This is it. Eric Rutan is deserving of accolades. In my eyes this band has been struggling to find an identity, a production, and frankly its footing for quite some time now. Nine years of Morbid Angel under anyone's belt is going to create some kind of stylistic influence which takes time to purge and redigest. The original mission statement put forth at the parting of ways, if memory serves, was to stretch the boundaries of death metal in a way he was unable to in the folds of his former band. While the past two albums of MA-Lite were good fun, they neither stretched nor punctured the fabric of musical space-time. It is safe to say that what came before was technically proficient and nothing to scoff at but largely forgettable.

Now somewhat of a death metal institution themselves; the name and what it represents has come a long way since Tim Yeung and Alex Webster joined Mr. Rutan to hash out demo material back in 97. Torrential currents of perversion solidified ex materia, songs found on I, Monarch display flair not present in the band’s previous work. “It Is Our Will” and “To Know Our Enemies” exhibit the kind of growth I have been waiting for in Hate Eternal songwriting. The sound is developed and dares let fly the notion that the technical and brutal schools are allowed to slow things down and explore complex rhythms and tempo outside the furious pace of full throttle blasting. To my delight, the boys from Tampa push the envelope so far on occasion, visions of Close to a World Below skip through my mind. Don’t mistake this album for a second as representative of the kind of entropy Immolation are responsible for but the taint of chaos is there.

Tibetan percussion and didgeridoo may offend the sensibilities of a few fans out there but they are used sparingly within their respective tracks and the atmosphere they create smothers the rumblings of gimmicky retardation just as they arise within the listener's mind. I recall hearing that Rutan was at the helm and is responsible for the production on his previous albums. Either he has been practicing or he outsourced this time around because the mix is splendid. Oppressive and opaque in all the right frequencies; heavy breathing is not encouraged during spans of extended listening due to danger of asphyxiation. All players save the bass and are held together in a concentrated area to maximize potency. While the lack of definition does irk me, at this point it is fairly obvious no band aside from Pavor is going to do the four-stringed lord justice, so I digress.

Altimeter streaming in the dangerous direction and stall warning blazing in their ears, the core of Hate Eternal has given a mighty tug on the yoke to set this flight back on course. In a modern realm of death metal where simply punishing instruments is no longer enough; innovation is king. Time will tell if I, Monarch is remembered as the high watermark but given the amount of progress and quality present here; I smell a magnum opus around the corner. This is more than just another solid death metal album. I am intrigued.

Just amazing. I don't know quite why I like this so much. The blasting almost becomes hypnotic. I can totally understand why many DM fans think this is just too much. But I love it. It has a got an Immolation vibe at times but it retains a much different identity. Well except for the obvious It Is Our Wil, (I mean seriously is that a tribute or what). lt is exhausting to listen to. But it has a thing. Go for it Rutan.

Heard the new song from Fury and Flames. Extremely brutal, but seems to have a little more variety in the songwriting. I'm hoping it's a little more diverse than I, Monarch. Let's put a little more groove in there guys, along with more memorable riffs. I'm a big Alex Webster fan, so I hope his bass is loud and clear! Looking forward to it.

Normally i hate albums that are 95% blasting. Normally, i hate death metal all together. But, i have to make an exception with this one. I don't know what it is, but i just don't get tired of this album no matter how many times i listen to it. I would definately attribute this to the unique style that Rutan and Co. bring to the table. Maybe similar bands have fallen through the cracks with me, but, i've never heard anything like this. And, the production kicks ass.

this is a nice album, but it does sound a bit like they put a dimmer on their skills, they can do so much more..

This album does kick ass, but I agree with everyone saying there isn't much variety. I love blasting death metal, but it is kind of nice to have some groove every now and then. That's why I've enjoyed Cannibal Corpse's last few albums so much. A lot of blasting, but enormous groove, too.

I think this album kicks ass. I wish Roddy would relax on the high speed blasting once and a while, but it does offer quite the tempo to each piece of music. The intro to the title track is magnificent. I hope the next HE album is a little better produced, much in the way he produced Cannibal Corpse's KILL.

This band is capable of so much, but gives you so little. Actually they give you a whole lot. It is just the same thing over and over again... Too bad.

I think the idea here is to focus on groove while maintaining a high level of musicianship and power. Unfortunately, this only makes them innovative if your stuck in the mid ninties. There are many better bands out there.

Oh yeah, another album I should love, but Rutan and Co. are so off road, how can I don't like them. This is quite unaccessible, and for the slow listener (even metalhead can enter into this category) Hate Eternal seems to be highly repetitive. Well, I think Hate Eternal is more a challenging listening. Where do I compare Hate Eternal from their other albums. Many there are more desire to communicate something to anyone at all. Because Hate Eternal is an introspective evil affair. So don't be surprise if you don't like them, they don't like you.

hate eternal is an awesome band, and this is their best album. I don't think this album is repetitive at all and I happen to find Nile EXTREAMLY repetitive, not that theyre a bad band, but better songwriting would be nice. The point is, if you like Nile, or Malevolent Creation, or Deeds of Flesh you'll probably like this, if you like In Flames or At The Gates stay far away.

I've heard two songs and am staying well clear. The title track pummels one single god-awful riff for almost its entire playing length....what the hell is up with that? It's different but it IS boring and it most definitely IS overly repetitive. Hate Eternal simply fucking blow. There's a ridiculous number of FAR better DM bands who don't have a fraction of the size of this band's retarded fanbase.

but that won't change the fact that these guys are not all that great at writing memorable songs.

I'm hard pressed to remember one riff from this record. I'd give it a six for technicality, a two for actual songwriting.

Given that we work from a base 75 scale here, anything below a 4 is wretched. 4 across the board then would be average. This album is above average and scored as such. Cite examples of this repetition you find so odeous, compared to a band like Nile, this band is anything but repetitive.

i'm very disappointed. this album is sooo repetitive, sooo boring. i wonder what they had been doing for last three years. how many times do i have to listen to the same old patents? and sorry patrick, but your review is highly incompetent. i know that you could have done it better... production:4,5 songwriting:3 musicianship:5

This is by far the best HATE ETERNAL album, however I still feel they they can accomplish much more. My favorite track is the closing instrumental "Faceless One". Great stuff!...if you want to hear some great bass playing in death metal, then listen to Novy from VADER, BEHEMOTH, and DIES IRAE or Martin Kukol of the Slovakian band PERVERSITY.

Hate Eternal has been one of those bands that you wish would just burst free from their restraints and create the wonderful album you know they are capable of. It sounds as if I Monarch may possibly be such an album? These guys are so talented, but for some reason, that talent just did not translate into amazing albums in the previous two attempts. Signed: A metalhead very much looking forward to Hate Eternal's newest opus.
