Album Review

Score 8.7

It seems like this has been a quiet year so far for the NWOAHM sound, considering that most of the genre’s stalwarts released albums last year. So with that said, it’s nice to see a new album from one of the movement’s pillars, God Forbid. On this album, they’ve gotten a bit more adventurous, creating a concept album broken up into three chapters. The story deals with a post-apocalyptic Earth, and how societies rebuild and make the same mistakes as before.

While the lyrical concept is new ground for God Forbid, the music is just about where everyone expected: a little further down the path set by Gone Forever. The choruses are catchy, there’s a little more singing than before, while the songwriting has become more epic and refined. They do manage to work in a few big breakdowns, but the frantic intensity of Determination has been laid to rest, leaving the guys to battle for supremacy in a style that is well-tread and well-equipped with quality acts.  God Forbid is up to the task.

They are one of those bands where the individual players are so damned good that they could write a country album and I’d be forced to admit that it’s well done for country. Luckily, they play metal, and that’s what we like here at MetalReview. Byron’s harsh vocals are up there with Randy of Lamb of God in terms of power and ferocity. The brothers Coyle shred with the likes of Bachand and Donais (Shadows Fall), but their clean singing blows Killswitch out of the water (and Howard’s damn good as it is). The rhythm section of John and Corey is effective and on-point. This grouping of talent is accentuated by superb production with that certain guitar tone that I only hear on a God Forbid album.

So the ingredients are well-suited for the task, but the overall product is just a small notch below their past works. Of course, I’d give Determination a 6/6/6, and I did give Gone Forever a 6/5.5/5.5, so take that statement for what it’s worth. After an obligatory intro, the first song blasts forth, sounding like a mix of old GF and new Haunted. “The Lonely Dead” shows the obvious effects of touring with Arch Enemy as many of the riffs are downright Amott-esque. The harmonized singing here and throughout the album drills its way into your head. “Under the Flag” gets a little tedious as they bring the mosh for a couple of minutes, then slow it down to the point where it feels like a new song for another couple of minutes. But this is immediately followed by the excellent and anthemic “To the Fallen Hero”. I get a strong Killswitch Engage vibe here, so if that turns you off, be warned.

As an old God Forbid fan, I was secretly hoping they’d return to their old ways, while fully expecting exactly what I got here. It’s not the most original album to reach my ears this year, but it’s a quality release from a quality band. If you never liked the American metal sound that is reaching maturity by this point, you probably won’t be swayed. However, if you are onboard with this wave of U.S. Steel, IV: Constitution of Treason is a guaranteed pleaser.

As much as I enjoy this bands music they sound like the biggest bunch of douchebags in the metal industry and thats pretty difficult to do these days. Hopefully they just play music and never get interviewed or speak publicly ever again. They're press releases may be stupider than Peter Dolving's.

Hey, guys, just wanted to show you a statement from the band about the new album. You gotta appreciate their honesty, even if you don't like the band... "How many of us have seen the news where bands are informing their fans the direction of their new album? If they are metal, it is always the same bullshit. 'This new record is the fastest, heaviest, most aggressive, most brutal thing we've ever done. We can't wait for you to hear it! Your faces will melt off and you'll eat your own brains,'OH MY GOD! It's so heavy!' I'm not afraid of telling people what the real deal is with God Forbid. Our new album is not heavier, it is not more aggressive! In fact, you'll probably hate it more than our other records! The fifth GF record is more diverse and more commercially viable than our other records. We didn't do it on purpose. This just happens to be the songs we wrote this time around. There isn't one song under five minutes. We have two that are over seven minutes long and one that's ten minutes long. There may only be eight songs on the record when we're done. Not enough for you? Fuck off, it's our record!" Let's see Metallica make a statement like that about their new record.

Matt-It sounds like they're slowly putting another album together. It's sad to say, but I think these guys are tapped out. Constitution was a piece of shit in my opinion, whereas Gone Forever was pretty solid. I would probably like them more if they lost the clean, harsh, clean, harsh formula. It's way overdone.

It's a good thing Zack learned to play every song on his guitar so he can go out and make another cookie cutter shit band like this one. What a fucking waste of time. Not impressive=Zack and God Forbid.

Haha I really got the point of this one. The funny thing is that i heard that this band is metalcore but different from other metalcore bands. Well i can safely tell you this is the most common shit ever. It's like a musical "deja vu". Same opinion about the intro too.

Gone Forever was indeed better than IV: Constitution Of Treason. But in terms of production and overall musicianship; IV:... takes the cake.

Agreed with Jeremy and Danny...this CD gets tedious, boring, and repetitive. I do like Under This Flag, but out of the couple of months I've had this CD no real parts from any other songs stick out in my mind. It lacks....something from Gone Forever. I remember I had the main riff from "Better Days" and "antihero" stuck in my head for weeks. Maybe overall the songs are slower, maybe the guitarwork is less interesting, I don't know, I can't really put my finger on it. But something has been lost from Gone Forever to IV: Constitution of Treason. One word: disappointing.

