Album Review

Score 7.5

Man, talk about a landslide. In the previous Mp3 War, Beneath the Massacre laid waste to both Ritual Carnage and Slowmotion Apocalypse with minuscule resistance. Furthermore, after spinning Evidence of Inequity numerous times, I can see why. However – despite the album’s innate quality – I must register a bunch of complaints that I feel are warranted and substantial.

With Evidence of Inequity, we’re offered a twenty-minute slab of insanely fast death metal that radiates with oodles of talent. Everything about this record is blistering: the soloing, drumming, grooving, and growling. Undoubtedly, most all of you are familiar with the opener in “Comforting Prejudice,” and Beneath the Massacre don’t differ too radically from the path that’s forged by the aforementioned. Talent-laden instrumentation leads the assault while massive grooves accompany; the full-on intensity of the band, not to mention complexity, remind me of the American masters Nile with a sound that essentially replicates Despised Icon’s shtick (thanks Mark!). “Profitable Killcount” is different in so much that it relies on riffage more than anything else to carry itself. And – more often than not – Beneath the Massacre prefer to lash us with short bursts, as no song crosses the four-minute barrier.

Now, though the musicianship of the group is about as noteworthy as physically possible, the production wasn’t able to get on my good side. The guitars are always noodling around, which is fine in and of itself, but the fact that the leads are needlessly high-pitched downplays the overall façade, plus the drums themselves could use some beefing up in order to conjure the sound that Evidence of Inequity so desperately craves. Or, at least I think so.

Essentially, what we have here, is yet another formidable offering from our neighbors to the north. Yes, Quebec has succeeded once again. But, there’s still much to be addressed if Beneath the Massacre wish to rise to the top of the heap, and we’re definitely going to need a full-length in order to weigh these guys’ stuff adequately.

This record is heavy as hell. The Despised Icon influence is definitely there, but i dont see that as a bad thing. The breakdowns are good, not all of them quite fit, so i can see both sides of the equation. those that dig breakdowns will love them, those that dont can get past them because the creative fucked up instrumentalists and appocalyptic vocals really carry themselves quite well. 8.5/10. Did they put something in Quebec's water supply to really piss them off?

This disc contains indeed some sick musicianship and incredible fast death metal. The only thing which is less amusing is, what's been already mentioned, their breakdowns. They're not a band who must integrate breakdowns in their music. If they'll do that, and get some more experience on interesting songwriting, their next album could be heading towards a perfect score.

No, it's a real drummer. He has triggers. Cuz that way he can play longer, and just as fast and not fuck up by the third song like all the obdurate drummers of the world do. Often.

I think these guys are Amazing, especially their guitar players, where did they come from, they are two of the most syncronized players I have ever heard. I would of given this band an all around perfect score, everyrthing on this album is awesome and insanely brutal, if its complete technical brutality yu are looking for, then check these guys out. After hearing these guys, I have been forever blessed! -Sean-

they need to stop doing the breakdowns, more death less hardcore, then theyd be perfect. and the hardcore crowd is way more annoying then anything on earth, if they wante to attack fake villains they should have joined the power rangers cast.

Great Shit! Was impressed from the first seconds on. So I gave it instantly 3 spins and still begging for more! It's exactly the DM sound I dig. Production note should be better. Man I thought there is something with Cryptops, Origin, Despiced Icon and the like!! Sure, Montreal. Thank you! Only minor criticism: The breakdowns are sometimes a little boring or too long. Although I love the guttural and fast vocals, they could be more variable. And yeah, someone said it: The breakdown on Nevermore is really boring and kills the song. Overall, more than great stuff. Killer!

lets talk about how they throw in horrible breakdowns that sound like they were stolen from shit bands like Unearth. come on. that breakdown in Nevermore goes on for damn near a minute and completely kills the song and the EP for me. these guys have the talent. they just need to figure out which crowd they want to please...the death metal crowd...or the pansy faggot hardcore Bruce Lee crowd

These guys are fuckin insane, and if anyone plays an instrument they would know that these guys deserve way more credit for this EP!! I would have gave them a way better score. They are so technical it makes you shit yourself! Just listen to the arpeggios and the bass guitar-drum lines in the beginning of Regurgitated Lullaby for the Born Dead. They put scene queens to shame!!!!!

I would have given a better production score. Also I would have given songwriting a five. These guys are amazing and deserve some credit for creating something unique.

The production is a slight more than a 3.5. My only real complaint is that the snare could have been a bit more crisp.

The Despised Icon comparison also comes as no surprise as BTM's guitarist played for Despised on their last tour of the US. These guys are certainly intense, but I think the singer should drop the echo effect from the vocals in the live setting.

I just got this cd from willowtip in the mail today, and have only listened to it once, but i think the sound is good! The pummeling drums sound fit their style and make an impression and i believe the guitars sound good. they are bad ass, but i can't judge completely until a few listens, at least.

Hey, Jason. Just thought it was so easy to compare the two (besides the obvious Canadian connection). Listen to the beginnings of "Retina" (by Despised Icon) and "Comforting Prejudice." Both are fast-paced, blistering, brutal bursts of technical insanity.

Though I think the production score should be higher (I prefer the high pitched, almost squeally guitar sound)... I agree with your last sentence... These guys definitely need to put out a full-length.
