, I am stupid but can see that the score doesn't reflect the review I can read though, a lot of Metal heads can't, so is cool with me

to get the score in a common rank just multiply by 2 and then substrac 2 . 3.5 = 5. It wasn´t so hard, was it?

First of all i don´t like power metal but i like helloween´s the time of the oath, better than raw, the dark ride.In those 3 cds there is more fury than in the 2 keppers so for me returning to the keppers is a red alarm under my bed.The rabbit album was good for me but i know that helloween can do better in the chorus section, there were interesting songs destroyed by crappy chorus(liar). I saw it like a transition cd. Anyway i will give this a try the pumpkins always surprise me for bad or good. Fonseca´s review sounds like helloween died after the keppers. I lile more halloween than kepper....

Uh so back to Helloween. I don't have this one, but I've heard a few tracks and I have to disagree about the statement that they've been going nowhere in '15 years'. The last three albums have been solid, filled with great powermetal and some newer qualities (especially Dark Ride). Yeah, so everybody is pretty much gone who was involved in the original Keeper albums, but I'm definitely going to give this one a chance. I may be a fanboy, but whatever they're still a great band who know how to make quality powermetal. I guess to some it will be tired material, but I just don't get tired of these fucks.

The overall score for me is always in teh songwriting. The other two scores are just trimming or maybe cranberry sauce, but the meat is in the middle. If an album doesn't break 3 on Songwriting I don't even read the review; unless its a dave fonz review and I think it might be funny in the way that the Edguy review was funny.

@ Lee: I think there was a poll, a while back, that asked whether people would like us to stick to the current rating system or switch to a 10-pt. scale system, and I believe the votes swayed toward the former. I prefer the 10-pt. scale myself, but the readers have - apparently - spoken. What are everyone else's thoughts on this?

You know, this is my whole problem with this 666 rating stuff. From your well written review I would gather this album is shit, and I am sure it is. I hate when bands do this kind of crap. The scores though show like 5.5, 5.5 and a 3.5. which would give it like a base of 4.5 which would be way above average. So what is this 1 through 10? like a 4? I am on a big Pwr metal kick lately but no time for stuff like this. Besides it isn't really even Helloween anymore, everyone is gone. Did you like the Dark Ride?