After the 1st two songs my interest steadily declines when I listen. I suppose since the first songs remind me of Gone Forever. The concept isn't all that hot. The CD overall is definitely on the boring side.

This is possibly (myabe with the excpetion of Ghost Reveries) the most overated CD of 2005. God Forbid have sacrificed the music to tell a story which quite frankly is mediocre at best. The concept is cliched and the band has failed to spark any kind of interest in their post apocalyptic world. Gone Forever was a fucking brutal album, this one lacks passion. Maybe its a grower and I need to commit more time to it, but in the few months I've had this I think I've listened to it twice, and never from start to finish because it begins to bore me. A Grower only works if it brings the listener back for more, this album doesn't offer anything like as much as the best of 2005's releases, Nile & Buried Inside do concept albums alot better, God Forbid should go back to what they know. A big dissapointment.

great CD, dual-disc format sucks. My computer media player reads the songs as a shitload of 20-30 second clips, rather than the actual songs. It still plays though, just kinda weird. Definitely won't buy any others on dual-disc. God Forbid kicks ass!

I still think this album is good but never as good as the 2 before... Gone Forever is simply amazing. Constitution of Treason have its good moment but I miss the violence they had. Some songs are pretty awesome but some other are not... Production is flawless but i'd say songwriting is a bit high.

I think the production needs a 5 for some ticks and pops or distortion from mastering at too high a level. Certainly not as bad as Rush/Vapor Trails (hard to get any worse) but they are deffinately there when you listen with headphones. 555 for me

"I guess I wasn't clear about who does the cleans. I know Byron doesn't do them, Dallas (and Doc?) do." Dallas is the main clean singer, but Doc does some backups, and Byron has a few clean moments of his own. Like "This is an ode, to the fallen hero" (1:32). That's Byron.

I agree the dual-disc format is stoopid and pointless, I didn't have problems playing/ripping it but if people are, then it's doubly stoopid. I didn't notice the small print but its there in black and white (well, white anyway). I don't see the point in risking disappointing fans instead of, ooh, releasing it as 2 discs. And it's not even as if the DVD content is worth the funky technology, just a crappy documentary. A full concert or something would have been nice, done very recently by the mighty Hypocrisy, and that was as 2 seperate discs... My original lash still stands though, the album is cool (if you can play it)

Good album but unfortunately Century Media has chosen to release this in the stupid new DualDisc format. This means it will not play on all machines. If you read the tiny print on the back cover it advizes that the audio portion of the disc does not conform to normal CD standards. I own 5 devices normally capable of playing CD's including my house stereo, a portable, a ghetto blaster, a car stereo, a DVD player and a computer. Well it only plays on two of them, and I'm sure some people won't be able to play it at all. Curiously enough I can burn a copy of the audio tracks. There is no choice but to buy the disc in this format. The store from which I purchased it advized that a Japanese version will be released later this year as CD only, but this would be an extremely expensive import. I will not be buying another CD in this format and neither will any of my mates who were present when I tried to play it, so Century Media are cutting their own throats here.

It's definitely a grower of an album. My first listen didn't impress me much, but each successive listen gets more intriguing. I guess I wasn't clear about who does the cleans. I know Byron doesn't do them, Dallas (and Doc?) do. Thanks for reading. And for the record, I'd say I gave it a 5. The production and musicianship ratings are just aesthetics, songwriting is what counts.

You'll never hear me complain about a war, I have a lot of friends who are active in the armed forces, and they are proud of what they do, and so am I. Even though I disagree with the political leaning of most of my favorite bands(Darkest Hour, God Forbid, Unearth, etc), they all make kick ass music so who cares? leftist pussies.

Alright, i thought the review itself was pretty thorough and all, i just don't see how this band could recieve that high of a rating. Don't get me wrong, they're a talented band at what they do, but with this album alot of the songs kinda sound similar to each other and to me they really haven't progressed with their sound all that much. They're simply boring to me, and without knowing their name i would probably just pass them off as another Haunted/Shadows Fall type of band. Just my opinion though...

I like the progression they made here from Gone Forever. Songwriting has improved, and for me this is the most important and obvious change. Unlike the usual MR posters who dismiss an increase in clean vox as "gay" I personally think it sounds great here. Don't know if the reviewer picked it up but guitarist Dallas Coyle does pretty much all of the clean vox, Byron joins in occasionally as far as I can tell (might be wrong, but it is Dallas mainly! Dallas is actually credited as a co-vocalist rather than a backing vocalist here). Nice attempt at a concept, by the way, helps keep things more interesting than the usual ambiguous crap American metal seems to cough up... even though Zao pretty much did the same thing a year ago....

As usual someone spouts of with a comment without stating what they felt was wrong it? If you have a problrm with a reviewers score te least you could do is state you rational for giving it a 3. Personally I would give it a 5. As a whole I feel the review is spot-on but I personally don't care for the change in Byron's voice.
