I’ve heard it said that this American five-piece is doing “nothing groundbreaking, nothing exciting.” What’s more groundbreaking and exciting in a bloated melodic death scene than a release that stands decapitated head and mangled shoulders above its peers? The last thing Darkest Hour needs is another critic asking readers to understand that the group isn’t hardcore or metalcore or needlessly addressing the fact that they’re signed to Victory Records, so I’ll describe their sound with the following descriptors:  urgent, melodic, refined, passionate, honest, and chock-full of solos. They won’t bore you with elongated seven minute songs with two riffs and punk tendencies either. In fact, the group’s latest release, Undoing Ruin, is eleven songs deep and all of 37 minutes and 48 seconds. What makes Darkest Hour the definitive melodic death metal band is the fact that the group gives each song a unique characteristic or driving hook. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to an album three times over only to find myself completely lost when coming back to it a week later. Songs will melt into each other to the point where I’ll sit there for a few minutes with one finger just above the play button while I try to figure out which song is which. Not so with Undoing Ruin. “Tranquil” is the pummeling track with the most transitions and the most delicately drawn out solos. Catchy and born from a more traditional songwriting structure, “Convalescence” is where the group finds itself coming as close to a ballad as it probably will in its career without sacrificing any of its integrity. “This Will Outlive Us” proves to be the album’s most solid ode to the Swedish sound Darkest Hour has been accused of cultivating in the past. “Pathos” is the mid-album, all-acoustic session that serves as a welcome break from all of the unrelenting speed. What more could a listener ask for? This is really as diverse as a melodic death recording is going to get without veering in cheesy experimental territory. Devin Townsend’s production here is on par with his back catalogue. His celebrated wall of sound style is as prevalent here as on his latest Strapping Young Lad release. Everything from the twin-guitar attack of Mike Schleibaum and Kris Norris to the frenetic but always fitting drumming of Ryan Parrish is pushed to the forefront without any other elements of the group's sound being cut from the mix. Even without the excellent production, this album would vie for a position in my top ten of the year. The vocals are passionately aggressive, the riffs are memorable, and all of the choruses are superbly crafted. Don’t shy away from this release because you’ve got your dirtied panties in a bunch over metalcore or because you despise the group’s label. At the very least, do yourself a favor; check out a few song samples and challenge your expectations.

Their new album just leaked and holy shit, its easily gonna be one of the best of 2007. It's every bit as good as undoing ruin if not 10x better. It comes out July 10th so make sure to go out and buy it and support this amazing fucking band!

This really sounds to me like the kind of record that At the Gates would be putting out if they were still around. That being said, I like Darkest Hour's sense of melody a bit more. This is, by the way, miles better than their previous albums. I can't wait to see how they follow this one up.

How the fuck, this album did not caught my attention two years ago it's a mystery. How the hell this band belongs to victory records is a bigger mystery. Someone to call Serlock Holmes.

I don't see how people can say there's no metalcore in this band. Songs like "Sound the Surrender," are heavy on the metalcore. For most bands, this is a band thing, but I think Darkest Hour pull it off pretty well. There's definitely enough melodeath and thrash in this release to keep me happy.

Yeah, I'm still listenin' to this. Definitely one of 2005's top releases, way better than "sadist nation" in my opinion. All you buttholes that say they're not doing anything exciting are full o' shit. These guys succeeded in creating a very well done melodic death album, while plenty of other bands attempt the same style and similar sound, and only come up with merely satisfactory, mediocre results. Darkest Hour should be commended for this effort, even while being signed to Victory which will be a bitching point for some. My only complaint about this album was all the hype and comparisons. This is definitely a big album, but it still ain't no Slaughter of the Soul. All intelligence and restraint aside, DARKEST HOUR FUCKING ROCKS!, AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT GO SHOVE YOUR DIMMU CD UP YOUR ASS, AND JERK YOUR CHODE TO YOUR ARCH ENEMY POSTER, PUNK! Thanks. Nice review.

I got this record a while ago(fuck victory records), and they have some serious dark tranquillity and megadeth shit going on in the solos, its good... but sometimes they hold back and dont really take the songs as far as they want to go, sometimes it just abruptly cuts off. still though triviums got nothing on this. there is still room to grow when the next album comes, though watch the fuck out.

They are hyping this record too much, and it will hurt the sales with some people, but at least they`re promoting their bands. How many labels just drop a new cd and then leave bands hanging with no support at all? This is a good disc, and is well worth the price. Don`t let some corporate marketing machine ruin it for you.

I understand your point, but if I had to choose between me and the commerce, the answer would be clear.
Unknown Metalhead
Speci | posted on 7/2005 | Reply
Yeah, but if if I let commerce influence my decision, and it doesn't work out for them, then, in a very small way, I can influence commerce. If I bought their album, (even if it was purely because I like the music, which is the only reason you should buy an album) I would essentially be encouraging that kind of marketing, which I really don't want.
Unknown Metalhead

It is, it most defenitly is. But you gotta see behind all that promotional bullshit, and just take what it is, a nice enjoyable album. The point is; you let the commerce influence your choise (good or bad for them) and thats exactly what you problably don't want.

I caught these guys at BB king's during a trip to the US recent;y (I'm actually from Australia). It isn't a great compliment in some aspects to say they were easily the best band on a bill that also included Bleeding Through and Misery Signals, but they were an entertaining live band. This is nothing groundbreaking, and nothing exciting. I've listened to metal for about 10 years, and have enjoyed the changes, such as when I heard Slaughter of the Soul in the mid 90s. my 14 year old mind was warped, this is nothing like Slaughter of the soul, when I first heard ride the lightning when I was 12, and which got me into metal, I was warped, this is not the same. If you want to hear something that changes your perspective on metal, listen to Byzantine. This isn't a bad album, but to call this legendary...is an atrocity.

I liked their last album, and this one is even better. the production is better and the guitarists show how good they are. I really like that they have stepped up with the solos. This is an all around quality metal album, definitely one of this year's top ten. I say they're melodic death metal, with more of a metalcore or hardcore vocal style, but whatever you want to classify these guys as, they fuckin rock. Nice Review Mr. Chellis, you're dead on. Oh and uh, nobody pay any attention to gore, he's like the kid in the shopping cart behind you in line at the grocery store that won't quit crying, he just wants to bitch for the sake of having something to bitch about. Gore, relax, why all the negativity? Darkest Hour is a really cool band, what is your beef with them? and if they're not good enough for you, then who is?

Unlikely. Not a metalcore band by any means, and the clean vocals, as pointed out, are not emo style in any way and theyre only presented in a small part in one song anyways. But yes, this album is amazing, and I honestly do think it now ranls them amongst the swedish greats In Flames and At the Gates. 666 in my opinion.

Where are the breakdowns? Same thing with BDM, just because they don't have hair to their ass doesn't mean they're metalcore. These guys shred harder than most melodic death bands wish they could. This is an excellent album and definitly better than their last two in songwriting, musicianship and definitly production. And don't bitch about the clean vocals, they make like one appearence and it's no different than any other metal singing. In fact it's almost more of a shout.

Do give these guys a chance. There isn't any cheesy emo clean vocal choruses or redundant hardcore breakdowns. This album is studied melodeath done perfectly. Only old In Flames really compares. Don't hate me for saying it either, but this album really is a good head and shoulders above even Slaughter of The Soul... And you motherfuckers know it.

I was a huge Darkest Hour fan up through Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, but this album has really changed my opinion of the band. The clean vocals and whatnot were never present on their previous records. The energy doesn't seem to be there. While the production is great, it'll probably fade into obscurity in my mind while classics like Mark of the Judas will remain.
